Hi, I am new in Frankfurt and was considering bar work for a few months whilst I get myself settled in. What sort of hourly wage can I expect in a country which has no stipulated minimum wage?
I know Germany isnt a country mad about tipping, so I assume unless you work in a wealthy area or a more exclusive venue the tips would not be too high either.
Any ideas/ suggestions? The sort of place Im thinking of is your typical run-of-the-mill gastro pub...
Cheers!

From what I have heard from some bar staff, their tips can outweight their basic pay on more nights than not. O'Reillys is always looking for staff (bloody needs them aswell).

Ok well I worked in a bar in Bremen about 9 years ago and I was told I was pretty well paid at 12DM an hour. For some reason I have 8€ an hour in my head.

But yes what Nick says is right if you are nice and friendly and work in the right bar you will make more than a nights wages in tips. I generally used to.

Most bars nowadays tend to figure commission into the wage, meaning depending on the frequency of the day, you might get stuck with something veeery low...

Iirc a ballpark figure of 8 euro, as Purple Muffin said, is pretty much the standard. Basic pay be considerably lower (5? 6?) if commission figures in additionally.
