Hi everyone

I`d be grateful for any help.
A mean thing happened today at the bilingual kindergarden where I work; mine, and my German colleague`s handbags were stolen by a thief who`d sneaked in and taken them out of our lockers. Well, it certainly wasn`t worth the effort he`d made, às the two of us didn`t have much on us cashwise.

Thing is though, my passport was in my bag and I`m not sure what to do about getting a new one unsure.gif
I´ve been to the British consulate`s website and have printed out the LSO1 form which I`ll fax.
My question, do I have to get a whole new passport ( definitely not a bargain at 170€ )?
Another problem, I need it in about 4 weeks time to go to Mallorca...would it be here on time?

As you see, I have a real dilemma here, and I`d be extremely thankful for any help, tips, whatsoever biggrin.gif

Thanks a lot in advance!
Kim

There is a POSSIBILITY that your passport may get dumped by the thief and you get it back via the police or the consulate in Düsselfdorf.
Make sure they know where you live, fax or e mail them that it is missing.

You are supposed to always pocess valid ID in Germany.
I'd give it a couple of weeks in case it tunrs up and if not, then apply for a new one.

Becasue losing a British Passport is a ärgerlich and VERY expensive business, no Britons I know ever carry it around unless they really need to and then keep it in VERY close supervision.

was talking to someone last night who works at the Consulate here and she said that they have to DESTROY any passports handed in to them after 24 hours.

I can't offer any direct advice or opinion on getting an replacement British passport within that time, but I can tell you that I once got a temporary Irish passport within a couple of days after my original was lost. That said, you shouldn't have a problem anyway if you have some form of ID given that Mallorca would fall under the Schengen umbrella. If you need an urgent replacement, four weeks should be absolutely plenty of time.

Been there, done that - mid-December when I though I had lost my passport, licenses & credit cards on last leg of return from USA.
In fact someone (must have been my dear wife) had taken it from where I had taken out of jacket on arriving home & put in my my son's desk
Turned up 3 weeks later but the damage was done...

Yes you need a full one - and since its been stolen/lost you need to supply extra documentation (like original birth certificate)...
Luckily as mine turned up (after cancelling) I was able to send it in with application & all went through in just over a week.

I honestly doubt it. It will take you some time to get new photos, birth cert etc together & then they take longer to process a lost/stolen passport.
If you fly Germany-Spain there is no passport control but you may well need your passport when checking in for flights & your hotel in Spain is likely to ask for it.

You need to cancel your passport. From the British Embassy website:

QUOTE
If your passport has been lost or stolen it is important that you inform us without delay. This will reduce the risk of someone stealing your identity or attempting to enter the UK on your passport.
...
Once you report your passport as lost or stolen the passport is electronically cancelled and you are not able to use it as legal proof of identity, nationality or for any other legal purpose. You must not use it to travel.

You'll find all the info about getting a replacement on the same site. This is what they say about timing for normal cases:

QUOTE
We have a Citizen's Charter requirement to process correctly submitted passport applications within 10 working days once we have received the appropriate fee. We will do our very best to meet this requirement but strongly advise that you allow 4 weeks for your application to be processed.

I applied for my last one at a point where I had slightly under 4 weeks until my next trip, so called them to check - they were very helpful and said they could speed up the process if need be, but it actually turned out to be in the post by then anyway - only took a couple of weeks in total. They also gave me the passport number over the phone in advance. Obviously your case is more complicated though, so I'd certainly recommend calling them to explain the situation.

Good luck!

If you call and explain about your travel plans they may be able to expedite it. You'll probably have to take the forms/photos etc to the consulate yourself and make sure everything's in order.

But they are pretty helpful in Düsseldorf - and it's not the busiest time of the year.

When my passport went walkabout I went to the consulate in Duesseldorf and thay issued me with a new one there and then.

Thanks everyone for your help smile.gif

I guess I`ll just have to pop down to the consulate on Monday and apply for a new passport, don`t suppose I`ll be lucky in that my old one will turn up again sad.gif

Cheers

i have just renewed the wifes and we got it back within 6 working days.€ 175 is expensive but was impressed with the speed they did it at.Also got to think about it E.U. memebers can only reside in the host country with a valid passport.

I got similar performance with a renewal. BUT in case of a lost/stolen passport it take LONGER (as I stated in post #6).
You also need additional identification (original birth cert).

Given that you are in Cologne and that passports are issued by the consulate in Düsseldorf you can probably get a replacement very quickly if you apply personally. You can get "emergency" passports, although these are intended to get you home, rather than to travel to a third country. Given that both Germany and Spain are in the Schengen area you don't actually need passport to travel between them, but unless you have other accepted ID (e.g. for flight check in) you may have problems travelling. Were you German, then your identity card would suffice, but so long as Britain resists offering this document to its citizens your passport is your only alternative.

YL6, I didn't think the UK was going to issue ID cards to non-residents IF they ever come to pass.
And I've yet to see a convincing clear cut argument that they could be used as an identity card as Germans use theire becasue of the UK governments intention to use them for other purposes eg accessing health care.
