My student told me the U-Bahn and all buses are on strike tomorrow joined by the S-bahn and all other passenger trains on Monday. Anyone heard for how long or is it an indefinite one?

Verdi is on strike but not everywhere. I think only Berlin is a full out strike, other locations may very. My son's kiga will be closed tomorrow here in Munich.

Verdi Aktivitäten vor Ort

I don't see Berlin listed for tomorrow, but our TA at work got the email this morning about where they were and she said the Berlin was to be fully targeted. unsure.gif

I'd say it's pretty all out strike in Berlin though other places are affected.

- According to the BBC at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7278937.stm

"Frankfurt airport cancelled about 80 flights and said services would not back to normal until Thursday.

The strike has also grounded 142 Lufthansa flights, mainly on domestic routes, with Stuttgart, Munich, Cologne and other airports hit..."

and

"In Berlin, a separate strike by transport workers has hit subway, tram and bus services.

Train drivers' union GDL has also threatened strikes starting next Monday on both passenger and freight trains, intensifying an existing argument with Deutsche Bahn. "

On the wall of Konstablewache station here in FF was a sign saying U-bahns would be out tomorrow and apparently the buses too. I just wondered if some of these beamters drive the U-bahns or buses? I dont know whether to cancel my students or not:(

Those who are verbeamtet will not be on strike as they are not allowed to strike. It's other public employees who are striking in public transit, trash services, airport services, etc.

Frankfurt public transit will be affected tomorrow, Thursday, March 6: http://www.vgf-ffm.de/vgf/5755.jsp
Buses, trams, and U-Bahn will not be running, with a few exceptions.
The Trafiq-operated buses (lines 24-29, 56, 60, 69, 71-73) are expected to run.
VGF and ICB-operated buses may run (lines 30 -39, 42-44, 50-55, 57-59, 61, 63, 64, 66, 68, 78, 79)--contingent on the drivers being able to get out of the depots.

The S-Bahn should be okay.

Bummer:( It is the U-bahn and bus I would be using tomorrow:( Will have to cancel students then and reschedule. Does it say how long the strike is set to continue for? Is it a 24 hour strike?

I suppose it would be too early to speculate about the situation for Fri. 14th unsure.gif ... I'm scheduled to fly transatlantic and it'd suck @ss if both DB and Ver.di decide to strike then.. !@#$ mad.gif

It's a 24 hour strike for now.
Berlin is the only city I'm aware of with something more than a 24 hour strike (some cities have now had two 24 hour strikes.)

Yes, it's still too soon to know about next week. DB will be publishing an interim timetable on Friday that they will use if GDL strikes take place next week.

Where can we find out if the S-bahn is striking on Monday?

As of now, the GDL (train engineers' union) will be striking beginning on Monday. Deutsche Bahn is trying to get a court injunction against the strike, but the court won't be hearing the case until 10AM on Monday last I heard. Additionally, DB claims it is working this weekend to reach some sort of agreement with the GDL.

DB has set up a hotline number to get info (toll-free): 0800 099 6633
They have also published temporary schedules to provide 'limited, but stable service'.
Long distance trains: http://statistik.bahn.de/lnkcnt.php?et=n5E..._2008-03-10.pdf

If you click on the appropriate Bundesland on the map here you can see the schedules for regional service (including RE, RB, and S-Bahn):
http://www.bahn.de/blitz/view/index.shtml
The Frankfurt S-Bahn schedule, for instance, is here: http://www.bahn.de/blitz/view/mdb/tp/UF0-a..._09_03_2008.pdf

If your train is canceled or you miss a connection, you are able to use even a local ticket for the previous or next train operating, even if it is a more expensive train (i.e., you could take an IC or ICE).

Will Frankfurt U-Bahn be running as usual tomorrow? (Monday)

At this time, yes.
However, the Bahn strike may make things on the U-Bahn extra crowded.

The media are reporting now that the Bahn strike for tomorrow has been avoided as an agreement between DB and the GDL has been reached. However, there will still be lots of cancellations because DB can't instantaneously revert back to normal train schedules. Regional trains and the S-Bahn are expected to return to normal more quickly than long distance trains (the equipment is mostly where it needs to be).

It looks like there is a deal to avert all out strikes on DB by workers organised in GDL.
But public trasnport workers organised in Verdi are in still in conflict with their employers.

Strikes on buses, trams and U-bahns as well as other public services are set to continue.

Other than Berlin, I'm not aware of any current U-Bahn, Bus, etc. ver.di strikes currently scheduled/in effect. I know the disagreement continues, but do you know of other strikes?
MonksTown
No details of new VERDi strikes that I know of. People need to keep an eye on the local papers and if and when they happen in the bigger cities, they gt eported on (an commented on) on TT I guess.
