I say absolutely. Just say when and where.

The latter part of the week is usually best for me

I think there´s a pub quiz in Thursty Nelly´s here on Wed. I´m not sure if the other irish pub - harp - has one too, but i´ll check tomorrow.
@Turasteanga and AshleyM - any chance you´ll be interested in coming down to these parts as well?

Hey there,
it's either feast or famine here. We're a lot on this week already but I will ask the other half if he want to take a wander this to Kaiserslautern this week. If not this week, maybe next week. Would love an oul pub quiz.
I'll be back! t

If this turns into a pub quiz I may just show up. I've been trying to impart the atmosphere of a pub quiz to my Weib for G. knows how long.

Feb 19 2008, 5:32 pm
Hi there,
just coming back...I misread the first mail about the quiz and thought it was on Thursday which would have suited. But it's on Wednesday instead. So this week is out as it's someone's birthday, friend of hubby.
But if you guys don't make it this week, then maybe next week would be a runner.
@Tom, was at a couple of pub quizzes here already in DE. Not sure if the atmosphere is all the same here. But then I was in a pub full of crafty and very serious Germans who apparently were using their mobiles to text people for help! As I say, it was different!
cheers y'all!

I must say I have never been to a pub quiz. It sounds like loads of fun, and I have been wanting to get to the one in Mannheim!
If they text for help, isn't that cheating?
Sadly enough, my nights out are limited to weekends with the occasional rare weeknight! ( I need my beauty sleep, I have to go to bed by 9 on weeknights!

)

Guys, the pub quiz is on Weds. in Thursty Nelly's which means Turas and Ashley are likely out, on account of a conflicting appointment and the need for beauty sleep. Couldn't yet check with Harp.
But it appears we have two *newcomers* - Bohemka and Tom. So we could just make it a good ol' fashioned meet-up this friday evening? Wot say?

Question. Is The Statt Wien resturant still in K-Town ? It's Been a long time since I have been there. Like about 40 years or better . Used to have a great time there. Also is there still a A&W Root Beer Drive in on Pariser strasse on the way out to Vogelweh.
I used to work there when it first opened . Man this brings back memories.
1tennisplyr
Feb 20 2008, 12:35 am
@nnwhitestallion --> Dunno about either place but I'd say they're long gone

A colleague of mine mentioned that KL received a massive facelift just before the soccer world cup 2 years back, and a couple of times before that too.
The only place in town to get A&W root beer these days is in the Vogelweh residential
area... and non-military aren't allowed in there since 9/11.

Well Chairman, I for one think Friday night would be better alright. Then everyone can relax knowing the weekend is nigh. It will have to be Friday night for me, I have a serious amount of Rugby to follow on Saturday
@ Ashley Pub quizzes can be great fun and yes, mobile texting and out of character with friendly pub quizzes. IMHO.
Anybody else on for Friday, other than our Chairman

Shall we say 7:30pm? I'll post the

Oh, and I prefer to be called "Dear leader" a la Kim Jong Il...

Ah Dear Leader..
It is quite possible that we may make it out and about Friday evening!
A definate maybe.
Just post the address and if "we" can make it "we" will, or if I can make it on my own I will!
How fabulous that we have a couple more people here in the RP!
p.s. Dear Leader, we will still have to discuss those dancing lessons!

This is my kind of planning. Wednesday's done, so... yeah... Friday it is!
We'd love to join you guys. Me + at least one, maybe + three. Hell, maybe plus four.
I hope those kind of numbers aren't intimidating.

Bravissimo! For a moment there I feared I'd have to postpone the event for lack of a reply... good to know the minions haven't let their dear leader down
So here's the plan:
---------------------
We'll meet up at Steps im Westbahnhof (a.k.a Step's) @ 7:30pm. Here's a
MAP of the location, and here's their
website.
As before, just click the location on the map to get directions.
There's plenty of parking there and just down the street, so parking shouldn't be an issue. There's supposed to be some live music tomorrow from 8:30pm or so... I don't know if they collect a cover from the patrons.
@Bohemka --> the more the merrier.
@Ashley --> I'm all ears about the dancing lessons...

See y'all tomorrow. PM me for my cellphone, and call me if you have problems getting there. I'll try to get there a bit early and see if I can reserve a table for us.
turasteanga
Feb 21 2008, 11:04 pm
Sounds gut! Just checking the map, excellent work again Dear Leader!
We may be a little bit later as we have to leave around 18:00 to make it there for that time, so forewarned is forearmed or summat

Bis then!

@bohemka --> I got your PM. I think it used to be the old train station.. I was told there's still a train line nearby and probably a new station just down the road.
If you're coming from KL, then the best way to get there is to take the bus (105 or 107) from the Rathaus and alight at the Kammgarn stop. To check whether you have a bus from your location in KL, just check up the Deutsche Bahn website, with "Kammgarn, Kaiserslautern" as your destination.

A good time. Thanks for getting that together, Dear Leader.
In a flasback to my Prague days, we missed the train and spent a lot of our a.m. in a herna-like bar by the bahnhof. Requisite fit-challenged but friendly mom-type was on hand to supply beers until our departure.
So what's next?

Sorry I missed it! I promise I will try harder to make the next one!

Oh no! you should have just given me a call... I'm sure I could have put you up here. Next - hmm, well - Tuesday's are the pub quiz in mannheim - people usually come in by about 7:30 - 8 and leave by 11 ish. Check out the BW thread for more on that. I think Ashley is planning a visit to Heidelberg next Sat. There're usually some fortnightly
drinks thing also going on in Heidelberg. And I'll plan a meet up here or in Saarbruecken soon - p'raps first week of March??

God, that's awful! I"m so sorry I didn't at least offer you a lift to the station but I wasn't at all sure how my driving was going to go or where the station was. I rarely drive here at all and have only driven a handful of times when there is no traffic around. So I didn't feel comfortable enough to offer you a lift. I have a mental block about my driving sometimes but I should have offered you the lift to the station.
How long did you have to wait?

But we really enjoyed the evening, it was lovely to meet you two and see our Dear Leader again. Lovely spot too! I'll have a look at Saarbruecken too. But I'm wondering, would any of you guys like to celebrate St Patricks Day this year with a lonely Irish girl...me! I don't think anything much goes on in these parts. There's a parade in
Munich alright but it's on Sunday and everyone has work the next day. But maybe we could meet up, wear green and go to an Irish bar or two in Saarbruecken or Trier or anywhere with a bit of craic! whaddya think??? Go on, take pity on me!
bohemka
Feb 23 2008, 3:52 pm
Oh, don't worry about us. I've been practicing most of my life for the moment that I'd have to spend the wee hours in a smoky dive bar.
Not sure about St. Patrick's Day. Her parents may be visiting. But if not, we'll be up for/to something.

Feb 23 2008, 3:57 pm
When is St. Patrick's day? If it's 13-17 March unfortunately I'm away from that week until the end of March

But I'm happy to come celebrate it before then!
I think the next meetup should be in Saarbruecken, soon...
AshleyM
Feb 23 2008, 5:34 pm
St. Paddy's day sounds like fun! Isn't it the 18th?
It's been so long since I have actually had someone to celebrate it with I have forgotten when it is! Mr. A being a ruuskie has no inclination to celebrate any holiday that's not celebrating Stalin.

(kidding of course)
But we can all have merry fun giving him a good hard pinch when he refuses to wear green!
I may even
drink a green beer.

Or a appletini..that's green too!
Next weekend is my b-day so Mr. A is taking me to Cedars in HD. It would be nice to have someone to share a water pipe with bit of apple tobbacco! I'll make a post about that in a bit.

Hey guys, just wanted to say it was great fun to meet up with you yesterday

Sorry you missed the train Scott. To be honest I don't think getting a lift with my missus would make any difference, if anything you'd get there later. She took about 15 minutes to set the mirrors, seat, headrest etc. You were probably down at the train station when we left the car park!

hehe
When did you make it home? I hope you weren't stuck at the train station till 6 am

Thanks Gerry, I never even thought of looking at Luxembourg! That looks pretty lively and quite a bit of variety too. Not so far to travel either and an oul train back means we can both have a gargle. I'll see if I can round up a posse

Hi All,
It's time we organised another RLP meetup - The choices are Saarbruecken, Trier or Kaiserslautern. (or even Neustadt if Bohemka would suggest a spot.) Who'd be interested??

Hello ! I'm a Newbie, but I'd be very interested. Trier would be the best for me. However, I'm probably out of the age range of people here from what I've read. I'm 53, but most of my friends are at least 10 years younger, but I appreciate my idea of "meeting for drinks" might be different to yours. Rather you were brutally honest if you're a younger group. But, if there's anyone out there in general who'd be interested in meeting up, let me know.

We're a younger crowd, but everyone is welcome to the drinks meetup

I haven't heard back from the Trier regulars (I mean you turasteanga and dannyboy) or any of the others from Saarbruecken, so this appears to be still tentative.

In Neustadt? Actually, there's kind of a hot spot called Neustadt Hbf (been around a while), and tons of people go there and get in these red things that move horizontally to other towns that actually have bars.
We're away for two weeks, but we're always up for something. Weinfest season is about to kick off, though, and that's certainly worth coming down for. I'll keep you posted for schorle.
