English-speaking doctors in Hamburg

Recommendations, and how the system works

c4th
Hi all,
please let me know if you have a good experience with an english speaking doctor in Hamburg (preferably Altona/Eimsbüttel area) - I just got my insurance card and soon enough must decide which doctor to go to. Heard about the 10€ pay (admin/registration?) system per quarter, so assume I should not change doctor if dont wanna spend more than that per quarter. Would appreciate any input. Thanks loads.

If you go to one doctor, you have to pay the € 10 per quarter, you can then get "Überweisungsschein" (transfer) from this practice to any other doctor, just tell them you have to go to the gyn or what ever other doctor...
Exception: dentists.

Your insurance provider might have a list of English speaking doctors, just ask them...or have a German speaking colleague as them for you!

When I had PhillipsBKK, I got a list from them, even specialists who speak English.

Hi there,

Enquiring as to a recommended family doctor (or advice as to how to locate one) in and around the likes of Uhlenhorst, Winterhude, Eilbek, Barmbek Sued etc... or wherever really..

Also a brief synopsis as to how the health system works would be grand. When we previously lived in HH I was fortunate not to require medical assistance. Now as a Mummy ... I feel that has changed

c) Are you zoned to an area? i.e. you have a selection of doctors to choose from based on where you live. Or is it a free rein?
b) Are doctors universal? That is attends to both adult and children's needs or are they specific, or will we need a paediatrician.
c) Are all doctors available regardless of your type of health insurance i.e. fully private or 50:50. Is the same service of care offered regardless of the type?
d) Depending on how long it takes to register us with our local amt and obtain health insurance, does that preclude us from being seen by a doctor?

Any tips, experiences, recommendations etc would be fantastic.
Thanks heaps

Hi Kiwi-German,
a)You're not "zoned" to areas, you're free to visit any doctor you wish.
b)General Practitioners (or family doctors) will see everyone but Pediatricians know more about children so I'd suggest you take your kid to one.
c)Most doctors take both privately and non-privately insured patients, some are known to only (or mostly) treat privately insured but it'd be unusual if they'd turn you down because of your insurance. Also the care they give here is pretty good, there's a few advantages a privately insured person gets that they might not even need in years, so on that note, I wouldn't worry too much about what type you have.
d)In my experience we got registered in no time at the amt, it shouldn't take that long, but in any case, should you need to visit a doctor before your insurance papers are through you can expect to pay the whole bill, the amount of course depending on what the Doctor had to do for you.
Hope this helped, have a great day!
P.S.Unfortunately my doctors are quite far from those neighborhoods but good luck finding one, from those 3 options I recommend Winterhude area...

I have used this doctor and can recommend him as a good and thorough doctor. He speaks very good English with an English accent too!

The downside is that he's extremely busy and even when you have an appointment he seems to take people on a first come first served basis. I never waited less than 90 minutes, even with an appointment. If you have the time, he's excellent.

Ya i went to Dr. Hofmeister, speaks perfect English(American Accent), very thorough. would highly recommend him. no appointment needed.
