Foton-M1 was an unmanned space mission launched in 2002 by a Russian Soyuz rocket. The rocket's payload consisted of 44 experiments prepared by the European Space Agency (ESA). The launch occurred at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, about 800km north of Moscow.

The launch failed after one of the rocket's five engines did not start. Approximately fifteen seconds after lift-off, the rocket fell back to the launch pad and exploded.

The explosion killed 20-year-old soldier Ivan Marchenko and eight other soldiers were injured. Rocket fragments fell in the woods starting a forest fire. The rocket and all its experimental payload was a complete loss.

ESA scientists were watching the launch and captured the explosion on video.

The following video is actually three clips, one after the other. The third one is the best, starting at 3 minutes 26 seconds.

The commentary is is great:

Foik in 'ell!
Shit. Shit. Shit.
Aaaaggggghhhhhhhhhhh! Jesus Christ!
Oh my God, I thought I was going to die then.
Fuck me! Fuckin' hell, it failed.
...and so on.

I laugh every time I hear that Irish guy go "Foik in ell".
