I noticed one of my neighbours has got a
Thor Steinar logo on the back of his car. It looked a bit dodgy so I checked out Thor Steinar on the web. Thor Steinar is a clothing label. It seems there has been some controversy about Thor Steinar and the right wing scene.
The guy, who's car it is, seems normally enough. (ie normal hair, clothes, no mustache and a funny walk) and says hello without raising his arm. Anyone know much about Thor Steinar? Should I give this guy a wide berth?

What type of car is it? I've found that BMWs with tinted windows and extra body kit tend to be somewhat of a neo-nazi vehicle of choice. Amongst the younger generation anyway.

Green VW polo. Bear in mind we're not in such a affluent area.

Like I said he looks fairly normal. I haven't really taken much notice of his clothes. Much in the same way, I don't notice the housekeepers clothes.

The answer is yes. At best, he's a nationalist. There isn't just "some controversy" about Thor Steinar clothes. Their original design is illegal in Berlin (it was a poorly disguised swastika). There was a 400-strong protest in Mitte last week because a new Tonsberg Thor Steinar store opened on Rosa Luxemburg Strasse - the landlord is now kicking them out. The Norwegian government is also suing the company to keep them from using the Norwegian flag as part of their logo (this is apparently illegal in Europe).
This is a very poor article, obviously written by someone of questionable political beliefs, but you'll get the drift:

If not then I would not worry too much!

I'm not asking if you've done a commando mission in the middle of the night to check his clothing labels! Just if you've noticed the giant LONSDALE across his chest. Obviously not.
So he's either extremely slow and doesn't understand the message conveyed by his conspicuous consumption, or he's a supporter. Either way, not really someone you should target for friendship.

Yep, I read that wiki link when I did my first search on Thor Steinar. A bit worrying to say the least. Just reading reading your new link...

I once asked a guy wearing Lonsdale if he was a Rechtsextremist and he claimed for him it had nothing political but was purely about boxing. Was he taking the easy way out and denying his political leanings, or does it not always mean neo-Nazi?

Fred Perry polo shirts are also associated with this kind of stuff. As long as he isn't breaking the law, just live and let live.

I don't think I'd buy a car that had a Bush Cheney sticker on it. And if I HAD to, it'd be the first alteration.

Buying Thor Steinar clothing without being aware that it's a popular extreme-right brand is possible. But putting a sticker on your car?
Leaving Berlin due to problems with racism's another TT post on Steinar
Edit: If he's really not aware of what it means, he's probably wondering why his car keeps getting keyed by anti-nazis!

Ive heard that some of them wear New Balance trainers because the initials NB can with a little imagination be considered to stand for "Nationale Bewegung"!

Live and let live, sure, but it is good to be able to pigeon-hole people early on sometimes. I met a girl at work I really liked, we hung out, became friends, were close, and then out of the blue a conversation came up about Ausländer and it turns out she is totally racist (even though she herself is a "desirable" one). Came as quite a shock, and was very sad to me because I couldn't continue to be friends with her, but didn't explain it to her, and I do miss the nice things about her. Still, I can't be close to someone who thinks like that.

@ rick_de: True, and New Balance launched various campaigns a few years ago to try and shake off the image, including IIRC sponsoring panel discussions about right-wing extremism and how to fight it - with the idea of getting themselves a new commie pinko image that would repel the neo-Nazis.

I've never really understood why people feel that some forms of violence should be tolerated, while others shouldn't...

a ) I'm not sure that keying a car constitutes violence. Destruction, yes. Violence is a bit more, though, IMO.
b ) Is there a government on this planet that doesn't condone violence in some situations?
c ) I cannot recall seeing anti-fascists in anything other than peaceful demonstration. I just have this image of a guy who, thinking a sticker looks cool, puts it on his car and then wonders why his wing mirrors get knocked off so regularly.

seen demonstrating against nazis were doing so peacefully.

Well i have actually never seen a skin with Lonsdales on, the brand is probably not exclusive enough any more ( In October
EDEKA sold Lonsdale hods for 12,99 ) And i think my St Pauli T-shirt will put them off...
Well most of "antifa" demonstrations i have seen, seems to end up in smashed shop windows and cars

Personally I don't see anything wrong with kicking a Nazi in the goolies.
Update :
My neighbour has now added this next to the Thor Steinar sticker...

Presumably only blonde and blue-eyed children.
