Does anyone know if I can get large-scale, detailed maps of Germany equivalent to the excellent Ordnance Survey Explorer maps available in the UK. So far my efforts have failed and I haven't been able to find anything so detailed.
Uncle Nick
Have you tried google maps?

Thanks for replying but these don't show the detail I'm looking for, eg footpaths and contour lines
Uncle Nick
There are plenty of maps showing "Wanderwege" (walking routes) and cycle paths if that's any help.

Wanderkarte (go to Kartenbeispiel) is what you seem to be looking for. Ask in good bookstores. Where in Germany are you? Biazza in Munich is highly recommended, especially the store in Oettingenstrasse. I got very detailed hiking maps from them last year, mostly for the Bavarian/Austrian alps around Bayrischzell and Spitzingsee.

Google for "Vermessungsamt" or "Landesvermessungsamt". Every Bundesland should have one. For Bayern you find that kind of maps here.
Try the "Bayernviewer" online for free.

Bernt and Freytag at Karlspl 6 (I think) have a great selection of maps, picked of a few of the areas around Munich which I use for planning hash house harriers runs.

Try GEO at Viktualenmarkt! Near the Tchibo I think it is!

Firstly, Google Maps are to cartography what children's bicycles are to space exploration – i.e. a useless embarrassment.

That bit covered, if you want online maps then the Bayern Viewer, as suggested by Freising, is the way to go for topographical maps.

For printed maps, you need the products of the Bayerische Landesvermessungsamt. These are available in 1:25,000 (TP25 series) or 1:50,000 (TP50 series) scale, although tend to cover only a smallish area. From their homepage, click on the "Topographische Karten" link under "Freizeit".

For the Alps, the Bayerische Landesvermessungsamt also produce 1:50,000 topographical maps (UK series) that cover a larger area than their TK maps. Alternatively, some areas are also covered by the Alpenverein maps, which are also good.

Bear in mind that Ordnance Survey remains unrivalled in terms of quality, so you will have to adjust. Avoid all maps apart from those from the Landesvermessungsamte and the Alpenverein – a few minutes spent perusing a Kompass map, for example, will soon have you either laughing or crying.

If you're not in Bavaria then you will have to check out the products of your local Landesvermessungsamt. Unlike in the UK, mapping is undertaken regionally here.

Listen to STB on this.
Kompass maps, for example, may look cool with all the contour lines and marking of wayside crucifixes, but I don't find the details accurate. I don't laugh or cry, I rant at them.
