DW World: Aftershocks Hit Germany's Coal Mining Industry

Bad news for Saarland I am afraid! Coal mining has apparently caused a light earthquake (4.0 on richter) near Saarlouis on the French/German/Luxembourg border. Quite a bit of damage to buildings with a 1000 people protesting in town square to end mining once and for all. 3600 workers laid off already is what was the old West Germany's poorest state. The knock on affect will be immense to the surrounding area! Shame

Coal mining has wrecked many areas due both to subsidence & the spoil tips. Not only in Germany - also in many areas of UK...

In Germany mining has taken place under the Rhine river causing subsidence and requiring significant funds to raise dykes etc. Some time ago I saw a sequence of photos on TV showing how a Gasthof had been well above the river level sank (along with the land) by many a metre...
