- Alvin and the Chipmunks
- National Treasure: Book of Secrets
- Charlie Wilson's War
- Elizabeth: The Golden Age
- P.S., I Love You
- Vorne ist verdammt weit weg
So, basically, the movies we wanted to see are now gone!
I was originally going to post a movie meetup event in the meetups & events section, but now it seems like this might be a non-event.
Still, however, I'd like for us to do a movie night. I'd be up for #2 or #3. The rest don't seem interesting at all to me.
Alvin and the Chipmunks is supposedly a horrible live-action-with-CGI remake of the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon franchise, brought to you by the director of the also-live-action-with-CGI Garfield 2. Elizabeth is a sequel to the original Elizabeth movie -- and it's supposed to be an even slower paced drama / "historical epic" based loosely on the life of Queen Elizabeth. P.S., I Love You is a sappy chick-flick about a husband who dies and sends letters to his widow from beyond the grave. Vorne ist verdammt weit weg is, according to one comment on IMDB a German movie about "the fridge that knows the future" and sexual perversion. Uh, what?
So, now a little about the two movies that seem salvageable:
National Treasure: Book of Secrets is the sequel to National Treasure, which was a campy, cheesy, but sort-of-fun-to-watch (but almost embarrassing to admit) movie kind of along the lines of Indiana Jones meets Mission Impossible with a lot of conspiracy theories and stupidly ridiculous plot points, and it stars Nicolas Cage as the lead. The sequel seems like it will be more of the same, so it might be fun, if you're able to suspend disbelief during its unbelievable antics throughout the duration of the action flick. This sort of movie works much better when going to the theater to watch with others, as everyone can all laugh at how stupid the movie is -- again, it's fun to watch in a visual action candy sort of way, but it makes James Bond look like a serious documentary.
Charlie Wilson's War is a true story about a congressman in the US (evidently from Texas) who started and funded a war in Afghanistan several years ago. It stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Even though it's based on a true story, it's supposed to be pretty funny at times too... and the average rating (according to Google) is 4/5 stars, so that's not too shabby at all.
