Getting a German police background check

How to do this, when required for a visa etc.

Hello,

I lived in Osnabrueck for studying abroad from Oct 04 to June 05. But now I need a police check from Germany for my current visa application for Canada...

Can anyone help me with information on how I can get one? Where can I apply? I am now living in Japan so is there an online application I can use?

Any help with this would be gratefully received.

Thank you very much in advance!

Do you mean a "Führungszeugnis"?

From above link:

QUOTE

So you go to your Einwohnermeldeamt oder Bürgeramt where you live. As you don't live there any more this could get interesting...

Police checks

Tis usually available with a simple search. If it's related to German officialdom it's probably been asked and answered before.

How to get one, if you live outside of germany. (only in german)
And this would be the form to fill out, mentioned in this article. (pdf)

Has anyone ordered one of these from overseas? I'm in the States, and I need one to apply for permanent residence in Australia. The clock is ticking, and I'm just wondering how long it will take to get it.

Same pdf here:

Fill it, print it out, and have the data you give on it verified and signed by a German consolute or embassy, or alternatively a foreign official agency or notary. Then send to address given on it.

You'll need the "personal" version, since they don't send the "full" version to foreign agencies. Depending on whether they want a verified (apostilled) version in Australian, you'll need to sign additional forms.

As for timing - umm, don't expect it in less than 4-6 weeks i'd say. Likely double that.

So have you actually done this kato, or are you speculating? I've already got the forms.

If it's like most German bureaucratic procedures, it will either be incredibly quick or incredibly slow.
I know it took under than two weeks for my background check to get delivered to the local Ausländerbehörde after they requested it.

to get a fuehrungszeugniss while you live here takes 1-2 weeks it might take a bit longer if they gotta send it abroad

Anyone ever had to get one of these for an Australian visa? Just wondering if I need the apostille. I'll call the embassy in the morning and check, but I'm trying to get all my paperwork ready tonight. I sent the 13 euros yesterday, and my stupid bank charged me $35 to send the money! Fuckers.
interplanetjanet
I'm flabbergasted. I've spoken to two different people on the information line at the Australian embassy in Washington, and neither one of them has ever heard of an apostille!

Not all employees are created alike. Whom did you talk to?

At any rate...
The office giving an apostille for a German document would be the German consulate/embassy.
Perhaps Australia doesn't require you to get one.

I wasn't asking them to give me the apostille. I was asking if I needed to get one. I spoke to two different people on the embassy's information line, and the second guy I spoke to insisted that if it doesn't say I need it in the instructions (which it doesn't), then I don't. Of course, I didn't want to believe him and asked to speak with someone who at least knows what an apostille is, and he insisted there was nobody else I could speak with.

Wow, I'm impressed! I transferred the money on May 21st, sent the paperwork 2-3 day delivery on the 23rd, and I received the Führungszeugnis today, just 17 days after I posted the paperwork.
