Where to shop for men's work clothes

Ok, my work wardrobe needs refreshing big time so I had a browse in town on Saturday.
My "look" is not a full on suit - I don't work in finance and have little "representitive" work like sales or dealing with customers face to face.
Neither am I the most casually dressed, I tend to dress above "casual Friday".
I wear jeans sometimes, but with a proper shirt and don't go in in a t-shirt like some colleagues do.

I found Zara and a bit too fashionable and H&M not as cheap as they claim to be and their city centre store is far too damned small!
I found some nice shirts in Konen and ONE nice shirt in Esprit, I'll shop there if its on sale and this stuff was.

But when I totted it all up I was looking at dropping a few hundred Euros easily.

Then I walked passed C&A. Classic looking stuff that isn't going to go out of fashion. And much lower prices, shirts all under €20 etc.
And you can even get suits there, made to meassure if you want.

I wasn't thinking of going completely C&A but using it for some stuff after I'd got the bargains from elsewhere.
Or is that too "Über Pikey" and like a paper wholesalers in Slough?

Well actually, I do buy quite a few items from C+A these days.

My weight loss brought their size range into my size range!!

Having said that, they now have a "Mr Fat Bastards" department where most of the clothes will fit even the fattest of the locals and many Amis... unsure.gif

Have you tried Wormland as well? They do some designer brands which are obviously quite pricey, but my husband has quite a few of their own brand shirts (which don' t say Wormland on them, don't worry), and they are decent quality and quite nice...

Get a cheap flight home & go to next rolleyes.gif

Try Hirmer, not the cheapest but the quality is better than C&A, the styles are classic and their own brand stuff is quiet hard wearing.

In addition to Wormland on Marienplatz, I'd also recommend Massimo Dutti on Theatinerstrasse.

I get my work clothes from Hagenbaumarkt..

When I am on the job, I am often down on my knees..

The Knee pads are quite comfortable!

Hirmer is the place to go when they have sales. Prices are much lower than usual and merchandise quality is very good.
It's always worth to spend a few euros extra for the good quality.
C&A's quality is very variable in my experience. I tend not to buy much there nowadays. However, things like jeans and other items which are inherently resistant to the usual tear and wear are ok.
The Karstadt shop in Oberppollinger may also have some nice things some times. They have nice sales on Eterntiy shirts from time to time, just check now and then as they are not announced.

My brother loves C&A shirts, I post them to him in New Zealand. What this has to say about NZ fashion, I know not. Some of their stuff looks a bit *pimp-tastic* mind. Oh, hang on...
If you are shirt shopping in the UK, Uniqlo shirts are fantastic: no nasty colours, the collars don't go all rolled and horrid and they are exceptionally cheap. Iron beautifully. Sizing is errr Japanese though.
gideon
Was he exiled to NZ because of his taste? C&A shirts are a little too thin. Good point about ironing, after years of badgering my wife she let me get an new iron (which I do) and has given in and starches my shirts, though why she resisted to do this heaven knows it only takes three seconds. This keeps your shirts looking good, and keep their form longer through the day.

Also depending on your style think about getting shirts with separate collar bones, the built in plastic ones are shite. Invest in metal collar bones, if you feel it's what you want, otherwise you can leave the collar unstiffened. Then we have the french cuff and cufflink thing, which isn't big here but is standard in Blighty. For a bit of fizz I'd recommend Paul Smith cufflinks.

He *is* my brother, of course his taste is dodgy, it is genetic.

Does anyone else find that non-iron shirts are just, well, sweatier? They just never, ever look as good as an ironed shirt. Ever.

I bought a new suit only the other week. Something I only do once in a blue moon.

C & A, Peek and Beklopptenburg, Kaufhof, Karstadt, and H & M all came in the engere Wahl. I think C & A are ok for suits only if you restrict yourself to their top of the range stuff. Anything else looks and feels "pikey" to my mind. P & K I find too pricey and bourgeous (sure you'll agree with me there wink.gif Kaufhof/Karstadt didnt have what I wanted.

Was sceptical about buying a suit from the likes of H & M, whom I regard as purveyors of cheap cloth teenage rags that have that stereotyped H & M look about them. Almost the Top Shop of Germany, but they actually had a cool stylish suit which was pretty much what I was looking for. So that was what I ended up buying.

Dont worry about the sleeves. They'll ride up with wear. Now, will you take the gentleman`s inside leg for me Miss Brahms...

Never noticed any problems. But then I only buy iron-free shirts. And never "Bugelleicht" either. Dont fall for that. Bugeln is never leicht! I cant anyway, I dont possess an ironing board, and never will.

Wouldnt wear anything that had "Wormland" on the label. Bad enough when it says C & A!

Ironing is what god invented black and white sunday afternoon films for. And at 2 Euros a pop to get someone else to do it, and 20 shirts a month I'd rather buy the odd DVD. And yes I'm from Yorkshire, with Scottish ancestry (but long nough back for it not to be embarrasing) and have a jewish name.
