Has any one else noticed how many German women like to dye their hair an unusual ( by that I mean that there is no way the color could be natural) shade of red?
The color almost always tends to be fire engine red that you can tell was probably bought at the 99 cent store.
I have also noticed a lot of older women with what can only be described as purple hair. Huh?
Is there some sort of reason for this? Anyone else noticed it?

Is it the kind that will only stay in a week? For some reason I have been wanting to try that (dye my hair pink, that is).

im not sure about that, but if you are looking for pink that only stays in for about a week or two,you should try "directions"(at least thats what i think they are called), they have alot of different pink colours and u get them at the "friseurfachbedarf" not far away from stachus.hope that helps
I liked to experiment with colors on my hair, so I've tried all kind of red, purple etc. it's fun for certain age I guess.
but now I hate unnatural colors but my own brown

Doesn't matter what nationality she is. She looks like one in 5 women who push you out of line in the supermarket in Germany.

The ones that scare me are the middle-aged women with short short bright red hair (which they don´t style at all, it just pokes out every which way) who look totally butch even though they are usually married to a conservative looking German man. Though they are everywhere, I couldn´t find a pic in a
google image search.

The ones that scare me are the middle-aged women with short short bright red hair (which they don´t style at all, it just pokes out every which way) who look totally butch ...Don't forget compulsory visible grey roots and extra layers of candyfloss pink and aubergine spray leftovers from
Fasching...
And Hair Icon Mark2: the women police officers (also DB ticket collectors) Straw-blond shoulder-length hair poking out in every direction from uniform caps... what an image for the service! (Accessorised usually by hastily stubbed out fag)
Kids go in for colouring their hair very young too; peer-pressure resulted in my own two boys turning their hair all sorts of ghastly shades between the ages of 14 and 16. By the time they're 20 I think most kids don't know what their hair colour really is! It's a shame I think, because so many young girls make themselves look so hard-faced, and actually scary-looking to the boys ... maybe that's the intention!
(I remember agonising over using colour the first time age about 30 to cover the grey speckles, felt like a tramp! Shows my age and upbringing I suppose!)

I think hair coloring can be lots of fun -- my youngest sister has beautiful natural red hair and has done a lot of fun stuff with it, like dying just the last couple of inches black. I have to admit, I am more of a purist and, after a short excursion into the world of highlighting, have returned to my normal color. I suppose when I start going gray I might think about coloring again.

In general, or what for $500 alex.
However, there are always exceptions. If you think you are one of them, you are most likely wrong.

It's because people here are perfectly human in that they want to hide grey (just ask Gerhard Schroeder), but they're all a complete bunch of cheapskates.
If you're mousey brown in any other western culture, you go to the salon and have it turned blonde ... then the brown roots come out and you have to go back to the salon so you don't look like a hooker.
The red thing means the roots can grow out for a longer period of time ... thus saving one trips to the salon. I have this on good authority from a co-worker who does it.
Kinda makes one wonder why they don't dye it brown ;-)
In fairness, little old ladies in the U.S. sometimes use a hideous blue rinse ... over which weird-ass German red is clearly preferable.

My hair is naturally that colour, damn Irish roots, get some slagging over it, even from my boss. He calls me Pumuckl
I find the old ladies with the purple a little disturbing. Still I'd take the colouring over the mullet any day!

You just have to see it for what it is! These little old ladies have finally discovered the punk deep down inside of them. I say "Go, Granny! Dye that hair purple or blue!"

I've noticed that too. Very short aggressive-looking hair, small specs, no make-up, casually dressed, baggy clothes, natural fibres, sensible shoes. I don't know whether it's a hippy thing, or a punk thing, or what, but for such a conventional society they look slightly unconventional. On the other hand, the fact that there are so many of them probably makes them conventional.

For me, there's only one woman who can work this look. That woman is
Claudia Roth.Wikipedia: Claudia RothDid notice that the German lady competitor (not the hound, the
trainer Lynn Hesel) in the
Crufts 2008 Heelwork to Music had exactly the hair mentioned in this thread. Funny that.

I didn't say that she was German, it was just an example of the German orangey-red hair colour I was talking about! It doesn't matter what nationality the woman is, whoever she is (I just googled 'red hair').

I'm sorry Jester - I really like natural red hair, and lots of dyed red hair shades too. It's just one particular 'orangey-red' shade of hairdye I don't like because it's so obviously fake, so I'm sure that yours is lovely!

The logic behind dying your hair red goes like this: When you have an undefinable hair colour between dark blond and brown (aka "straßenköterblond"), you look in the mirror and say: Gosh, this is so boring, something must be done. But because you don't want to spend a lot of money at the hairdresser, you go ahead and bleach your hair yourself. But instead of blond it turns out orange, green, or falls out. Then, to control the damage, you decide to dye it in a brunette shade, only to discover that this can make the face look harsh and older, if it's not the natural colour. So the only option left is red, and to stand out from all the other red-haired ladies, you go for a daring shade (it even brings out your unsuspected wild side). But we Germans think practical, hence a short hair style – and voilà the butch type.
