Austrian skier Matthias Lanzinger was in a stable condition on Tuesday after undergoing an emergency amputation of his lower left leg.
Doctors said Lanzinger, who broke the leg in a World Cup race in Norway on Sunday, might have died without the operation.

Story here.

They said on the radio that not only was there no helicopter ambulance, but the private one they did end up using had to have a seat removed before they could get him in.

They also said on the radio that if so much time had not been wasted getting him to the hospital then the lower leg could have been saved.

Was watching this on the television on Sunday. His leg went round and round. Truely horrific. Poor chap.

It seems that there was no helicopter near by and also that the hospital in Lillehammer was not sufficiently well equipped, so he was operated on six hours (which is an eternity in a case like that) after the accident.

Here's a link to the video - with a warning that the accident is pretty sickening to the stomach. From YouTube

My colleague in the office said the major problem was the binding not releasing early enough. Looks to me in the video like it was the LAST twist before the ski was released that did the damage.

I am really really surprised that they did not have a helicopter right there on standby - I would have assumed this was a minimum, maybe even with a 2nd on backup 5 mins away.
