Hiya
seeing as there are at least 3 Astonites here in TTM, we should really look at having a meet-up. We'll even be generous and let Brum Uni people come along.
No set date at the moment - just to see if there is much interest.
Could go for a balti at Rama (Arnulfstr.) for that real Midlands touch.
Any takers?

Are you all going to speak in annoying accents?

@ grtho Now that IS a good idea
I'm getting out of practice. If we can have a German-speaking Stammtisch then why not a Brummie one?
Sorry, wandering off-topic far too soon...

PS This is the real Birmingham. Not that Johnny-come-lately place in the US of A.
Just look at

I used to live near there. Not the nicest of areas.
Fortunately I was only there for one year. Highlights included a car burning in the middle of the street with all the local chav kids just standing there watching it, and a guy breaking into the flat (while we were in) and then claiming he'd only come in to hide because he was "being chased by some niggers". Turned out he was hiding from the police.

really, did you live near there?
I used to live near there, too, in Erdington - it wasn't that bad (did you ever live in Alum Rock? that was bad!!!)

I lived/worked in and around Brum for 4 years, Kings Norton, Cotteridge and Halesowen while working in West Bromwich. Must say found the Black country accent far harder to understand than the brummie.
Jeeves
Oct 28 2004, 1:57 pm
@pepper Indeed. And as has been pointed out previously on this forum (by you perchance?) a lot of people mistake the former for the latter (especially actors). Brummie is not so bad apart from the singy intonation, whilst Black Country is ard loik.

@topsy I lived on George Road, near the junction with Slade Road.
You can see it on

I lived in Highfield Road opposite the dole office (so where Saltley meets Washwood Heath). That was fine, we had the bus depot around the corner so could get home really easily on any of the 90/91/92/93/94 buses.

hey, l went to Brum Uni - lived in Selly Oak most of the time.
l'll come for a curry as long as it's not just dodgy types from Aston Uni.
Only went to Aston once, what was that pub called, Sack of Potatoes, or something? It was a local pub, for local people!
Curry sounds good - somewhere where they do chicken balti or similar please

Surely you used to live near me in Newcastle?
Got off with someone once and was "busy" all night. Opened his curtains next morning and went "oh Shit, there was a fire in the house over the road in the night!" Oh and the next one, and the next one and the next one.
There'd been a mini riots in the night (that we hadn't heard) and the kids had torched half the estate, but that's North Shields for you!

@Billybob: I was at Brum uni aswell, would be good to share some stories...
@Katrina: Thanks for extending the invite to us BrumUni scum!!! ;-)
I'm in if I can make it...

Oh satman, I'm amazed. You seemed such a nice bloke.

What day of the week would be good for everyone? Or is that a bad question?

billybob
Oct 28 2004, 2:38 pm
tuesday is ok for me too
me and satman can sit at a separate table and throw food at the others then - will be just like student times again, ahhhh. Them were the days, by 'eck.
make mine a snakebite and black, yum
Katrina
Oct 28 2004, 2:41 pm
yum? vom more like

Tues fine with me. Now dates? 9th or 16th Nov?
Topsy
Oct 28 2004, 2:46 pm
well, I could theoretically do either, but would prefer 16th
don't really mind too much, though
JoolyBooly
Oct 28 2004, 3:13 pm
The question is, do we have to wear Freakers costumes? (or, more to the point... can we?!)
And despite having spent 3 years there, I can't do the accent... you can take the girl of of Kent, but you can't take Kent out of the girl... (please don't mis-pronounce...)
I'm in, but on Tuesdays only after 7.45 as I have skool.
16th sounds fine

Oct 28 2004, 3:16 pm
3 years there, I lived there for 4 without going to any of the Uni's, does that qualify me to come along as well ?

Oct 28 2004, 3:16 pm
"Snake bite and black"... thats a blast from the past! Until they started doing Blastaways (castaways and diamond white if I recall correctly)... now they really lived up to the name!
Would prefer Wednesday though? Although I think I'm outnumbered for a Tuesday.
pepper
Oct 28 2004, 3:19 pm
God a blastaway, I've had some horrible nights out drinking that stuff, well that's at least what the pictures and people afterwards say, I generally cannot remember anything.
Oh. and yes it's a castaway and a diamond white, although some bars I went into used to change the diamond white for something else, but it did not taste as good.

@ pepper, sure you can come - you can be our token townie
JoolyBooly
Oct 28 2004, 3:24 pm
wednesday's fine for me...
as long as no-one approaches me with a Blastaway... I used to love those things until I lost my natural homing device and ended up in bed with a man wearing a wetsuit with a cucumber down his trousers...
pepper
Oct 28 2004, 3:26 pm
Can you still buy a blastaway ? come to that, I'll mix it myself, just need the castaway, then cider.

You too? It wasn't down his trousers with me though

I have no comment about things/carnage/people I have done after Blastaway. None at all. Nope not me. Oh no. Must have me mixed up with someone else.
Weds fine for me too. 17th?
And I'll try and get some Castaway from somewhere...
Topsy

OK, go for 17th, fine by me.
@ satman - doesn't that mean you won't get there til 10pm, though?

@Topsy: I can make it shortly after 9, as my course is not too far away (assuming I don't have another puncture on my bike that is!)

Fellow Brummies, I was in Rama last night for a quick cuzza after badminton, and my! was it gooood...
So I just unilaterally reserved a few spaces for our Brum Reunion next week. I deliberately didn't pick the Balti Chicken, I thought I'd leave it for next week.
Are we still on for meeting up and reminiscing?

JoolyBooly
Nov 12 2004, 4:32 pm
cool, yep. So where is Rama?
Topsy
Nov 12 2004, 4:41 pm
Rama is here - we're talking the one on Arnulfstr., mind, not the one in Ismaning.
Two ways to get there:
Tram 16 or 17 to Donnersbergerstr (5 or 6 stops from Hbf) - it's a 1 minute walk
Any S-Bahn to Donnersbergerbrücke - walk from there up to Arnulfstr (head towards the Mercedes star), it's a 5 minute walk
What time do you reckon? 7.30pm? 8pm?
JoolyBooly
Nov 12 2004, 4:44 pm
pref. 8pm, then can fit in work and gym to burn off calories before the binge ;o)

hi, l'm still up for this...
but roots has organised his
curry night to be at the same place on the same day - not much of a Brum night out then? any thoughts anyone since l was looking forward to sniggering at some amusingly strong brummie accents...
JoolyBooly
Nov 15 2004, 10:59 am
no problem, we will sit seperately and bombard them with naan... and maybe curry...
Topsy
Nov 15 2004, 11:19 am
They do a Balti, which is why they got picked as the location. The food there is fab, as well.
I can't think of anywhere else with a strong Brummie connection, really - unless we go Chinese and order "freud royce" or similar
JoolyBooly
Nov 15 2004, 11:20 am
as I said yesterday, Lemar is fab so we could go there instead. But I'm sure we'll survive Rama too! And Lemar is Afghani, no balti
satish
Nov 15 2004, 12:03 pm
So are we actually part of the alternative
curry night or not? I've put my name down for it, although I'm actually there for the Brummie meetup..

I picked Rama because Topsy wanted to combine Brum night with us. Otherwise we would have gone to New Delhi as originally planned. Just want to clarify that before everybody start pointing fingers at me once again.

yeah - I thought it would be a good idea. but if people don't agree, then we can do it somewhere else.

There is a balti on the menu - that's why we picked Rama in the first place.

I've never tried the balti, but I think Satman has.
