Has anyone done the
night-time skiing? Experiences? All I've heard is that it can be extremely cold.
Anyone interested in doing this on 26th Feb? It's being offered by Top-On-Snow (Oberpollinger) for 29€ including the bus-trip and skipass..leaves at ca.
5pm from
Marienplatz and you get I geuss a couple of hours skiing...on just one or two slopes which are floodlit.
If some people are interested, I will post the link and we could book it individually and go together.

I went night skiing with the ski club a couple times. Once in lengries and once in oberaudorf. Basically just the main run is floodlit and open, but it was a lot of fun. I told the boys I would take them if it snowed again, so if the ski club doesn't get their act together, I might join you!

I've done floodlit skiing (though not in Germany) and it was weird. My eyes seemed to be giving me conflicting information. Well worth a shot.
Yes it was cold, but that's because it was cold.
Sounds like fun.

I'd be up for it. I've never done it and it sounds like fun. Do you have to bring your own skis or can you still rent them there? Given that it'll be late and all that.

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be you'd have to take your own, since 1) the ski rental places are probably shut by the time you come down off the mountain, and 2) you don't actually have that much time on the slopes...about 2-3 hours, and renting for just that period is a waste (and takes away from the time you have on the slopes).
I havre conciled myself to having to take a half day off work in order to get home, get my gear and get back to
Marienplatz - but I am prepared to sacrifice myself for the experience

Just for info you can also ski in the evening at the
Blombergbahn down near Bad Tölz. The main slope is floodlit and there is a snowboard park there aswell I think. A colleague of mine often goes there after work during the winter months.

oh no, a choice

Thanks, madgibson, I didn't know about that and will look into it for future reference. But for this one I'll stick with the Oberaudorf thing, as they basically take care of all the organiation for you.
I am pretty keen to go on 26th, so any other seriously inetersted people out there (apart from those who've already posted of course)?

I am, just don't know what to do about the whole lack of skis situation. Could be a bit of a handicap, you see.
I mean I do have a snowboard I have been trying to learn how to use properly for over 8 years now but there is no way for my brain to get my body to go down a slope sideways, it just ain't doing it even in broad daylight, so I don't really see myself trying this at nighttime.
Sooo... anyone can give me a lend of a pair of skis?

On a more serious note: would it be possible - and worth it if yes - to rent skis in
Munich?
Panama

What you ask, you shall get:
Ski rental shops in Munich.I took a ski course last month where you were not allowed to rent skis at the resorts so I rented the skis in Intersport Lange every weekend. And as I only needed them for one day, in theory, I only paid for one day even though I had them from Friday till Monday. You can't find out how much the skis have been used, see?
PS: I would also like to come to this, but will be in
Frankfurt, again, teaching, again.

I gave some skis away for free a few weeks ago via TT

, but anyway without boots and poles, and you would also need to borrow some which had bindings to fit you. Renting from Munich is, as Panama says, possible, but whether you consider it worth it for just an evening (3 hrs max) I don't know.
I hope a solution turns up honeybeez!
Panama: shame you'll be away. If you like, I'll blindfold you tomorrow so you can get a bit of the feeling of skiing at night

What's that sea-king, you want to wrap me in a bin bag?! Some freaky fetish you've got going on there

On a serious note: will look into renting some then, thanks for the help Panama. Have no idea of the prices but if it is not too expensive it'll be worth it for the craic of skiing at night.

I've done this night skiing at Oberaudorf and iirc they do rent skis on the hill and are still open in time to return them.

23€ for one day for skis, boots and poles. Less per day if you rent more days.

Thanks for the info ER and Panama! Great news, it is cheap and I can rent them there, perfect, best of both worlds.
I guess I'm in then Ruhaperu.

OK, so far a few people have shown interest. I think I'll do this whatever. So here's the link:
Night skiing regstrationWell down the page, after the Tagesfahrten, is the info (Wintersport bei Flutlicht) and registration (link Anmeldung) form for the night skiing for next
Tuesday.
It leaves at 5pm from in front of the Neptunbrunnen on Elisenstrasse.
So whoever is coming, sign up directly with Top on Snow/Oberpollinger and post here - sowe know who's going along.

Shoot - didn't even check that it's during the week, makes it out for me. I guess I'll just have to pester the ski club into getting their act together

Have fun!

According to that link the bus does not leave from
Marienplatz but from
Nordbad,
Hauptbahnhof,
Ostbahnhof or Olympiazentrum.
It doesn't matter for the event itself, but I thought I'd note it down here just in case I get confused again.

Not true.
Also not
Marienplatz, as in my initial post on the topic, the night-time skiing leaves from/returns to the Neptunbrunnen (i.e. close to Karlsplatz; first time I checked the site I mixed it up in my mind with Fischbrunnen

)

I take it that means you'll be coming along, Mr. J?

Aye lass, if I can work out this sign-up thingy. All this modern technology stuff.
But seriously, on the sign-up page the drop-down box for point of departure only gives the 4 options I mentioned.
ruapehu
Feb 18 2008, 2:28 pm
ah yes, I see what you mean now. Anyway, I have just booked for myself and just wrote in the comments box at the bottom "Abfahrtstelle Neptunbrunnen wird nicht angeboten!" I still assume that is the departure point for these special trips. Also a little strange on the sign-up form was they didn't ask for ec or creditcard details. But I expect they'll remember to ask for all that when I get the email confirmation.
Anyway, I'm going; now confirmed.

QUOTE(ruapehu @ Feb 18 2008, 2:28 pm)

or so I thought. Since I still hadn't received an email confirmation, I phoned them this evening. They told me they will confirm at the weekend. The reason: snow (or lack thereof). They are cecking it out again over the weekend and will make a decision as to whether it's suitable. Apparently at the moment it is still okay for skiers, but no longer so for sleds (? Schlitten). So anyone who still wants to go, they would have enough room, as they said they will drive a bus of the size according to the number of bookings.
So I shall be "praying" for snow.
Jeeves
Feb 21 2008, 10:28 am
According to the forecast if it snows then it will rain. So any snow at the height (lowt ?) of Oberaudorf will be artificial stuff, probably what is already on the ground.
So keep "praying".

Feb 25 2008, 9:46 pm
sod the praying..guess god doesn't like atheists.
Anyway, it's off. Too sunny over the weekend.
I assume you got an email from them too, Mr. J?
How about 2009?
Jeeves
Feb 25 2008, 9:48 pm
No e-mail half an hour ago. But I'd kinda guessed.
You reckon there'll be any snow in 2009?
ruapehu
Feb 25 2008, 9:51 pm
I got the email from them early this evening while I was out..but I had also already guessed.
Yes, 2009 there WILL be snow. I have been told. It's going to be a good winter (for skiers). Start saying it NOW.
EDIT: actually, I drove past Oberaudorf on Saturday on the way to Hochfügen, which DID in fact have snow. It was too early for the ski lifts to be running in Oberauzorf, and we came back over the Achenpass so I didn't get to look for it in the evening. In the morning it sure stuck out like a sore thumb, though. Everything else around was browny-green, and this one little slope in the middle of it all, all nice white (from a distance). So I guess it wouldn't have been great fun skiing on it.
