Adaptors for using a U.S. laptop in Germany

Convertors for North American power plugs

Well, I'm heading to Munich this week and my laptop will, of course, be at my side. Can anyone recommend a laptop converter/adapter that will convert my North American plug to European electricity?
Thanks.

All you need is an adapter to make your ac plug physically fit into the wall outlet. You can pick one of those up at radio shack, circuit city, best buy, etc. $5 maybe?

Sorry to be non-technical, but the standard box in your ac cord that's about halfway between your computer and the outlet converts the voltage for you.

This is true for many electronics these days. For example the charger for my camera and my PSP both work fine. You can check on the transformer if it supports 100v/240v 50/60Hz then you can get away with a much smaller and cheaper converter.

Only problem I ever had was to charge my Braun electric toothbrush. I used something to change the voltages but the base was still getting way too hot.

Better, (much) safer and no more expensive to simply replace the power cable itself... I'm not aware of any Laptop PSU what is not multi-voltage and multi-frequency (typically 110v-240c, 50-60Hz) so the power supply itself does not need changing, just the connecting cable.

Make sure you read the print on the back/bottom of the box in the middle of your power cable. Make sure that it DOES say 110-240 VAC 50-60 HZ. If it doesn't, then it's not dual voltage. You would then require a transformer/converter. If it does, just go to any Radio Shack or Circuit City and get a 3 prong US to 2 prong German plug adaptor (unless you have a 2 prong plug, then get a 2 prong US to 2 prong German adaptor).

I can only re-iterate that a plug converter is a short term solution and should not be used for longer periods. It's mechanically unstable and could be electrically dangerous. Better to simply replace the cable connecting power to the transformer block. These are easily available for under €5 and provide a safer long-term connection. When back in the US take the original cable with you.

I came from the UK with my laptop and just use a normal plug adaptor, no problem at all. What i'm intending to do tho is sell the British laptop on ebay and eventually buy a German one, problem solved
