It seems our coal heating oven has backed up and probably needs cleaning. I'm not sure how to go about this. Coming from Canada I can tell you this is my first experience using coal as a heating source in the house.
We've never had a problem before, but now it seems to smoke and smolder rather than burn nicely.
Hoping for a warm spring...soon.
Any advice?
Thanks.

Contact your landlord and the local schornsteinfeger.

You could also do it yourself by buying the chimmney brushes and pushing them up

I also sometimes feel like i have a problem with the coal oven. does anyone have a good calculation for how much coal should be used in a small apartment 40 sqm in one day or week approximately? just seems like we are using a lot of coal sometimes and its not that warm, but then again im from australia and freeze here anyway.
what is the price on coal, the best place to buy it?

Hi - we just looked at an apartment with coal heating. I do not know anyone who's ever used coal - can anyone tell me whether this is a definite avoid or what it involves? (eg. how it works and does it smell??!)
Thanks

Avoid coal heating... It is too much effort. A friend of mine had a lot of nasal problems in an apartment in Berlin because the coal dust / soot (whatever) can sometimes float around the room.
Most apartments (where the owner can be bothered) are switching away from coal. Guess it depends on how much rent you are willing to pay.
Personally I wouldn't even look at an "Ofenheizung" apartment
