"The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai
Purple Muffin
Hi everyone,

Ok so we have chosen a book by fair play or foul. The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai here are the reviews from Amazon:

QUOTE
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This stunning second novel from Desai (Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard) is set in mid-1980s India, on the cusp of the Nepalese movement for an independent state. Jemubhai Popatlal, a retired Cambridge-educated judge, lives in Kalimpong, at the foot of the Himalayas, with his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, and his cook. The makeshift family's neighbors include a coterie of Anglophiles who might be savvy readers of V.S. Naipaul but who are, perhaps, less aware of how fragile their own social standing is—at least until a surge of unrest disturbs the region. Jemubhai, with his hunting rifles and English biscuits, becomes an obvious target. Besides threatening their very lives, the revolution also stymies the fledgling romance between 16-year-old Sai and her Nepalese tutor, Gyan. The cook's son, Biju, meanwhile, lives miserably as an illegal alien in New York. All of these characters struggle with their cultural identity and the forces of modernization while trying to maintain their emotional connection to one another. In this alternately comical and contemplative novel, Desai deftly shuttles between first and third worlds, illuminating the pain of exile, the ambiguities of post-colonialism and the blinding desire for a "better life," when one person's wealth means another's poverty.

From The New Yorker
Desai's second novel is set in the nineteen-eighties in the northeast corner of India, where the borders of several Himalayan states—Bhutan and Sikkim, Nepal and Tibet—meet. At the head of the novel's teeming cast is Jemubhai Patel, a Cambridge-educated judge who has retired from serving a country he finds "too messy for justice." He lives in an isolated house with his cook, his orphaned seventeen-year-old granddaughter, and a red setter, whose company Jemubhai prefers to that of human beings. The tranquillity of his existence is contrasted with the life of the cook's son, working in grimy Manhattan restaurants, and with his granddaughter's affair with a Nepali tutor involved in an insurgency that irrevocably alters Jemubhai's life. Briskly paced and sumptuously written, the novel ponders questions of nationhood, modernity, and class, in ways both moving and revelatory.

So now we just need a date. Is there a preference over the Easter period? I think Tuesday 18th or 26th work quite well but am pretty flexible at the moment so could go with the majority. Only dates I cannot do are 27th/28th. Post you preference here.

Also new people are always welcome biggrin.gif

Hi - I am looking forward to starting this book. I would prefer to meet after Easter on the 26th but could make the 18th as well.
j-m
I have this book and would be interested in joining you next time. The 18th would work better for me as I think I am holiday the following week but if I can't make it then hopefully I will be able to next time!
Purple Muffin
OK well I am away as of today for 10 days not sure how much I'll be able to get online but when I get back perhaps we'll have more suggestions on a date and can fix either 18th or 26th. Either is fine for me.
chucha
18th and 26th are both good for me.
macone
Hi-never been to your evenings before but would like to come along. Is this book available in town or just via Amazon?

thanks
Purple Muffin
I am not 100% certain but you could probably find it in Hugendubel
macone
fair enough will try and get my hands on a copy, any closure on dates / locations?
Purple Muffin
I was going to see what other people preffered on the dates before a decision. But I guess 26th might be better to give people time to read the book. Will confirm this when I get back from my holiday on Monday.

As for location think we agreed on my place again so any new people just send me a message and I'll give you the address details.
Evanna
I'll be out of town from the 18th to the end of March, but will try to join you again next time. Have fun!
chucha
I just started reading the book, and I also think that 26th will be better. It's very interesting, but it's not such a fast read as "The incident of a dog".

Hi!
Our move was not as smooth as planned, so I missed the meet last month...
Would love to join you this month... 26th would be best for me, too. smile.gif
Purple Muffin
Ok 26th it is then biggrin.gif
chucha
I probably won't be online until the 26th, so I agree with whatever you decide about the exact time and place.

Hope to see you all in a week.

Hi all,

Well I have just learned from my boss that I need to entertain some colleagues from Russia tomorrow night and I cannot really get out of it since the bonus salary rises for 2008 have not yet been determined I'd rather not do anything that might go against me.

So I won't be able to hold it at my place but that doesn't matter I think instead of postponing why not meet in a cafe somewhere?
macone
i will not have the book finished by tom night so i have no objections to postponement...i will come along anyways if it goes ahead...???
Purple Muffin
Ok I'll messsage the others and tell them to reply to the thread as to whether to go ahead or postpone ...
PMR2006
HI All- I am fine with either meeting tommorow night as planed or posponing 'til next Monday. Unfortunately I am not very far along in the book. A V E R Y S L O W R E A D for me:(. If people still want to meet, I'd suggest meeting in Bockenheim at Cafe Extrablatt (U Bahn Stop U4 or U6/7 in front of cafe). Since there is a break now over Easter, I think the cafe will be relatively quiet. Let me know what you guys think.
PMR2006
Hi- I am not sure if I will be online again before tonight. Since I haven't seen any further responses to the thread, I presume that the book club meeting will be postponed. If a group does decide to meet tonight, please post a thread so that I know the meeting next week is not happening. Thanks.
Purple Muffin
Yes if anybody does meet please post on here so that we all know. Otherwise I am also happy to postpone to next week.
chucha
Let's postpone, Monday next week is fine with me.
Purple Muffin
Ok I have altered the title to Monday 31st. I will be offline today as of lunchtime until Monday.

If we do Monday I cannot make it until 8pm I hope this is ok for everyone oh and we can either meet at my place or in cafe extra blatt (or somewhere else if people prefer...)

Chucha, macone and PMR2006 all have my address so contact one of them in my absence if you need to know where it is.
Buttercup
LOL - I'm so glad it's postponed... I've read all of 5 pages (I have no concentration span atm!!!)
If I get to at least 10 pages, I'll come along! wink.gif
Purple Muffin
I am not too far either 200 pages so far so don't worry
chucha
I finished it, so I can tell you how it ends tonight wink.gif
macone
sorry guys-will not make it tonight, I am almost finished the book though and would be interested in your opinions after you have had a chance to discuss tonight??? Please let me know what the next book is as well??

have fun
Purple Muffin
We have not chosen a book for next time yet - any suggestions? Mine is Chocolat by Joanne Harris.
