Curry war fails to take off in Franconia - Germany

8pm Thu 7.Feb.2008 @ Tibet, Johannisstraße 28
garrett
There's no post for this upcoming Thursday's curry night, so I'm taking initiative (despite being "the new guy") and starting one stone-soup style.

So for this week, let's have a curryful meetup at the best Indian restaurant in town (wherever that is*) at 7pm.

* I've only been to Taj Mahal, and it was good -- if you have another suggestion, reply with it. wink.gif

I'm still sulking after Sue87 hijacked my curry group, and also trying to do some private work in the evenings so am not guaranteeing turning up at curry.

In my opinion the Taj Mahal is the worst curry house in Nürnberg. The best is arguably the Mount Lavinia.
Ex-Seattleite
You go, Garrett, kudos to you for taking the initiative! I believe that Anthony mentioned he might schedule curry night this week since Sue won't be able to come, but he hasn't posted anything ... and it's already Wednesday.

I personally would like to try the Taj Mahal to be able to see and taste for myself if it's really the worst curry house in Nuremberg. Judging by their website and the location of the restaurant, I cannot imagine that being the case. So, I vote for the Taj Mahal this week.

Oh God, did I really say that? I must have been hammered!! Well I'll try and be Johnny On The Spot next time in the event of another lack of upper management. I think I'd be down for curry tomorrow night. About 70/30... no no, make that 90/50.
Antone_Capone
Oh as for the place, I've never been to the Taj and wouldn't mind trying it for myself. Then again the food at Mount Lavinia really is stunning and we haven't been in a while. I don't know, this is why I should not be stepping up as curry leader, I'm very indecisive when it comes to food.

I guess my vote will go to Taj as well.
MadAxeMurderer
I think you should go to the Taj. Not being cynical. Don't want to go to curry tomorrow, or at least do want to try and work, and if you were going to the Mount Lavinia I'd be sorely tempted. Also I've only been to theTaj once, maybe they were on an off day. And maybe my opinion sucks. Make up your own minds.

Shall I tell my mobile phone geek circle you're going there?
MadAxeMurderer
OK I've made a decision for you and updated the title. You're going to the Tadsch Mahal at 19:30.

Its on Johannisstr 10, Tel 0911/208233
sarabyrd
MAM, you really are dictator material.
mudgum
I will try to be there, but I probably wont be able to make it until after 8pm.
Sue87
Awww wish I could go too! And yeah, I second what our Seattleite friend said, Garrett. It's really cool that you're picking this up. This is how it should be, no matter what self-proclaimed dictators say about "hijacking". biggrin.gif

I'm off to the Czech Republic for some good, old-fashioned relaxation and cross-country skiing. With my mommy. ^^
(Keeping my fingers crossed that the food there is good, yet not a case of past-the-lips-onto-the-hips.)

I wish you all a good time tomorrow night! Can't wait for next time. See ya!
MadAxeMurderer
Ha curry night hasn't matured until there's been a curry war. Munichs already had 3 and is spoiling for a fourth.

So bring it on Sue, pakoras at dawn I say. May the best vindaloo win!

To prove I'm still the commanding dictator in charge, I've changed the title to 8:00pm to accomodate Mudgum. Of course this probably means that Garret wil turn up at 7pm, Antone will turn up at 7:30, both will feel unloved and leave. Then Mudgum will wonder why nobody waited for him. But do I care???

I talked to my creative director who is not only a native Nürnberger, but a food/restaurant freak. He has never been to the Taj. He said he was always put off by the prices and the decor as well as reviews he read in mags. He said right next to the Taj is a place called Tibet which is really really good. The menu is much smaller than the Taj's but he said the food is very tasty and the prices are friendly. He went on to explain that Tibet offers a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere that is almost bar-like rather than having a typical curry sit-down dinner amongst paper mache Shiva statues.

I don't know, I'm the type of person who'll kick the cow till the very last second hoping it comes to, refusing to believe it's gone! I'm still willing to give the Taj a chance but I figured since Tibet is literally RIGHT NEXT DOOR, I ought to throw the proverbial wiffle bat in our bike's spokes.

What do we think?
sarabyrd
You have just instigated a Curry War, congratulations. Pass Plärrer and collect drei im Wecklä.
MadAxeMurderer
I've never even hear of the Tibet, but am pleased to read Antone's creative director back me up. I've changed the title again, just because I can.

I think you should still go to the Tadsch and confirm it sucks, and then go for drinks afterwards in the Tibet and pick up a menu.

In fact I don't think, I'm ordering you...

MAM was right about the 'Tasch Mahal'. I was indeed there sometime back and the quality of food wasnt that great. It aint bad, but I wouldnt go there again and again. Maybe once in a while, its ok. The 'Tibet' is indeed good and just a couple of metres away from the Tadsch(Taj) Mahal. Its food is better and also the ambience.

I spoke to those people at Taj Mahal too. I gotta know that its one of the oldest Indian restaurants in Nürnberg and they have been around for more than 15 years. And those guys looked like they are from North Western Indian state called 'Rajasthan'. So the food offered by a restaurant depends on who runs it (The Cook plays a major role) and how they keep themselves abreast of new recipes. In my opinion, they look otherwise. In Mt.Lawinia, its different. The cook looks like he's from Sri Lanka or South Eastern state of India (Tamil Nadu). The food is almost like South Indian food with a bit of Sri Lankan touch. I liked it better than Tadsch Mahal.

On the flip side, you could measure things when you can compare that to some other relative thing. So, its worth giving a try at Taj Mahal (It aint that bad and it wouldnt kill you). And if it doesnt suit your appetite, you can always go for 'Tibet' or any other one.
Antone_Capone
Well the beauty of my "suggestion" is that the two places are right next to each other so the decision doesn't have to be made right away. If I wanted war I'd take over the reigns, call for mutiny and bring this ship into Mt. Lavinia's harbor for a sexy swordfish curry... arrrrg me matey.

As another alternative I hear Micky D's is coming out with the new McVindaloo!

if I can pry myself away from the African Cup semi finals, i'll be there...but no promises. any final decision on which restaurant?
MadAxeMurderer
Antone_capone seems to be proposing some kind of illegal activity.

I’d like to make it clear that the curry night, organisers of curry night, sponsors of curry night, supporters of curry night, friends of curry night, suppliers of curry night, and any people, entities or institutions in any way connected or otherwise with curry night do not approve or condone the smoking of illegal substances, largely because they’re bloody hard to get.

Anybody caught indulging in this activity will be required to hand it over to me for safe keeping, and evaluation, unless they’re already sharing it.

Peace man…
Antone_Capone
Ok, I say Tibet is the way forward! The menu looks good and you can have a starter and a main for the price of an average main at the Taj! None of us have been there so it will be an experience for everyone and then we can fight about where to go for drinks afterwards to satisfy any feistiness we may be feeling from this shaky build-up of a curry night. I sense another good one!

Everyone coolio with that?
Antone_Capone
Free bud for anyone who changes the topic title to curb confusion! Ok not really, but if one of those vets could change it that would be great!
MadAxeMurderer
Done! Are you happy with the time which might allow Mudgum to turn up?

Now when am I going to take delivery of the bud? Kinda hard to get good buds or even just leaves here. I'm impressed.
Antone_Capone
Your the man!
Ex-Seattleite
Oh my goodness, guys, I'm glad I checked the site one more time before leaving the house. I think we should decide TONIGHT where we are going NEXT Thursday so this last minute switcharoo doesn't happen anymore.

Okay, so 8 PM at the Tibet. I'm cool with that as long as that's the final decision.

Let's hope everybody else who planned on being there tonight read the change of restaurant.

Is anybody going to be there before 8 PM? I wouldn't mind getting there a bit earlier and having a drink at the bar.

mudgum
Tibet is cool. I have been there several times. Will/did someone make a reservation? It can be difficult to get even a table for 2 there. Don't know if Thursday is a hot night there though.

eat curry not war (err... somthing like that)
Antone_Capone
Stefanika and I will be there at 19:00 for a drink. We'll reserve a table then. I think that will be enough advance notice on a Thursday. My CD says it wont be that busy. And hey if it is, we certainly know where to go then eh!!??
garrett
Okay, Tibet @ 8 sounds like a plan.

(Thankfully I spend all day in front of a computer for work and caught this before heading out. biggrin.gif )
sarabyrd
I should have peeked into this earlier to prevent shorba-shed. Why didn't you try the dipsomaniac diplomatic solution, split in two groups and have your starters at Taj Mahal and the main at Tibet and vice versa? Now the pearly gleam of the Taj Mahal will dissolve in tears and Tibet will finally feel liberated just because some curry-geile ex-pats are so easily swung by one dictator.
MadAxeMurderer
So how was the Tibet? Is it worthy of a regular excursion? I notice the menu is quite limited which is often a good sign. They can do a few dishes really well, rather than many not so well. Anybody poked their noses into the Tadsch?
Antone_Capone
The Tibet was really good! Great flavor, great/bio quality as well as Alpha Male portions all made for a fantastic meal! That and the fact that I had a big main, papadams, 2 pils and an aperitif that totaled 21 EUR made me a real happy camper. The waitress didn't ask how spicy we wanted our dishes but I imagine if you ask for the dish to be extra spicy they would accommodate you, although we didn't try.
