Tullians take note: The flautist-on-one-leg and his merry band of minstrels will be performing at the Tollwood festival on Sunday, 13th July 2008, as part of their 40th Anniversary tour. 40 years is a long time, but they were still sounding pretty good when I saw them at the Circus Krone last year. Got my ticket already. smile.gif

Event details on MuenchenTicket - ticket price 41.25 Euros.

I think I will definitely try to go to this.

Excellent! smile.gif

Scogs and I are sho-ins, we saw him three years ago, an intellectual treat.
*And a great birthday present - hint, hint, Scogs!*
Scogs
Ok I got the hint smile.gif
Pas
Oh why 40 euro's.

This is my musical heritage as my Dad got me into them and he watched them when he was young. Jesus , even my mother has seen them and she hates music.

Saw them back in the 80's and I'm going to have to think about this one.
ian
Ah! Spin me back down the years and the days of my youth.

I'll be there. After I've made all my animal deals.
sarabyrd
Oh, fuck! Scogs never got these tickets. Looks like I'll have to treat myself and be someone's +1. Shall we meet up for a cool beer beforehand?
GreenTea
Meetup would be nice. Anyone else going to this?
Jeeves
I'm away that week, otherwise...
I saw them in Graz on a hot August night a couple of years ago. The years just melted away, in my mind if not in my body.
Which reminds me, I said I'd go to Neil Diamond last month but that didn't happen either.
sarabyrd
I didn't have the heart to go and purposely did not read the reviews. It must have been grand.

It must have been grand.

Eee, by gum, Sara lass, tha sounds reet Lankyshire theear.

Now, if we could gerr'em ter play "Up the 'Pool" - that'd really be grand.
sarabyrd
At least I avoided "graidly", if that's the word I recall from "The Secret Garden".
GreenTea
Think I've seen it spelled "gradely" - anyroad, "gradely", "grand", whatever - fine northern words. smile.gif
DickyD
I've got 2 lasses coming with me too ... see you all there
sarabyrd
This lassie won't make it, too many other things to do. Bootleg "Too old to rock'n'roll" for me, won't you?
GreenTea
Aw Sara, that's a pity. Can't you squeeze it in somehow? After all, they won't be doing another 40th anniversary tour, and a 50th anniversary gig in 10 years' time may be too much to hope for. Then again, who knows...?

I'm getting myself in the mood now by trying to listen my way through 40 years of Tull recording history in one week. It's kinda awesome. Especially the early stuff.

Anyone got any plans to meet up? How will we recognise each other? Oh, I have an idea. We'll get Ian to stand at the entrance and play air guitar like crazy. He's brilliant at that - never plays a wrong note. biggrin.gif
GreenTea
Bumpity-bump. Meetup anyone?

I now have an even better idea than Ian playing air guitar. After all, with a name like Ian, there really is only one possibility: we get him to stand on one leg and play air flute!
biggrin.gif
ian
Actually, ahem... GreenTea. Old sport. Most flutes are, infact, as it were. actually already air flutes. You know? Its kind of important you see. an air flute. With all the blowing and stuff.
Heres a quick rendition to kind of give you an idea and get you in to it. A bit. See if you can here the flute.

Meet up? Were gonna meet on the ledge. Were gonna meet on the ledge. Oh sorry that's Fairport! Easy mistake to make.
GreenTea
Impressive video. Watching that, and knowing that Ian Anderson considers his flute as a kind of phallic symbol ... oh dear, there are so many things that could be said.

Anyway, from the posts on this thread, it looks like we have at least 5 definites and 2 maybes turning up. Hey, we could get a whole air band together. Ian, you gotta do air flute, cos your name's Ian. And my name is not Anderson - in fact, I'm rather relieved about that, for some reason that has nothing to do with flutes. I volunteer for air keyboards. Air guitarists are ten-a-penny, so should be no problem there. Anyone for air drums? If we're good enough, people might even throw money at us!
GreenTea
*Sigh* ... No-one wants to meet up then? Not even Ian? Ah well, looks like I've scared everyone off as usual. At this rate, even Jethro Tull himself might fail to turn up, and they'll have to cancel the show. Pity, I was so looking forward to seeing him.
ian
Yeah! Lets meet up!
Location: Tollwood
Time: Before the concert
GreenTea
Yeah, great idea! Maybe we should narrow things down a bit though. I'll cast the first stone. The concert starts at 19:00, so how about meeting at 18:30 just outside the entrance to the concert tent?
fraufruit
I will just open the window and hope the wind is right for a good listen thereby avoiding the mud, the blood and the beer.

Pretty crappy day to go to Tollwood or anywhere else for that matter.
ian
It'll be like Glastonbury all over again!
ian
Someone suggested meeting in the Andechs tent at 18:00
Last year it rained too:

Its uncanny as if they knew it would be this wet when they wrote the lyrics:
Album "War child" Two fingers "Will welcome you to the final nod, and cover you with mud" 1974
Album "A" 4 W.D (Low ratio) "through the deep mud. Plugged happy as a boy in sand" 1980

OK then, if I'm there early enough, I'll look for you in the Andechs tent, otherwise I'll head for the concert tent by around 18:45 in full mudbath combat gear.
fraufruit
The music sounded great through open windows. Seldom does the sound carry so well.

How was it up close and personal???
GreenTea
It was an extraordinary evening. Wading through endless mud and water ... a visit to Coolerking ... drinking beer in the Andechs tent with a couple of crazy English guys, sitting around a massive tree trunk segment fashioned into a table that could only be described as "urig" (love that word) ... and finally, the Russian guy who appeared just as we were leaving and began to tell us about himself, his fond memories of England, how he came to Germany many many years ago, his life as a journalist with Radio Free Europe, bringing hope and enlightenment to the peoples of eastern Europe. He told of the great Russian motherland, of the continuing struggle for freedom and democracy, of how the human spirit needs to be unfettered, to soar above adversity... By this time, the two crazy English guys had long since vanished into the night. But our Russian friend continued, and I just let him talk ... and talk ... and talk. I love listening to Russians after they've had a few drinks. They pour out their heart and soul as only the Russians can do. By the time I finally headed off home I was totally on a different spiritual plane. Or whatever.

Let's see, what else was there? Oh yeah, some rock band were playing a 40th anniversary gig. Pretty good they were, too.
fraufruit
Interesting. The only people who I know who worked for "Radio Free Europe" were employed by the CIA.

Glad you had a nice evening.
