Hi!

Since you mentioned Mainz, I am surprised no one has brought up the Zimmerman's store in Mainz Kastel.

In the US, I would regularly shop a store call Big Lots that would have all kinds of great deals on all kinds of close-out merchandise. I liken Zimmerman's to a German Big Lots. Lawn furniture, bicycles, housewares, toys, home decor, clothing, shoes, canned goods, candy and snack foods, and at Zimmerman's, even frozen foods and wines. There is a vendor selling fresh produce right outside the front door, too, so you can take care of a lot of your shopping at this one location. (Can't buy milk or eggs, etc. however.)

I apologize for not knowing the street address, but it's just a block or two off 455 just past Otto Sur Ring as you're heading toward Mainz. (This is the intersection with the Metro on one corner, opposite a Kentucky Fried Chicken on the other corner.) As you're heading toward Mainz on 455, about a block past the KFC, you'll see a sign on your left pointing to Zimmerman's. (Alongside a small soccer complex.) Once you turn at that sign, take your first left after that, and Zimmerman's is on the right. (The place is within walking distance of Brauhaus Castel restaurant and the Mainz-Kastel US Army facility.)

If I needed inexpensive, dishes, glassware and basic kitchen items, fast, I'd start there before I'd go to IKEA. Great for people moving into their first/new apartment. (Note: They also have linens for your table or your bed, curtains, fabrics for home projects, etc. One of my favorite haunts.)
