Hello all,
So I have cross threaded a screw, and I want to explain this fact to the dealer where I'll be taking my now imperfect motorcycle for fixing. What phrase is used in German for this term? Using my bad German I was going to cobble together a sentence like: "die Schraube ist schief gegangen" (or "die Schraube wird schief gegangen sein"?) but I wanted to see if there is an actual term for this.
For those who don't know what I mean in English: Cross threading a screw is when you don't line up the threads correctly, and screw in a screw at a slight angle. The threads don't line up correctly, so it becomes more difficult to turn... but if one has ample helpings of force and stupidity, one can continue to crank the screw until it can not be easily removed.

I would say the screw, schraube, is verkantet, I think. Ich habe der schraube verkant eingeschraubt.

Die Schraube hat sich beim Einschrauben verkantet.
Allershausen blames you, and Hammonia blames the screw.

I think I would go with what Hammonia suggested.
And Allershausen's sentence should be "Ich habe die Schraube verkantet eingeschraubt", gramatically, however the other version sounds better to me.

Allershausen: A screw may look male. However, in German it's female "die Schraube". I hope it doesn't drive you nuts.

I think you have mistaken me for someone who gives a shit! All this der die das nonsense has been thrown in the bin as far as I'm concerned. I guarantee you that should the OP go into the workshop and use my phrase, the meister would not even bat an eyelid, but would get on with trying to fix the problem.

Allershausen blames you, and Hammonia blames the screw.
That is the difference between the Brits & the Germans...

Yeah, a German would
never say an Englishman made a mistake - it must have been the material
