Starting an "Einzelunternehmer" as a U.S. citizen

Is this business option possible? Other advice?

Dear all,

I've been reading the topics with a great interest, unfortunately, none of them mentions if it's possible for an American to start a business as Einzelunternehmer. Is it possible ? Still as Einzelunternehmer, can the owner hire other people, for example, for languages or communication trainings, teaching, coaching...?
The other concern is if it's possible sometime in the future once the Einzelunternehmer has been started to switch to GmbH?

Thank you all,

And have a great week end

(1) You´ll need a residence permit (purpose: self employed work in Germany) which you only will get under these conditions:
prevailing economic interest or specific regional need for this business,
expectation of a positive impact to economy, and
secured finance of the business by own capital or loan.
(2) Yes an Einzelunternehmer can hire people.
(3) Yes you could switch to GmbH.

Thank you for your reply.
Do I get the residence permit once in Germany or in the USA ?

Thank you again

The residence permit and the permission to earn money (work visa) are interconnected. From the outside it looks tricky but it's not really.

You have to be in Germany to get permission to reside here.

You can't get a residence permit without the work permission and you can't get work visa without the residence permit. So what happens is:
Step one: When you arrive you can get a temporary residence permit for 3 months
Step two: Then take your residence permit and get your work permit
Step three: Then you go back and get a longer residence permit.

I don't know if you can skip all this dancing around if you already have a work visa prior to arriving.

Depending on your work visa you may get a residence permit for either:
(1) only as long as your work visa is valid, or
(2) only one year (which is totally normal and easily renewable based on your verbal confirmation that you are still earning enough to support yourself. After a couple of years they give you longer increments of permission.), or
(3) if you have a "necessary" job you'll get a 5 year residence permit.

The last time I checked, naturalization is 9 years.
