I have been here for 6 months now and twice I have seriously planned to go back. It has been really hard for me. Moving in to my girlfriends house with her teenage children giving up my customer base in England and dropping nearly 30k a year. I lived by the sea too which I also miss but strangely enough I have stayed. Things are becoming better slowly and maybe one day I get the job that better suits my skills .
Hold on it takes a bit. Germany is not so bad.

The only times I have been homesick was about a month after I first got here, christmas and my birthday. Apart from that I just try and remember that it is up to me to make this experience worth it. And I don't want to look back when I go home and think that I spent 2 years in germany and achieved nothing.
Now I'm heading home in a few months and I am sure I am going to be 'homesick' for Munich!
Is it really homesickness or just feeling lonely/fed up at the moment?
The first 1/2 year after my move here (25 yrs ago) were lonely but homesickness never came into it.

My gf gets homesick every now and then, but I think really it's more missing her family than anything else. Can't really say that I suffer that much although I used to miss Regensburg a lot. Most of my good friends left the island at the same time I did, so it's not really like all my friends are back home having a ball without me.
I was in the States a couple weeks ago, and quickly grew homesick for my life (my wife and kids) here in Germany. I like the States okay, but I never long to be there anymore. In fact just landing in Paris to board a flight to Stuttgart, I felt so happy to be back in Europe. I don´t understand the States anymore after 20 years away.

and it is really not that far, take the plane and make a trip :-)

Make every place you touch be your home.
Home sickness will be replaced with a sweet longing for all your other house rooms.
The price to pay is very high though.

i suffered from a bout of homesickeness recently. this is my first time living away from home. i just pigged out on comfort food and watched a funny movie. That cheered me up. I also blogged about it so my mum rang to cheer me up and got loads of msgs from friends they were jealous of me getting the chance to live in Germany. That cheered me up also. Dont worry babes it will pass. I will help tomorrow i promise!

Everybody goes through it!
I used to cross off the days until my next trip back home! God!
Now 5 years later I rarely go home, maybe once a year! I use my spare time to travel, travel, travel!
Take advantage of your situation, look at the amazing oppurtunites at yor feet. Think of the experiences you are having and sad as it seems I think of my mates back home who are missing the oppurtunities that I am having. I know they are happy with their lives though and why wouldn't they! This is the path I choose!
Now this path is moving me further afield to Hong Kong which I'm sure I'll start off homesick and just get into the swing of things again!
That's life!

Not quite the same distance to cover - but even I get homesick!
No matter where you go and how far from home, friends and family it is, it just will never be the same. I even miss supermarkets open till 10pm, kiosks at every corner (grab a beer, forgotten essentials such as milk, coffee etc...on a sunday) and decent kepab shops after a late night of boozing!
I reckon everyone away from home sometimes feels like that. And Cologne is great! (e.g. all the above I dearly miss, summer time is awesome, the bars and cafes, close to Holland i.e. therefore the sea...)

I'm so homesick, it's affecting my health, sanity and marriage and not so much in that order. The closer our return is, the worse it gets. It's not that I hate Germany, just the situation and what it's put us through. Selfish, probably. Real, painful and the only way to end the pain is to return.

Desperately homesick for at least ten years. I don't buy all this "make anyplace your home" stuff. It may work for someone else, but not for me. I'm sick of this country.

When I moved to Germany the first time round, I was homesick alot...then I moved back home thinking it would fix the homesickness and found that the feeling I had wasn't as much homesickness as it was missing a certain phase of my life...everytime I was feeling homesick, I had this wonderful vision of fun times I'd had in London in my head and how great it was, it was like all the good nights out and fun days etc. were compressed into one and it felt like it had been that way ALL the time (rather than once a month, which was the reality)...it didn't fix the problem at all, because that phase was over and those friends were mostly acquaintances who I couldn't click with anymore...so I became homesick for Germany and so here I am again...but this time I realise that there are always things I'm going to miss, regardless of where I am - because that's what happens to you when you have lived in more than one country...or even city as they can sometimes be worlds apart too...

Hello Elaine,
I have just read your mail and as I have only just found the Toytown website I wanted to ask how are things now?? Feeling any more settled? I too feel homesick and have been here in Bonn for over a year. I think isolation is the worst part for me but having found Toytown I am hoping that I will be able to make contact with some good people. I am keen to meet other people to share experiences and enjoy life here. We are all in the same boat and can help each other:))
Enjoy the beautiful weather today.

Hey Elaine,
Hang in there. I've had countless moments where I searched online for plane tix back home and started packing my stuff. I too miss the normal everyday stuff, I just wanna sit in my mom's kitchen and have a coffee. The longer I'm here though, the more this becomes home, my friends and support network here become family. Reach out to people around you and join clubs/churches whatever you can!! Now I get homesick when I go back to the states. And don't forget, wherever you go, there you are. Changing locations won't change your internal disposition. Maybe this is a good opportunity to try something completely different in a new environment? Just try to make the best of it, and don't give up hope.

I was ok until I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and was treated like S**t. Screamed at in Germany all the time by people who told me in perfect English that they spoke English but "Your in Germany and I don't get paid extra to speak English". Since I was discharged all I have wanted to do is go home.

I agree with Alittlegreen. I don't get homesick though, but it annoys me when some things are going the way that the Germans do, which is mostly so much easier in my own country. Other than that, I am never homesick,

Well I have not been able to learn German much which is probably part of the problem. So I am stuck. Since I have been sick I have not been able to go out. Now I have missed the start of German in schools like Volkschule (sp?) so I am screwed for another 3 months. One agency in the area teaches German classes and German integration but you must know German to attend...does that make sense?

Feb 23 2008, 12:24 am
I know alot of people that cannot speak the language, have their sky satelite and are not homesick at all! That is fine, but those people have not integrated at all... any my question to those that are NEVER homesick, if you are not homesick, and will live here for many years more, are you willing to give up your passport of your home nation... to me NEVER being homesick is a sign that your HATE your home land, and want nothing to do with it... well, then in my opinion, and yeah, its just my thoughts (as I am homesick constantly) are you willing to sacrifice your patriatism to your homeland for it? If not, then you do suffer Homesickness, so I have a hard time believing those that say they are NEVER homesick. Just food for thought!

With the greatest respect - that is utter drivel. I think it depends on what sort of a person you are. There are certainly things about the UK that I miss. Today a friend of mine popped in and brought me some Walkers Ready Salted crisps. It was great to have some crisps that just taste of potato and salt and not of 'Paprika'. Did I start pining for England? No.
Why?
Well - I carry a piece of England around in my heart/soul/psyche always - I don't need to be there to know that. I also feel that I am a 'Weltbürger', a citizen of the world.
I enjoy living in Cologne. I also spent some time in the Ukraine and really got to appreciate the people and the differences in the way things are done over there. I would have been happy staying. I honestly believe that I could settle almost anywhere and would relish the differences to how things are done in the UK. That does not mean that I hate England. The town and surrounding villages where I grew up in England are still special to me, because of my childhood memories. Cologne is special to me because of the last few years I have spent here. Nikolaev is special to me because although I only spent six weeks there - I started to feel at home - I started to get recognized by neighbours and shopkeepers and felt welcomed. If you are the sort of person (like me) who can see positive things in every country, who loves watching people and learning about foreign lands (not as a tourist - visiting the sights - but experiencing real life). Does that mean you hate any of the lands you left behind? If in 10 years I am living in France or Italy or Russia or new Zealand or anywhere, and feeling too happy and delighted by life to experience longing for the past... that doesn't mean I hate England or Germany or any other place I have left.

( ear perking up!) REAL has rice krispy treats??

Ohh yes I do miss grits, MMMM MMMMM I was raised in the south after all. I have one small box of grits ( I think 8 packets) and I have been rationing them since march.. I have such a long list that I had to learn to make on my own ... beignets, ( they taste better in new orleans at cafe du monde) I bought the whole collection of top secrets recipe cook books.. so I can now recreate things like chilli's Salsa.. tony romas bbq sauce.. the biscuts from KFC .. I keep hoping my sister will pack my mom or grandmother in a box because I can recreate their recipes but you know it would be great to have either one puttering around my kitchen making tamales and enchiladeas... I think it's funny sometimes the things you miss.
I am working my way to new favorites here I have hit up just about every mexican place in cologne. I think I had a very good bowl of wanton soup at a thai place yesterday ( could have been ordinary but the company I was with was EXCEPTIONAL so you never know! I will try it on my own and let you know if it is as good as it was yesterday!)
I actually have to say I have met some really nice people on Toytown.. we have become quite the little gang ( kisses)
My home sickness comes in waves.. More so when I have a bad day and I miss my family.. you never realize how close you are to your Family and friends until you have a bad day and they are like 3000 miles away!
