Hi All,

I will be visiting Perth and Sydney in March. I will be travelling alone.

Where would be a good place to meet people etc.

I looked at the visiting Sydney thread but wondering whats there to do in Perth.

The best part of Perth for going out and meeting people in the evenings is Northbridge. It's also where the highest concentration of backpackers seems to be.

As for other things to do, depends what you're interested in dunnit.

If you go to Perth you should take a trip to Rottnest Island and see some Quokkas. They are really cute and you don't find them anywhere else in the World. I would also recommend to go for a swim at Cottesloe Beach and visit Fremantle.

You're right: quokkas do live elsewhere in (mainland) WA but you'll only find them on Rottnest. Well worth a day trip and some really picturesque bays and beaches.

Fremantle is certainly worth a day trip too, just a short train ride from the city.

There really are loads of things to do, so it really does depend what you like to do. There are plenty of tour operators around (also concentrated on Northbridge) where you can suss out day tours and longer overlands. If it's your first time then take a 5-day trip (at least) up the coast and see Monkey Mia and Coral Bay and Exmouth, and if you can tag on Marble Bar (hottest town in Aus) and Karijini then do so.

One don't: do NOT take the day trip to Wave Rock. You'll be in the bus all day with about an hour max at the rock, which ain't worth it when you do get there.

Edit: I've just checked that you are going in March. It might well still be too wet up north to venture up there.

did you know that Perth is the world's most isolated city?
Jeeves
yes and the third windiest

which two cities are windier? (in case I forget to ask you tomorrow)

Wellington and Chicago

Anyhow, it's just occurred to me that another good thing to do is to go winetasting up the Swan Valley

I lived in Perth for almost twenty years and there's plenty to do over there. If you like the sights, go to the South Perth foreshore or Kings Park, both have excellent views of the city. If it's your thing, on a Sunday afternoon head down to the Cottesloe Hotel (right on the beach) for a Sunday session "sesh" and enjoy the atmosphere there. If you have more time head either up north to the pinnacles or down south to Margaret River and Pemberton and even further Albany (time permitting)

Northbridge can be a great place and Perth people bost of its "culture" but has nothing in comparrison to Germany, can also be a little dangerous of a night as it is a bit of a trouble spot.

If you have any other questions regarding Perth just PM me and I'll do the best I can to help.
