Melisa Simo
Hello!

I will be there mainly for business (for the Toy Fair), but I want to try to fit in some fun, too! There are a couple of things I'd like to do: Discuss with a non-EU citizen about moving to Germany, try to see the Super Bowl, check out the non-tourist attractions (any suggestions?), and last, but not least, eat and drink well. Can anyone help a girl out?

About me: 26yo, presently residing in Tucson, AZ, USA. My musical tastes are best described as "indie". Any concert or club recommendations would be appreciated. I love movies, so how's about a theater with movies with english? Hmmm... what else? Oh! Does anyone know where there is a comic book shop?

If anyone is going out, I'd like to tag along, if that's ok!

I think that's it.

Thanks!
Melisa

Hi There

Nuremberg is a great place and would highly recomend the DocuZentrum for a visit. It will take about 3 hours if you listen to all of the information.
Would suggest joining the curry night to meet with some local expats. (Although I have not had the chance to join)
For somelocal food with an intersting atmosphere and reasonable beer try: Barfusser If you want to try a selection of regional beers from smaller breweries then I would suggest Landbierparadies Another place to try for local food is Nassauer Keller it is central and very interesting location.

PM me if you would like some other suggestions.

Hey Melisa!

I hope you get this message in time; I don't check the forums here every day, so I apologize if this gets to you a little late.

I just moved to Nuremberg from the US myself just short of two weeks ago, but visited the area several times before moving, so I know it a little already.

We were discussing where to watch the Super Bowl around town last "Curry Thursday" (which was my first one to attend)... best bet is probably going to be at one of the Irish pubs.

Upcoming.org doesn't have much in the way of Nuremberg, but it does have quite a few in Bavaria, mostly in Munich:
http://upcoming.yahoo.com/search/?category...i6BzuC&rt=0
There is the Bavaria ticket which covers rount-trip train and city transportation for 28€ for up to 5 people anywhere within Bavaria. Its limitation is that you have to stick to the regional trains, which means no quick ICE (inner-city express) trains (unless there's a strike at the time and those are the only things running). It's normally around an hour or so to Munich via ICE, and about 1.5 - 2 times that on the regional trains, iirc.

Alternatively, you can search public events using Google calendar:
http://www.google.com/calendar/events?q=-t...onth&page=c
This will result in a calendar listing all public events Google knows about that are happening in the area (that are not daily tours, which flood the calendar ordinarily).

There are probably some other events in Nuremberg sources out there on the Internet too, but I haven't found any yet.

The Roxy is a foreign language cinema. (In this case, it's usually English films from the US which are foreign.)

Other English movie options:
  • You can use the US iTunes store just fine, including the recently announced iTunes movie rentals. (Provided you have a computer and Internet access.)
  • There are some 24 hour DVD rentals. You'll need a European DVD player and TV to use them, however, from what I understand, many contain English as an additional audio track.
  • Moving mailing businesses, sort of similar to Netflix exist here in Europe as well. I don't remember exactly what they're named, however.

Things to see and do in Nuremberg (some of these are a quite bit touristy as I haven't been around here long enough to find the non-touristy places, but most of these are only found in Nuremberg):
  • Albrecht Dürer's house
  • Spielzeugmuseum (Toy museum) ...since you're coming here for the toy fair, you might want to check it out
  • the very strange sculptures & fountains around town
  • Tiergarten (zoo), home of the now famous polar bear mother who neglected her children (and possibly ate one?)
  • aquarium
  • Reichsparteigelande (Nazi Party Rally Grounds)
  • Doku-Zentrum (Nazi museum)
  • Germanisches Nationalmuseum (German Naitonal Museum)
  • dungeons
  • Kaiserburg (the castle)
  • beergardens! ...although these are better during warmer weather smile.gif

Ultra Comix is a comic shop in the center of Nurembeg.

As far as food is concerned, I know of a few places to eat and get a drink at around town, but I'm vegetarian, so my list is probably a little skewed. wink.gif

I'd be up for hanging out. Feel free to message me.

www.plaerrer.de
www.doppelpunkt.de

Although those are both in German, between them you'll pick up everything thats going on in or around Nuremberg. To be honest, who needs to translate listings like ""Girls Club", Mädels-Party mit Glamour-Lounge, Topless Boys, Styling for free und weitere Specials" ;-)

Plärrer and Prinz are the two main listings magazines around here and cost something like two or three euros for a month. Dopplepunkt is a freebee and youll have to look for it in bars. For some historic reason it goes from the 15th of each month to the 15th of the next, rather than just dealing with a month.

If you want to watch ludicruously dressed teens making fools of themselves, Cinema Bizarre are playing at Hirsch tonight ;-)

Hi Melisa,

as Garrett already suggested, you should definitely join our curry night get-together Thursday eve at the Taj Mahal. Who knows, we might hit an Irish bar afterwards.

Also, I'd be up for hanging out after work or on the weekend. I moved to Nuremberg the end of last year, so I'm still in the exploring-and-discovering-new-places-and-things-to-do phase. We should hang out with Garrett. He's super nice and it sounds like he knows his way around town quite well already.

I'm off work this week and plan on doing the Kaiserburg tour either Thursday or Friday afternoon. I know, I know, that's definitely a touristy thing to do. But I can't live in Nuremberg and not have seen the castle from the inside. If you feel like joining me, let me know.
