not meaning to be sexist at all but i was wondering if anyone was interested in starting up a new book club reading books aimed more towards women? I was thinkin maybe modern chick lit but also some of the classics, anybody up for it?
VenusInFurs
Actually I think this is more up my alley hehe. I'm a huge fan of chick lit, and also Jane Austen et all.
Tibia
Oh yes.
Sandgroperin
why VIF "right up your alley" - that's a little Freudian - has reading my writing corrupted you?
Tibia
Yes but Sandgroperin, (I wont refer to your alley as I dont know you, but) are you interested in the book club idea?
chicacherrycola
I like the idea, sounds good
winterfeld
where and when?
internationalcomic
I'm interested in starting or JOINING a Women's Book club.

Just let me know biggrin.gif
sunny
looks like a group is coming together - count me in. I noticed Jenny the OP hasn't logged in for a while...?

Is anyone interested in meeting up on a Sunday afternoon in March? Say, the 23rd? We could gather at my place, put a reading list together and dye easter eggs. Oh yes, and drink mimosas!

Right now I'm reading "Eat, Pray, Love" and I really love it. Here's a piece the NYT did on it

Let me know about the 23rd - I think around 3pm is best

March 23rd is Easter Sunday, in fact.

(Apologies for butting in, I'm nowhere near Berlin.)
sunny
thank you, Kay, for that helpful note. I would suggest then the 30th of March (of course minus the egg dying but still beverages and books)
VenusInFurs
That sounds great to me!
chicacherrycola
Beverages and books - well thats two of my favorite things!

The 30th should be ok for me, I will confirm that when i've figured out which country I'll be in.
Tibia
Hi there, 30th March sounds good for me too, the only thing is i'll be taking someone to the airport that day, so need to check what time that is, and get back to ya'll.
Chloe1984
i read soooo much out here! I'd love to be able to actually discuss the books I read...plus i love mimosas and easter-egg dying. I am in.
sunny
great, the more the merrier! we can also do a BOOK SWAP.
Bring along your old books to swap.
I'll PM my address and directions to the 'yes' rsvp's once the date gets closer.

Venus, should we try to get the old crafty beaver gang together?
Tibia

?
sunny
oh yeah ... that may need some explanation tongue.gif

We had a crafts group going for a while - some of us knitted, some drop spindled ... others were milliners. We gathered a few times and I thought that as a homage to Amy Sedaris we should call ourselves The Crafty Beavers!

Venus is actually a really good knitter!
Tibia
Did one of you read from "Pilgrims Progress" for the others?

Actually i think the crafty beavering sounds waaaay more interesting (not to mention productive) than the book club.
berliner2007
I think it sounds very interesting and ill try to make it march 30. Has a location been picked?
sunny
hiya - we'll do it at my place. I live in Charlottenburg and will PM you with directions once the date gets closer.

ladies: feel free to bring books to swap, your knitting or anything else crafty that you're working on. If you are not crafty, no problemo you can mix the mimosas.

Hallo- would love to join the group, have heaploads of books to swap, but this is the same day as the Booker book group. Are you open to new joiners? If so, perhaps next time on a different date than the Booker club?

I'm new to Toytown and looking for adult women to speak to- I'm stuck home with 2 kids most of the time.
sunny
yeah, I noticed that it conflicts with the booker t group meeting which is not optimal.

How about we move the date to Sunday April 6th?

Can people chime in on that date -- yes, no, maybe so?

Still at my place, still at 3pm.
Tibia
Yes count me in definately for that date, thanks!
chicacherrycola
yep, the 6th is good!

See you then
VenusInFurs
Yeah I can come on the 6th
gail123
Great- thanks. biggrin.gif Is is Eat Pray Love that we are reading?
sunny
hi gail! for this meeting we're just going to do a book swap, eat/drink and some people may bring knitting or other crafts along. We can also develop a 'reading list' and figure out how we want this to be organized.

I have read "Eat Pray Love" and would be happy to discuss it with you or anyone else - but its not an official selection.
gail123
That's good, because my copy is in the mail from the States, part of the 59 lbs of books I shipped back on my visit there last month wink.gif and I haven't gotten my M-bags yet! (Any day, I hope!)
smoofy
I'm a member of the booker tea group, but would be interested in joining another and/or switching if it suits me better. However, I'm confused what "chick lit" refers to exactly... Do you have a book list in mind?
Tibia
Hi Smoofy,
Thats the purpose of the initial meet-up, so we can decide what sort of literature we are each imagining "chick lit" to encompass. Then hopefully we can decide on a list. I imagine that super-fluffy "guilty pleasure" literature that you read in the bath in half an hour and which tends to conform to the Bridget Jones template, might make for boring discussion. But that's just my take on it.
Come along and tell us what your take on it is...
berliner2007
april 6th sounds fine to me.
smoofy
Haha, I'm not the fluffy bath type, but it's good to hear we're thinking along the same lines. I'd be curious to see what you gals are reading these days. I'm at a loss for books lately and am thinking of resorting to all those burly classics about war and fishing that I avoided in the past (example: Old Man & The Sea). Halp! ohmy.gif
Tibia
I just sorted out the books i want to get rid of, theres 80 of them so i will bring a small assortment only! None of them are burly classics about war or fishing, im glad to say. Gad, no.
sunny
good work Tibia! I've got about 10 - 15 to swap and its a mötley bunch.
JP17
I would like to come too if you still have room.
sunny
Hi JP17, yes there is room so we'll see you on the 6th!
intheSkywithDiamonds
Hi! I'm completely new to this forum and have only been in berlin for just over a week. Would love to come along on the 6th if there's still room? Due to light packing I could probably only bring one book along (ian mcewan - on chesil beach), but it's there if anyone wants it!
sunny
diamonds, yes there was room for one more person and you are officially it wink.gif

RSVPing for the book swap/crafty beavers/mimosa blow out is now closed.

I will be PMing all of the 'yes' rsvps with directions to my apartment within the next week.

Happy Easter, ladies!
tasha80
Hi all, I am a new user to this forum yet not new in Berlin: I've been here for 3 and a half years! Could I come to your next bookswapping meeting? I understand that it is not possible to come along on the 6th as you are full but maybe the next one? I am a bookworm!
KellyfromKanada
Hi I am new to Berlin, and while clearly this book club is full, at least for the coming weeks, I was wondering where you all purchased your english language books

I was in a great book club in Canada and really enjoyed the experience so if you are open to more members please let me know. Regardless I would really like to get something new to read but have no clue where to look!

Thanks
Kelly
sunny
hi kelly,

check this
www.toytowngermany.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=78508

for bookstores in berlin. Booker T and Berlin Book club are both operating here - you can find more details using the search function above. Happy reading!
sansanberlin
Dear fellow readers,
I just found this wonderful site, because minutes ago, I edited a Blog where I am looking for women to participate in a ChickLit bookclub. As I see, this already exists. But maybe we can build a new one?
I'll give you the link of my blog...pardon my English, I am not a native speaker.
Hope to hear from you soon, girls!
Sandra

sunny
hey, we had a good chat and book swap but a group never got off the ground. so the idea is still on the table. I'm not up for orgaizing anything regular but can lend my place from time to time if you need it. happy reading!
Tibia
Hey, maybe this could be books-to-swap-and-discuss-and-crafty-beavering, mark II?
Ive read all the books i took away from the last swap, and Im definately game to try again and get this off the ground... i think the timing was bad earlier in the year, everyone was a bit too busy.
sunny
hey tibia et al, I would also be down for another swap/chat. I really loved one of the books I got in the swap "all the fishes come home to roost" - one of my favorite reads of the year. thanks to whoever brought that!

what about sunday, august 3 at 3 / my place again

anyone else interested to swap books?
Tibia
Yeah, August 3rd at 3pm does for me, count me in! If the day's nice we could picnic it?
