I'm looking for local community advert sites in Australia, or more specifically, Melbourne. Does anyone know if there's anything like craigslist?
Thanks!

Well there is Craigslist.
http://melbourne.craigslist.com.au/ Not sure if you already know about that one (and it does not seem too terribly active anyway), just thought I'd mention it just in case.

Yeah, I know it exists, but nobody seems to use it. All the ads are for things in Melbourne, Florida.

Don't know if this is the same...how about
Gumtree?

Yes, thank you , I did see that one when I did a quick search. I guess what I was after was something remotely as popular in Melbourne as craigslist is in SF or TT in Munich.
@IPJ, Are you three moving to Australia?

From my experience living in Melbourne (and I dont know what craiglist is, I am guessing just online ads?), we don't have much. Maybe
www.tradingpost.com.au is close to what you are looking for? Otherwise ebay or put an ad in the newspaper, or even look at newspapers websites, www.theage.com.au, or
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/. I don't think that Australians buy as much online as other people. What are you looking to buy or sell? I might be able to point you in the right direction...

It's not final yet, but there's a very high likelihood that I'll be moving there before the year is out.

Hmm, depends...do they have pulpits?

Actually, I didn't even think about the trading post. Good call. I'm looking for a site where people both sell goods (bought most of my furniture in my current apartment on
craigslist) and property. I'm trying to look through as many sites as possible to get a good idea of the house prices in different suburbs. I've already looked quite extensively through
realestate.com.au.

You might be better off looking at Auction Houses where you might be able to buy what you need in one go or 2nd hand furniture shops. I haven't been there in an age but from my knowledge of Melbourne there used to be several in the inner suburbs.

I have referred your enquiry to Australians (Melbournites) who haven't been away as long as me! Unfortunately I realized my knowledge is a bit lacking these days. If they come up with anything not already posted I will of course add it here.

Best for property is realestate.com.au, but also try domain.com.au (but often just has the same).
I don't know about furniture... but probably just ebay! Or just wait til you get there and go to garage sales and second hand shops. However when I first moved to Melbourne (I was a poor student), I couldn't find much. Only second hand shops I found were quite expensive and so I ended up buying new from ikea and fantastic furniture (some is crap quality, some is OK).
Hope this helps! Need any more info about Melbourne, let me know, it is a great city!

Actually Bec22 is probably spot on about the garage sales but then you'd need transportation to take everything away. Somebody else suggested the Salvation Army shops and there are Op shops (charity shops). (...I do miss them!) Age classifieds (Saturday) are good too.

Or you can do the typical student thing... wait for hard rubbish day, and pick up whatever you need off the side of the road! You can get some great stuff

Fortunately, that won't be necessary. It will be quite the opposite, actually. Our student days are over and done with, and my husband will be working there as a lecturer.
