Suggested routes and places to visit

Thinking of driving to the Alps this weekend with our 12 year old daughter. Can anyone suggest some good places to visit and maybe suggest a route. Also, any ideas what the driving conditions will be like?

What do you want to see? How far do you want to go? Will you be spending the night somewhere?

Have the whole weekend free so quite easy going. We have no firm plans at all (i know not helpful). We could stay overnight if needs be. It would be good if we can see things that would be interesting for my 12 year old?

This advice is already all over this board but:
Make sure your car has good winter tyres. If it snows or is cold and you're on small narrow/twisty mountain roads be careful, don't drive like the Austrians do. Make sure you have high viz vests and all the other guff the Austrians require of you.
You don't need to go far to see nice things, but before going for a walk I'd get a guide book. Search this board for Michael Pause for a book I like (in German but you'll get the idea). A great walk is from Walchensee up the cable car to Heimgarten.
For driving tours the 305 towards Salzburg is quite OK round the edge of the mountains.
Overnight stays are fun and usually it's not necessary to book as you'll always find something if you're a bit creative (many towns have a directory of hotels on the main road into the town with a free phone) unless this happens to be a big school holiday weekend.

Maybe you could give some more clues as to what you would like to do?

Honestly - I would like to stay in the nice warm car maybe go for a hot chocolate somewhere with a great view. "He" will probably want to look at something historical perhaps a museum/castle and have a walk about. My daughter will probably want to ride a cable car. Families rolleyes.gif

Then I would suggest the Zugspitze in Garmisch Partenkirchen. It is the highest peak in Germany, you get to take a cogwheels and then a series of cablecars to get to the top, should please everyone. It is highway (A95) 85% of the way there, straight country road and long tunnel the rest. Easy to find, only an hour or two away (depending on the traffic), and lovely. Here is a link

I'll put it to the vote this evening - thanks. Looks fun!

Instead of the Zugspitze go to Garmisch but take the Eckbauer cable car from the olympic stadium and I assume the 'Alm' on top is open for a got chocolate while admiring the view. Driving to Garmisch no problem with normal car/tyres

Then if you have time and inclination or want somewhere to stay maybe take the road past Linderhof and end up in Füssen

If you are going to go up the Eckbauer make sure, first that your kid isn't afraid of heights or cable cars, the eckbauer is a little 2 man thing, also wear good hiking boots as the alm is a little walk fromn the cable car station, I did it a couple of weeks ago, my friend was terrified, (I learnt once we were on it that she is afraid of both cable cars and heights!) and we had on tennis shoes, nearly broke our necks getting to the bloody gasthaus.
