Hi all!
I’m a producer for Pro7 and am currently working on a 15-minute segment for the show “Galileo. The segment will be aired on March 13th, so I’m a little pressed for time.
We’ll be staging the ultimate show-down between the Italian, American and German recipes for pizza. And we’re looking for an American cook – either professional or amateur – who would be willing to come to Munich and cook a classic American pizza for us on camera. He or she would have to give a running commentary on how to make the pizza, which ingredients are best, etc. At the end of the segment, a group of German university students will conduct a taste test.
The shoot will start around 8 am and continue through 5 pm maximum and is scheduled for the end of next week (27th/28th/29th of February). My guess is that we’ll be finished much earlier. We’d cover all travel expenses, of course, as well as an overnight stay if desired. We can also offer a small monetary compensation, about € 100 for the day.
If you would like to participate, or know someone who would, please give me a call! Or write me an email.
katja.holtkoetter@maximusfilm.de, Tel. 089/255448013
Thanks for your help!

Who is the TT resident chef? Step up! Whoever it is better do a Chicago style pizza for the win

For me the placing is obvious: 1. American 2. German 3. Italian. There are some good pizzas in Germany but nothing like some of the great pies I've gotten around Chicago.

Where's the DON! ?!?!
Seriously, our don riinia on german tv! Classic!!

Pfft. She just said it'd be Germans doing the taste test.

But that's a valid consideration -- Chicago-style deep dish or California thin or something else entirely? Oh and Don's a Brit DD, you forgot that?

Yes, I did forget that in my enthusiasm to see him cook on german tv...
Oh well, anyone else?

The taste-testers are all German, that's true - but they'reAbiturienten studying either English, German or Italian. We're trying to make it as fair as possible, people.

By the way, in case any of you know a German or Italian chef and/or foodie... Fork him or her over. We just starting swinging this thing yesterday evening, and could use all the help we can get.

Well, if you are still working in it, why not throw in a brit? Just a thought ... I would even drive him there personally just to see him on tv.

Get BadDoggie on the case. I used to run a pizzeria, but would not claim to be an expert on the different styles of American pizza.
@DDBug - don't worry, I've relocated a cameraman I thought I'd lost. DonRiina TV is in the pipeline...

Dunno, you'd have to check the Michelin guide for the last few years and see. I might do the same myself and check out how many stars were awarded for "currywurst mit pommes", or the classic sauerbraten served with...yep, pickled red cabbage. Pickled flavour accompanied by pickled flavour. Absolute culinary genius.

obligatory winking smiley to serve as a talisman intended to ward off the hordes of TT idiots with their tiresome "if you don't like it, why are you here" shite)

Oh reminds me I actualy had an allergic reation to sauerkraut on Sunday, I kid you not, ask the wife. I'm making pies and mash and mushy peas to balance out my system this weekend while watching the rugby. Is God telling me something?

I was gonna ask the obvious "what is American-style pizza?" question. But then it hit me...what the heck is German style pizza?

Already on it, sent an E-Mail. I also ran a pizzeria in the US. It'd be a lot more fun with the two of us together though. I can see Galileo filming us fighting over the dough hook and proper speed, all the while calling each other daft cunts and teaching the Germans a lot more English than they were expecting to learn.
To make sure my pizza wins I'm thinking of using currywurst slices and spätzle as toppings.
woof.

Somebody please save and u/l the segment for posterity! Only 15 minutes, so there's lots of online websites that can provide free hosting.
Then we can have a nice long thread afterwards with reviews and critiques, and folks can post their favourite pizza recipes

Thanks to everyone for your interest & support. We've found a cook for the American pizza.
Still sorely lacking on the Italian/German front. And glad of any help. You're a resourceful bunch.
Thanks again and have a good one
Katja
So did BadDoggie get the job? That'll be a great show, if so. Can't wait to see it.
I think for fairness actually there should be Americans testing and Italians too. Brits as well if the Don gets in on the act. I volunteer.

Well tonight Galileo is showing a German and Italian? and someone I couldn't understand because the kids were yapping baking pizza. The German girl is making a curry wurst pizza - I kid you not.
They are just now showing the dough being made, if anyone is interested.
EDIT - it' even worse than that, they are making frozen pizzas, and then making one with noodles one with curry wurst and one with whatever I didn't hear (but the guy is greek, your guess is as good as mine) according to frozen pizza recipes. *gag*

Feb 25 2008, 7:52 pm
Good thing that I have no time for this mess. With a German audience the frigging curry wurst pizza will win. I mean they still think Americans put corn on pizza and tuna fish pizza is actually loved in the real American world.
DDBug
Feb 25 2008, 7:58 pm
Well, they didn't pick a winner, they just made the pizzas for them and made them eat them. The German girl loved the curry wurst pizza, the italian guy liked his noodle pizza and the greek guy said the only thing missing from his gyros pizza was salad.

Feb 25 2008, 8:46 pm
And the American said the only thing missing was real pizza and a pitcher of beer.

Actually, the show you watched the other day wasn't the one the OP was talking about.
Guess who baked the American pizza? Make that FIVE pizzas!
It was a hoot. Great people to work with.
You can see the show on March 13 - though that's not a firm guarantee. They tell me it might be a day or two later, depending on last-minute scheduling.

They said it is about 95% certain that it will run on March 13, but that sometimes programming changes are made a couple of hours before, so no absolute guarantee it won't be pushed back a day or so.

Mar 12 2008, 2:20 pm
And as it turns out, it has been pushed back one day: Friday, March 14 at 1910 on Pro7. The producer says the pizza segment should be on around 2000 in the same show. For a look at how the shoot went, you can read about it

I wanna see it too! But aren't you Canadian? According to your profile you are! Why did they pick a Canadian when they asked for an American? Did they say on the show where you are from?
Edit: Nevermind, read (and commented on) your blog, and the link you posted to the other blog where it says they passed you off as an American.
