Over the past few weeks I've watched while the largeAgfa site on the ring at Tegernseerlandstr/Spixstr has been converted to an equally large hole in the ground. I did a bit of a search on Google but couldn't find much about the history of the site, although I'd guess it was part of the Agfa-Gevaert AG Fototechnik company that went bankrupt a short while ago, and the site is destined to become flats. All the old offices have gone, and only the 14 storey tower remains of what was once a large and successful German company. This tower is something of a landmark for anyone who approaches Munich from the A8/A99 towards Giesing and it seems pretty apparent that it's being prepared for demolition too. Google Earth has a good image of the site at 48° 6'32.79"N, 11°34'47.30"E, although it looks nothing like that now.
Has anyone seen anything in the news about what the fate of the building will be and how they intend to demolish it? If explosives will be involved then I'll be sure to be there.

Old smoke stacks are usually blown-up or knocked down with a crane/wrecking ball.. If they have the rest of the site cleared out already, and you don't see them bringing in a large mobile crane, then its going to be a big boom...

When did they go bankrupt? I knew they were in difficulty as their market was going the same way horse darwn carridge's went. Didn't though hear the final nail being hammered in.

Wikipedia has more on AgfaPhoto going bankrupt but I'm not 100% sure that this site was part of that company. The rest of Agfa continues as before. The tower that remains is a large office block, not just a tall chimney, so it's hard to see how it can be flattened by a wrecking ball.

Sunday 17th at 12 noon, according to our local Käseblatt (Wochenanzeiger). A radius of around 200m will be cordoned off, and nearby residents will be evacuated for the duration. The adjacent part of the Mittlerer Ring will be closed for around an hour. 52 metres high, the tower was built in 1959. It will be replaced by Agfa Park Giesing, a complex of offices, commercial and residential properties plus a 270-bed hotel (completion scheduled for 2013). Experts reckon that around 17 m will be left after blasting which will be demolished using conventional methods. Edit: Explosives for the main bit, not wrecking ball (specialist blasting company Geiger from Oberstorf)

Considering where the tower is the ring has to be shut for the big boom and they wouldn't do that on a weekday. I wonder where the best vantage point will be? I guess they'll block everything off to the West of the tower by the flats there, and the ring road to the South, but maybe on the far side of the ring it will be OK? Another possibility may be up the Alte Peter church in the centre which is a fair distance away but you'd see the tower fall sure enough.

Well according to the papers yesterday, the old Agfa Hochhaus is going to be Blown-up tomorrow (Sunday 17 Feb) at 1200 Noon. If you happen to live in the area, you should have received a warning notice, requiring you to evacuate the area between 1100-1230. The surrounding streets will also be closed and blocked off.
Don't know where the best vantage point to get pix will be, but I bet its going to be one big boom...

I was thinking of taking the camera along to take some pics of this. Then I read the stadt münchen pages about the demolition and saw who was handling some of the demolition - Reinthaler.
I've got first hand experience of Reinthaler muppets, just play safe and keep your wits about you if you decide to go tomorrow.

Anyone here live along Tegernseer Straße? Or have contacts along the street?
Vantage points for spectators will be set up on Sunday - the article says Tegernseer Landstraße between Grünwalder Strasse and the safety zone, Tegernseer Landstraße between Chiemgaustraße and the safety zone and the park at the corner of Weißenseestrasse and Unterbergstrasse.

The ex-inlaws have a perfect vantage point from their 3rd story balcony just off the ring and facing the agfa.
However, they have been ordered to leave the area for a couple hours, not just to stay away from windows and balconies but actually leave the building and vicinity. Shame.

Ach der scheiss. Seems it's in the range of Pullach and might lob a few bricks towards the inlaws. Pity they're on their perpetual holidays. Egypt this time.
