From BBC News: Germans to see sitcom 'Allo 'Allo.

QUOTE
The series, about France under the Nazi occupation, is to be screened on German TV for the first time. All eight series of the BBC comedy, which ran from 1982 to 1992, have been sold to broadcaster ProSiebenSat1. A BBC spokesman said the show "had not been picked up in Germany until now due to the subject matter".

I used to love this show when I was growing up. I didn't realise it had never been shown in Germany though.

Further info about the series, see also the Wikipedia article: 'Allo 'Allo!.

I already found it a bit odd when I was watching Hogans Heroes on TV here a few months ago.

Formidable! cool.gif

I'm hoping Herr Flick becomes a cultural character of reference like Hausmeister Krause.
DDBug
Oh my kids LOVE that show. Just a shame they will probably dub it. sad.gif

I had heard it was a very popular show in France so if the french can find it funny...

Lets face it, the show works as they use a lot of steriotypes and no one escapes being mocked.

The big question is, how the hell will they translate the policemens lines...

Good moaning...

And how do you tranlsate the whole 'its in the gateaux in the chateau, the one with the candle with the andle...' into german and still make it funny...

Should be interesting.
SpiderPig
And the "Pist office" comment...?

He and Von Smallhausen were one of the greatest comedic duos of all time. It's unfortunate that the show will most probably be dubbed...
SpiderPig
YouTube link...

cb6dba
I read that it will indeed be dubbed.

However most of my german friedns tend to try get hold of the original versions of english language comedy.

They say that at times the translation is not quite as funny...
RoomWithAMoose
Times are past when such things were translated adequately... still, better badly subted than completely translated or...nothing at all.
Starshollow
Tks for the YouTube----- I am currently laughing my ass of already. But how are the indeed going to translate the "sellery/salary joke" for instance...
This could become a new favourite of mine by the looks of it, but nothing will ever beat Father Ted for me anyway - and they have never shown that in Germany yet either.

Cheerio
Small Town Boy
I was also a big fan of 'Allo 'Allo. Showing it in Germany will cause some additional interest because, as I pointed out a couple of years ago, the character Lieutenant Gruber is a dead-ringer of the football commentator Günter Netzer.

cb6dba
I had fogotten about Gruber..

It will be interesting to see how germany reacts to soldiers and SS agents that are gay, incompitent and into S&M.

Have there been any shows so far in which the german salute and the words heil hitler have been used?

What was it the little guy used say 'klomp'???
Lorelei
Isn't half the humour in the accents? How on earth is the English guy masquerading as a French policeman going to sound in German?! blink.gif

It was only shown on Canal+, a private encrypted channel. So I would not call it very popular. It seems quite unknown for Frenchs.

I heard a lot about since I live here. I will try to get it in DVD.
gideon
Canal+ though has very good market penetration, amongst the other forms of penetration it is reknowned for, so it is quiet possible that the show was popular even though it rubs up on the French resistance mythology.

I can't wait to see how this is translated. I know plenty of people in the industry who would realy enjoy the challenge of getting this to work, but sometimes things are just impossible to do. I remember a friend doing the "Sweeny" translation asking me what the equivalent word for "lock-up" was.

I always thought he was saying "tler" (ie just the last syllable of the salute.)

yoooou stuuuupid woman!

Can you not see that I am 'elping this young lady remove a rat from her blouse!
HydroSkater
Problem is, a lot of the jokes probably won't translate well, especially since a lot of it is a play on words :-}
They'll probably translate it to something completely different and unfunny... I will be interested to see if they Germans will find it funny though.
foreverescape
That's fantastic! I love that show ha ha
cb6dba
It has to be easier than the whole german episode from Faulty Towers...

Or anything from blackadder with flashman in it..

"Schicken Sie mir die Frau mit den Rad sofort ober Ich werde nach GB fleigen und gebe ich ihre Frau was die Handtuch aufzuhangen": Note 1 below.

Note 1: My german is crap

However, I think most blackadder fans will know which episode I am refering to :-)

Politically correct Germany will go berserk over the show... Remember the controversy about Harald Schmidt's Nazometer? Showing 'Allo 'Allo in Germany will keep our utterly useless talk show hosts in stable employment for many weeks but my guess is they will stop airing it after much public outcry...

I liked what I saw in the short clip but then again I also liked Allershausen's "Knock knock, who is there" Gestapo joke...
Allershausen
I can't see which clip it was at work, but the thing about 'allo 'allo is that it pokes fun at every stereotype from all the nations involved in the WW2 in Europe, except the yankees, at least I don't remember an episode with any Americans. The British, the French, the Italians as well as the Germans are laughed at. It's in no way an anti - German programme. It's just funny! smile.gif
But without the accents it will lose much of the humour, the British pilots have to have an upper class useless idiot accent or it just won't work.
kathie
They regularly show Blackadder and Fawlty Towers on the digital channel Sat1 Comedy, and the dubbing is painfully bad. I dread to think what Allo Allo would be like...
Bilby
Pssst... listen veri cairefully, I shall type zis only once. We too lov zis show very much and are viry glad to see it 'ere at last and we 'ope zat ze cafe orner who is ze bravist man in all of france is not translated too badly and zat ze good spirit of 'ze show is not lost in 'ze political correctness, no? 'opefully also you can rid what i wryt in zis viry bid french accint. i zink zat it is, alas, as cb6dba says, almost impissible to tranlate za 'gateaux in the chateau' and 'the candle with the andle'... it's a buggerrr.
cb6dba
That settles it, tonight is Allo Allo night laugh.gif
tigress
Ive a number of Allo Allo dvds and have show the show to Germans and French friends, all of whom speak great English and understand and love the english humour & playing with words...still, they didnt find it funny...

Dubbing into German is just going to change the show completely...shame...
Sin
Shit! Am I the only soul on the entire planet who absolutely hated 'Allo! 'Allo!? unsure.gif Even my mum thinks it's bloody funny. I think it's about as funny as lighting your farts or saying, "Poo".
cb6dba
Huh...Huh Huh..Huh...

He said Poo...

Oh shit! Next you'll be telling me you all liked Keeping Up Appearances as well. What are you? Thatcher's children or something? unsure.gif
Allershausen
I fail to see the connection. Do you mean was I alive when 'allo 'allo and mad one were new then yes. Keeping up appearances, no, no comparison.

What was it the little guy used say 'klomp'???

Little guy = Hans (the one who ended up in England working for British intelligence because he escaped from the POW camp and accidently got taken to England instead of the airmen... remember?!!)

'klomp' = 'TLER' (ref: http://www.marktv.org/aa/faq.html#q1 ... it doesn't always display well but has lots of nice info)

Anyway, back to the thread...

Geering: The Colonel gave you a pill. Where is it?
Rene:I have the pill in the till.
Geering: Where is the vine for the General?
Rene: It is here in this jug.
Geering: The pill contains a drug.
Rene: The pill in the till?
Geering: Take it and put it in there.
Rene: Put the drug in the jug?
Gruber: (Comes in with the Gateau) We nearly forgot the most important thing.
Rene: (panic) Oh, my God! The Gateau from the Chateau!
Geering: What about the Gateau from the Chateau?
Rene: It contains a bomb!!!
Geering: A bomb in the Gateau from the Chateau???
Rene: It is to blow up the General! You must not let anyone light that fuse.
Geering: But where is the fuse?
Rene: It is the candle with the handle.
Geering: You do not need to kill the General, we have already arranged to kill the General... Do you not see? That if we kill him with the pill from the till by making with it the drug in the jug, you need not light the Candle with handle on the Gateau from the Chateau!
Rene: Simple plots are always the best.

Tonight is indeed 'Allo 'Allo! night tongue.gif
boomtown_rat
Sort of show that I found funny at the time but would maybe cringe at now (not that I've seen it for years) - Germany's a bit late picking up on it isn't it!
cb6dba
I'm not sure whats making me laugh more...

The post from Bilby or Boomtown_rat for suggesting germans may have been a little slow on taking something up laugh.gif

Easy. Sat through enough of 'em with me Mum cryin' with laughter. Still didn't find 'em funny. Same jokes repeated over and over and over again ad nausuem.

Zat ist not funny!
Ve make ze chokes!

Reminds me of a scene where Rene is looking for somewhere to hide from the resistance and he goes to the secret headquarters of the gestapo and asks to be locked up and Herr Flick says something like 'No, certainly not. Ve are ze Gestapo and ve pick ze people we lock up. Ve can't have people walking in here off ze street asking to be locked up!'

No. They recently showed it almost non-stop on one of the ITV channels and I found it to be lame. Of course, I still can't figure out what was so great about Benny Hill, the Carry On crap or what up with the Buses either. It is all just one big boob (or lack of boobs) joke after another. It is like the phase kids go through somewhere between potty humor and getting stoned. Although getting stoned would help the enjoyment factor I would imagine.

According to expert trials, no, it don't.

Ok, the little guy is saying "klop" or "klomp"..

Anyone any idea if it means anything?

So, no surprise that the pair who spent the weekend moaning about Thatcher and (de facto) hankering for the days when Michael Foot was in the Kremlin having tea with Breschnev, do not get 'Allo, 'Allo.

Its the last syllable - he's too lazy to say the whole thing so joins in at the end with the last syllable to make it sound like he said it all.

Hey, maybe they use the opportunity and add some jokes with the German dubbing.?
And I wouldn't count to much on a public outcry, Hogan's Heroes, basically a show about a funny KZ, has been in the morning programme for years.
