Unusual restaurants in Munich

Anyone know of anywhere really different?

Hello people,

I've been browsing through the TT list of restaurants in Munich and their associated reviews on TT in an attempt to track down some really different eating experiences. I'm an adventurous eater, so I'm looking for stuff that's a bit off the beaten track!

I've tried the Blue Nile and Lemar (both highly recommended!) and various other more unusual places which are listed - I'm just wondering if anyone's stumbled on anything interesting/new that hasn't been listed so far.

Anyone know of any (thinking of random examples off the top of my head) Nepalese, Egyptian, South African, Norwegian, Brasilian etc. etc. ???

Cheers!

Mongos

Mongolian restaurant. Nice decor, fantastic food, a bit pricey. Interesting concept, you basically build your own dishes and tell them which type of sauce you want. they cook it all fresh ad bring it to you table. The ingredients are always fresh. I recommend th all-you-can-eat option which really allows you toexperimen. try awhole bunch of different combinations with different sauces to really please your palate.

What about the medieval restaurant in odeonsplatz? I've never been there. is it worth the money they ask for?

It's superb for a company party or a birthday, but definitely not the sort of place I'd visit very often. The food and drink are good, and the entertainment is great (my parents loved it when I took them there for my father's birthday). But it really is damn expensive (although admittedly it includes a full evening of entertainment - you arrive at the start and stay until the end, it's not like a normal restaurant where people come and go throughout the evening).

Another place that might be worth checking out is Dining in the Dark. I've never been there myself, but one of these days I'll organise a visit.

I'll have to check out Mongos as well. I love Mongolian restaurants, and spent ages trying to find one in Munich, but without any success.

Yes, it's a great thing to do with a large group. Lots of fun, serving wenches and all... smile.gif

Our company had a do-dah at the medieval restaurant. I hated it. I was bored. There was a magican doing the "take your watch and stick it in a bag and bang on it until it's in pieces and then hand you your perfectly ticking watch again" dry.gif trick. And you were only allowed to eat with a knife, by poking at your food. ohmy.gif The food was okay. I just thought that it was one of those forced-to-have-fun-events. I guess, I am the only one that isnt thrilled with place. unsure.gif

No, I didn't think much to it either and in the group of people I went with, the women didn't think much of having to pour the mens beer etc. which they said was part of the "fun".

I can highly recommend this, having organized two dinners there last year. The Vinorant Alter Hof is staging these dinners Tuesday through Saturday until the beginning of July; you not only get delicious food, there is also an aperitif with an explanation of what to expect, and you are entertained between the courses. The first time a blind student of History and German literature read Ephraim Kishon short stories, the second time a medieval bard amused us with stories and recorder music.

The Japanese restaurant Daitokai is nice, too. They do Teppanyaki, meaning you watch the cook preparing your food on a hot plate in the middle of the table. (It's not like a mongolian barbecue where you fill your own bowl and have it cooked.) They also have Sushi and Tempura.

The big pub in Moosinning boast to doing the biggest schnitzels around.Done it and believe me they are massive.

@taiwanbabies

When were you there? I googled Daitokai and one link says it was closed in 2004. Did they open somewhere else afterwards?

Some interesting propositions so far... thanks! smile.gif

I'm doing some offline restaurant sleuthing too - so far I've heard about a couple of Nepalese restaurants:
Nepali Bhansha Ghar (apparently near Stachus) and the Himalayan Food House in Blutenburgstr.

Has anyone been to either of these? And if so, what are they like?

You can look at restaurants by cuisine types on Toytown under 'Bars and Restaurants', so if you want something different like Brazilian etc, check out the listing there! Alternatively, search for those words in the chat forum.

I can think of 2 Brazilian restaurants off the top of my head which serve Rodizio, I'm sure they're on TT already (Luitpoldpark's Bamberger Haus La Villa and one just on Leopoldstrasse).

Yeah, I've checked the listings on TT - it took quite a while to trawl through them all!

The main reason for me starting this thread is that I know sometimes people know of/discover absolute gems, but don't quite get round to posting details... I'm a bit guilty of that too, I know. I will get round to posting details and a review of my favourite Sunday brunch spot at some point, honest... (it's not listed on TT so far)

Oh really??? Oops. I was there around 2004 or so - can't remember. But when I googled it briefly, I saw a picture of the Frauenkirche on their website and was assuming it was still there (in Munich). Sorry if not sad.gif

Himalayan Food House in Blutenburgstr.

This place is good and often busy - Neuhausen has a surprisingly vibrant Buddhist community including Budda Haus, hence...

Also in Neuhausen, if you fancy spending (a lot) more for something really special: Acetaia
Michelin-starred, based around balsamic vinegars, beautiful food and a wonderful experience.
