Where to buy country ham

Salt-cured Southern-style

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know of a place that imports American foodstuffs in or around Munich? I'm organizing an American-style brunch party for neighbors and would like to serve country ham (the salt-cured type found in the South). Thanks...

I'm not sure if you can get the true-blue American style ham here. Your best bet is going to Dallmayr or Käfer to see what kinds of ham they offer; Spanish serrano is fairly close to salt-cured ham, being coated in salt for a few weeks before being air-cured.

Don't forget the red-eye gravy.

Saw a few Country hams running thru the fields this morning... If your fast perhaps you can bag one. wink.gif

They have it at Schlemmermeyer. There's one in the Kaufhof at Marienplatz. It costs an arm and a leg. Considering that that's what it is, that should be ok. Otherwise just go to a farm ahead of time.

Thanks guys. I'll check out Schlemmermeyer and see if I can deal with the price sticker shock. I thought about the red eye gravy, but I'm not sure my German friends would like it. Grits was another idea, but my German wife thinks they're awful.

Try the Weißwurst dry.gif

i agree with the German wife- grits are horrible!

My disappointment with grits was simply that the name is very misleading. I was expecting something dryer and, well, grittier.

I just love the smoked ham (Katenschinken - no its not the local moggies) that we can get on the local market up here...

Huh... my German husband loves grits. Does your wife also hate Griesbrei?

My Bavarian fancies GRITS - girls raised in the south.
