We'll be travelling through Germany (Austria and Switzerland too!) and I cannot eat Gluten...
How do I ask in German for this? I also can't eat MSG (flavour enhancers)...
Can anyone help out? :)
Of course, if you know how to say it in French too, that'd be awesome!
Does anyone know any foods (other than obvious things, like Bread, etc) that I should steer clear of that otherwise look fine?
Cheers,
Aaron

Request for the Chef
When going to a restaurant you should (like almost everythere in the world) talk to the staff.
The waiter can bring the following text to the chef in the kitchen:
Vielen Dank!
English
Since I suffer from an inability to digest proteins derived from cereals (rye, wheat, barley, oats), I cannot eat dishes containing flour, breadcrumbs, semolina, pasta, etc.
If any of these ingredients are contained in the meal I have chosen and it is not possible to leave them out, could you please offer me an alternative dish.
Thank you very much!

I can eat gluten, but have an intolerence to wheat. I have actually found the bread here to be really good for me. I eat dinkel rolls which are really yummy and do not make me sick at all. I'm not sure what they have that is gluten free, but it might be worth asking.

they have a lot of "roggen" (rye) and "dinkel" (spelt) bread over here, these are great alternatives to wheat and can be bought in pretty much any bakery.
Also - on a side note for the lactose intolerant people out there, there is a great range called "Minus L" which does great cream cheese, emmental, gouda, mozarella, camembert, quark, cream - pretty much everything and are actually normal dairy products, just minus the lactose, not soya or rice based.
website is in German, but here it is:

A bit off-topic but I ordered gluten-free beer & crisps/pretzels etc for my brother-in-law last Christmas. He said that they were all better than the UK equivalents - service also very good from the company itself and the goods arrived 36 hours later.
As he has visited quite often, he tells me that many packets of potato chips are 'suspect' because of the flavourings uses - sorry I do not know the full story as to why.
