Genie , maybe im overreacing , but in my opinion, its a bit bloody dumb to drop bombs even in the near of a life boat . Lets not forget that the German commander had sent numerous distress signals , had broadcast in English his own position , and stated that he would not attack any allied ships that came to help so long as he was not attacked .

As Sin pointed out , the lifeboats and u- boats in the area were also decked with Red Coss flags .
Sin
But surely, humphs, these were ravenous evil baby eating Germans frothing at the mouth for Western blood and deserved to die under any circumstances?

QUOTE
... Allan Wyse, formerly of 193 Fighter Squadron, said "We used our cannon fire at the chaps in the water … we shot them up with 20 mm cannons in the water. Horrible thing, but we were told to do it and we did it. That's war." ...
humphs
You mean the "we dont give a damn how many other people who happend to be in the area at the time also die , so long as we kill one of our enemies" mentality was in action even in those days ?
Sin
Talking of, "That's war" miwild, weren't the survivors of the RAF attack on the Cap Arcona who managed to swim to shore gunned down by the SS? Bit of a bugger having all sides against you in a war, I'd say. However, the Cap Arcona was not marked.
humphs
and the passenger liner SS Deutschland, possibly converted to a hospital ship but not marked as such, were attacked by RAF Typhoons of 83 Group of the 2nd Tactical Air Force commanded by Sir Arthur Coningham as part of general attacks on shipping in the Baltic.

Not marked as a hospital ship ...

However , lifeboats are quite easily recogniseable i think.

From the Cap Arcona article:

QUOTE
... On May 2, 1945, Second Army reached the towns of Lübeck and Wismar. 11th Armoured Division commanded by Major-General George P. B. Roberts enter Lübeck without resistance. The International Red Cross informed him that 7,000-8,000 prisoners were on board ships in Bay of Lübeck ...

QUOTE
... According to documents at the Dutch Institute of War Documentation (NIOD), the government of Sweden had warned the British government that prisoners were aboard the ships ...

So what, huh? See, that's the problem we have with a trigger-happy cowboy mentality. Whoops! Did we just shoot the head off a baby girl! SORRY!!! Blama-blama-blama-blama! Subtle really isn't in your lexicon, is it?

Listen you pathetic excuse for an overvoiced ape: they did not bomb the lifeboats deliberately, that cannot be hard to understand, even for you. It's always easy to be hindsight smart, sipping tea at your computer and typing away. Once you get into the situation, you realize, you might know so much as you think, sitting here 65 years after the war with all the Truths coming to you as fast as Wikipedia can serve. Maybe the pilot didn't make out the lifeboats as such, maybe the bomber didn't know of the exact situation (the U-Boot commander's message could have and could have not been made aware to the airplane crew). Maybe, they saw a German U-Boot and wanted to send it to the bottom, because they knew that if they didn't, it'd sink another 14 thousand tons of shipping (U-507), or ~20 thousand tons (U-156).

But for you, everything's simple. There were bloodthirsty American rednecks on the plane who were aiming for the lifeboats to kill as many survivors as possible.

Sometimes I wonder whether you grew up among human beings at all.

Does not really matter now fellas it happened. The important thing is we have grown up just a little bit from this war. And I reiterate a little and yeah I come from one of the most militaristic countries in the world. I at least know or hope that I personally can go to my grave not taking the life of another.
Sin
And that's your best shot is it, Genie? Pathetic. You fail to understand anything. These failings pass through generations, as is pretty self evident by your attitude. "So what", huh? I'll deal with you further on my return on Wednesday. Goodnight.

I guess humans are basically all the same, especially in times of war. Exceptions prove the rule.

Just so we all get this into pespective! A day or two before the ship sailed 2000-3000 Jewish women I don´t know if they were German, Polish or whatever and , honestly it doesn´t matter! They were driven, on foot, when I say driven, I mean beaten. onto a beach nearby, where the SS proceeded to neck shoot them one by one! Seeing that they could not kill all of them in such a manner, the SS proceeded to force these naked women into to the sea!
The beach was 1 hour later awash with over 2000 naked corpses!
A number of Germans witnessed it, one of which, a 13 old boy now of course in his 70´s said" Das wird mich bis zu meine Lebensende verfolgen!"
Now you tell me you fucking apologists!, who was the fucking baddies here! A submarine of the Soviet Navy who attacked a fucking military target and maybe made a mistake or a regime that condoned the mass murder of innocent woman, men and children and are now saying it wasn´t our fault!
We didn´t know !
Of course they all knew, every single German citizen knew and most of them helped it to happen! Why?
I honestly don´t know! My Oma ( my former German family) was married to a SS man! She always denied it! I can recognise a uniform in a photo when I see it Oma, my former G/Fs father was a doctor in the SS, he sent Norwegian kids back to Germany for breeding purposes! The whole fucking place was a sick mess. Nobody wants an appology! Just fucking stop whining Germany, we all know it was a long time ago, so just stop trying to say " It wasn´t our fault!"
We all know the people (German) we care about are not the ones who were alive then and we do not lay any blame at your door, so just get over it! Be glad we fucked you over in the war and life is so much better now. If you had won, it would have been much, much worse!
Rant over, said too much anyway!

Was talking to a German auaintance about this last night.
"Bunch of Nazi revisionism by ZDF and 'quel surprise' " was his comment.

I think the bombing of the ship was in the orders but the life boats of course were not! However, if you would know anything about military history and how the bombs were drop you would know that the bombs are not precision guided and once you hit that button the bombs are going! You are over 10,000 feet in air looking through a looking glass that probably was made the same way a coke bottle was made from. Give them a break the war is over and has been over. German friends of mind are reminded constantly about issues that has occurred in the past history however, the one time something happened to them they are screaming about it!!! What about all the jews and all the war crimes that has happened to them? The first and fore most point is that ZDF should be the one under fire here not someone voicing there opinion. ZDF should have never shown this movie in the first place! What kind of crap is that!!!
John am Rhein
I read about this in the book 'Armageddon' by Max Hastings, last year.

The sense of enormous Russian revenge when they advanced into Prussia really comes across. I'd like to see THAT portrayed on film.
