Hi there!

We are trilingual family, but with a bit different combination: Russian-English-German. Not sure we qualify for the meet-up smile.gif

I'm trying to increase the German part of the languages for my daughter (she is 4 y.o.), who speaks Russian and English (also goes to the English pre-school). Except cartoons and occasional conversations with her dad in German, I signed he up to the music classes for pre-schoolers (which are also in German). I feel that simply living in Germany is not enough to learn language well.

Would be interesting to exchange ideas and see how other parents manage.

Cheers

Hello there, well my husband is English and I am Colombian Spanish speaking, my little one was born in England and she was just starting to talk when we move here. I have been trying to get her into a English kita but I cant find one, so she is starting in a German one next week she is just 3. There is this theory that each parent has to speak only one language with the child directly even when the child reply in a different language. I don't know really about that cause a friend of mine speak with her daughter in indy and English and she is doing very well. Mine little one is mixing the languages a lot understand much better Spanish but talk much more English!! not sure how she will do with the German yet. I think an important thing for learning is the direct chat, and for this age the playmates have a decisive influence, teachers in this country not really interact with the child as much as in England for example.
I think it will be interesting to meet to share experiences and for the kids to play what do you think

I think that principle when one parents speak one (i.e. native) language to the child is a good one. I speak only Russian to my kids (ok, sometimes English) and must say their Russian is very good. Besides we read Russian books and watch cartoons.

I don't know how it's gonna evolve in the future, I have a few concerns. One is that in English school (I have noticed with my daughter) older kids tend to speak only English, even if, for example, both of them would be Germans. It's all about what is cool for them. I also know a few examples when kids with Russian heritage don't want to speak Russian with their parents, cause they think it's uncool. Spanish is always cool, so you don't have to worry about it! smile.gif

It's great that your child understands/speaks both Spanish/English. I'm sure that your kid will figure out German, kids are good and quick at languages, it's a fact. I moved here when my boy was just 2 and he learned German pretty quick. He was in English kindergarted in South Korea before. My both kids mix languages a lot. I've noticed when they play it's either in German, or in English. For 'serious talk' or with me they use Russian.

It also depends on the situation: if you are not planning to stay in Germany, than you probably don't mind if your child knows just enough language to converse. We moved here for good, so I think it's really important that my kids learn German well.

It would be nice to meet up with kids, I'm available on weekends. We stay at Blakenese, tehre are a few nice playgrounds here. Let me know what time and date suitable for you.
