Immigration lawyer recommendations

For help with getting German citizenship

OK.

Apparently I am now eligible for German citizenship. I used to have it and gave it up 10 years ago when I took Aussie citizenship. Thus I've only had to live in Germany a fraction of the time most people do to be eligible.

The German government is not very forthcoming when it comes to dual citizenship and will generally expect you to give up your foreign citizenship if you decide to take it. There are, however, exceptions. Most are reserved for other EU countries, but there are other special circumstances under which you can retain your old citizenship.

Basically, I'm looking for someone who is an expert in this part of the law who can tell me if I have any chance and then help me draft the accompanying letter explaining why I want to retain Aussie citizenship if there's a reasonable chance.

If you know a lawyer who is an expert in this field and you could recommend him/her, then I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
H

My law firm which is located in the USA and only practising German Law is handling quite a few dual citizenship cases. Most of them are with US, Canadian or South African citizenship.
In general it is possible for a German Citizen to get another citizenship, while keeping German Citizenship, if a permission to keep German Citizenship is issued before taking another citizenship. For this it is necessary to have reasons why to keep German Citizenship (Family, property and so on) and good reasons why you want the foreign citizenship (like disadvantages if you don't get it).

The same is the case if you have foreign citizenship and want to become a dual citizen by getting German Citizenship while keeping the other citizenship.
This is possible (and easier if you or your parents were German citizens in the past). But it is still an open decission and needs good reasoning. Giving up Australian Citizenship have to lead to disadvantages for you if you want to keep it while getting German citizenship.

There is usually a few general disadvantages for people living in Australia if they don't have Australian Citizenship. Because you live in Germany it is a little harder.
Would have to look at it more closely.

Feel free to contact our office regarding a consultation. There are also a few more law firms handling that kind of cases. Througha web search you could probably find some of them.

Best regards and best luck
