Who can prescribe anti-depressants in Germany?

so in the States a "psychiatrist" is a medical doctor and can prescribe them but a "psychologist" (who may have a doctoral degree/PhD) cannot

what title am I looking for in Germany? I want to see a therapist but one who also has the ability/authority to prescribe anti depressants if necessary. Thanks

A psychologist may well have a PhD (my ex for one) but they have no medical training whatsoever and that's why no scripts. I think you've answered your own q - you need a doctor.

your regular medical doc can but they usually (and should) refer you to a specialist, i.e. a psychiaratrist for the pills in conjunction with thereapy from a psychologist.

I asked for the professional titles of doctors who prescribe antidepressants in German which I was unsure of ...

NOW I know its Facharzt für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie.

My GP prescribed them to me.

Fine, if that's your attitude. Was only trying to help - as pretty much anywhere, first port of call should be your GP if you don't know better, but hey, your wiser now. Good luck getting your script filled.

According to my therapist, who is not a doctor, most therapists have a psychiatrist on demand who can prescribe drugs as needed.
