I've recently moved to Nuremberg, and am currently searching for an unfurnished apartment. Much as I hate the idea of paying an obscenely large provision on top of the security deposit, my German skills are beginner-level, so I doubt I'll get far talking directly to landlords I come across in the newspaper. Does anyone have any recommendations for English speaking estate agents in town that I can contact or look up on immobielenscout?

Matt,
I have a nasty feeling that what you are looking for doesn't exist over here. Most banks have Immobilienabteilungen that will speak enough english for you to be able to talk to them, but they all only have a small selection of the available properties and that wont necessarily stop you from being screwed by the landlord when it comes to signing the papers. About the biggest selection will be at the SAparkasse, but even then branches will tend only to have falts in their local area.
The best solution would be - Find someone here who speaks good German and has the time to help you sort through the newspaper ads and negociate with the landlord when youve made a pre-selection.
There are people like outplacement agents around who would do what I think you want them to do, but youd be paying them and then the agents fees and deposit on top.
I can help with anything that can be dealt with by email but I dont have any time to help more intensively, sorry.

Hi
If you don´t know anyone that speaks german, you can always use the google language translation program (simply copy & paste german text to english) it helped me alot to find an apartment´s details at least!
But...good luck, it took us 2 months to find an "ok" apartment - problem is that most agencies / private sellers advertise now for apartments available in 3 months time.
I do know of an aprtment that is free in maximillian (we were offered it but did´t take it as we just found something else) if you want i can forward her details...??

I decided to send out four queries in English, which lead to a makler who spoke decent English and didn't mind leading me through the application, which lead to my getting the perfect apartment the day after applying. I'm amazed that it was easier to rent here than it is in the US,
Congrats!
Btw, how much did he charge?

Thanks! The provision is 2 nettomiete + VAT, so around 1100. 1100 too much, of course, but hey.
