Does anyone know if it is possible to legally bet on the Melbourne Cup at a betting shop in Germany?

For those who don't know, it is a National Tradition in Australia to have a flutter on the Melbourne Cup. I have never kept up the tradition from here in Germany, but walked into a betting shop the other day and saw that them showing some races from Ireland and wondered if they would also take bets on the Big Race on the First Tuesday in November Any other Aussies know this?

I use www.superodds.com. They are certainly currently taking ante post bets on the Melbourne Cup. You can open an credit account instantly with a credit card and pay/win in Euros. Their odds seem fair, and they cover no end of international events (even Basball, Greek Football, Australian Rules, etc) not even always sport (US and UK elections, Olympic 2012 host city). Simply open an account and make a deposit with credit card, then bet at will. Any winnings go straight to your account which can be transferred at anytime back to your credit card.

They had no issues about my German address or credit card, so I can't see any legal problems

Felt the need to revive this as the time has once again come for the big race itself.

Form guides down here in old Melbourne town suggest that the great dame herself, Makybe Diva, is this year going to start a $3.25 favourite, although this has a catch. Diva and Irish horse Vinnie Roe will not race unless the VRC water the track heavily before the race. Bowing to pressure of having two top crowd pullers backing out, the VRC has watered down Flemington, causing other horses to contemplate backing out. It will be interesting to see who actually races, and how the track puylls up, as it is warm here in Melbourne, meanig unless there is a lot of water, the track will harden.

Tips, for those who care:

Leica Falcon, paying about $6.75 for a win. Has drawn badly at 20 though.
Railings, coming off three straight wins, paying $6.- and ridden by one G. Childs.

Makybe Diva is definately a safe bet, although chances are every man and his dog will have a punt, so the odds may slip leading up to 3pm Tuesday. Vinnie Roe has drawn poorly at 24, but is in good form with a win and three placings in its last four runs. Demerger ($15.-) and Grey's Inn a couple of smokeys if the track stays relatively dead, with Gai Waterhouse's Mr. Celebrity ($21.-) at good value, although the distance may be a problem.

Enough rambling, happy punting!

Ahh the spring racing carnival...my first casual job gig was working as a TAB betting operating...loads of clueless drunken rich people...lots of cash...and drunken women with no underwear...good times!

I almost forgot the whole thing was about a bunch of tiny men holding onto their horses for dear life... tongue.gif

Does anyone know if the melbourne cup is screened on TV here at all?

For any one who is interested in the result ... The Melbourne Cup was won by two Japanese horses. 1st place went to Delta Blues and 2nd place to Pop Rock. Story here:

That time of the year again, for the $5.1m Melb Cup.

After a cracking Victoria Derby day on Saturday, where the rain held off until shortly after the final race, Melbourne's been pretty wet since, meaning that the international horses have shortened for the big dance tomorrow.

Master O'Reilly is a safe favourite, though the large field and probable dead course may cluster the field. Mahlers the best option from the UK, having won over the distance at Ascot earlier this year.

Purple Moon's another of the shorter odds, with stablemates Blue Monday and The Fuzz roughies.
