i got my last dog from a pet shelter and he was the best dog i've ever owned. i miss him sooooo much... he had to stay state-side sad.gif

First decide what particular breed you want. They have very different personalities. Do you want a sedate (weiner dog) or an active dog (JRT)? How soon do you imagine getting one? Are you sure that you actually want one? Seriously, lots of people soon decide that they wish that they hadn't. I have two JRTs, very active and family friendly. smile.gif
Floss
Yeah - I'm really sure - I have had dogs all my life - mainly golden retrievers and a couple of rescue dogs (mixed breed).

I would like to know where I can go and speak to breeders or at the rescue home so that I can ensure the dogs temperament as far as possible.

my best dog ever was also from the pound. He was a mixture between a border collie and a golden lab. Most intelligent dog ever but untirable so needed plenty of excercise.

I would always recommend mixed-breed dogs and also dogs from the pound.

Breeders outside Munich will be far cheaper than those close in. JRTs can run 300-2000 depending on papers and breeders.
Check the animal shelter, but then you will not know the background of the dog. Many here are imported from outside the country believe it or not.

In the local papers you will usually find someone selling pups without papers and nicely priced. At least then you can meet the owners, the parent(s), and have a better feel for the eventual size and personality of the dog.

There is a puppy test guide for personality traits to be found on the internet. It worked with ours. smile.gif

I say go to the pound. both my dogs came from there and they were the most wonderful creatures ever. So full of love. My auntie always goes for pedigrees and my uncle breeds show boxers, and they may look pretty but they're not a match for a mongrel personality wise.

Plus, I could never bring myself to pay 300 € for a dog when there are so many in desperate need of love in the pound.

Go to the pound, all 3 of my dogs came from there, and they are the greatest dogs ever. Toy fox terrier, Chiuahua collie mix, and something medium and black, never got around to learning what he is. BEWARE CAUTION WARNING DANGER! You can get addicted to the pound, with all the puppies that want you to want them and then you want to rescue all of them, but you can't, not matter how much you want to. Be strong, be aggressive. BREAK!
Hellcat
although both of our dogs are purebred, i agree that the pound is the best. i will never have another purebred dog. don't get me wrong, our dogs are great and extremely intelligent (an australian cattle dog and a border collie), but they have been bred to have a job and without a job they're completely nuts. the cattle dog is ridiculously obsessed with frisbees and the border collie has a crazy fascination with shadows and flashlights. i know that doesn't sound that bad, but their minds can only focus on one thing since it's in their bredding. a mutt, on the other hand, isn't specialized and i think that makes a better dog.

also, i think mutts seem less susceptible to disease and health problems. our cattle dog is only 4 years old and he has slight hip dysplasia, epilepsy and a possible nasal tumor. he's happy, spoiled rotten and doing fine with my parents now though...thankfully. smile.gif

@ Mbangura: that is sooooo true! my parents left me at home whenthey went to choose, and only took me once they were firmly set on a dog cos they knew I'd want to take every single one of em home! We took a beautiful tiny puppy, labrador/collie cross (we think, never did find out!) who grew up to be the most wonderful fluffy mutt ever, I loved that dog so much.
Point is, that even my Dad fell in love with every single animal there, especially a big rottweiler who jumped on him and started liking his face as soon as it saw him! So no matter how strong you think you are, it's such a hard thing to do, so yeah, be prepared!!

Thanks for all these replies - I appreciate it.

Does anyone know where any dog pounds are? I live near Freising so north of Munich is ideal but not necessary!

Thx

hi. was picking up our labrador henry today at the kennel and the proprietor, frau kufner, mentioned she has another lab who needs a home. she also has some miniature schnauzers. i know you are looking for a small to medium dog, but i have got to put in a plug for the labrador. they are wonderful, calm, friendly dogs. we love ours beyond all belief.

i rescued henry and it was the best thing i have done in my entire life. there is no need to ever buy a dog unless you are fixated on certain breed. a rescued dog knows you chose him and i think they appreciate it.

here's a link to the kennel in case you are interested.

There is one in Riem/Daglfing, close to the Daglfing horse-race center.

To get a puppy with papers from a serious breeder will cost u at minimum 600,00 up to €1.000,00 or more for the more seldom breeds.
There are a lot of “black sheeps it this business, especially in this area, cause it is close to the Cech border. If u get an offer for a puppy with papers for €300,00 don’t trust their story (i.g. “it is only a hobby or “ cant use this one for the breed). In this case u can be pretty sure it is something wrong with the pup, mostly smuggled from Cech republic or Poland with faked papers, without the necessarily injections and mostly ill to death.
Sorry that I am this negative, but I know pretty much about this topic and have personal experiences too. mad.gif

My recommendation, take one from the shelter, there are plenty “little souls, desperate looking for a good new home and u will have a friend for the rest of his/her live.

But there is no shelter in Freising and Erding, I know that cause I live in this area too. There are some private persons in this area who care for dogs, that other people had thrown away, kind a short-term-fostering. They always look for good new places, u can find the ads in the weekly (free) Freisinger Newspaper under “Tiermarkt.
Mostly they are related with the Tierschutzverein (association for the protection of animals) so be aware that they will ask u a lot of questions about you and your home. Probably u have to sign a contract for the dog and there are allowed to check the place where the dog will live from time to time.

@bobbyboy - don´t want to annoy u - but for me it looks like a factory where they produce dogs in different colours. And the do different breeds, Labs and Retriever, not a good sign too.

Geez, thats my longest post ever - seems that this topic hits me at an emotionally edge. ph34r.gif

yes, its like being adopted!

Thanks Rubber Duck

Thats really good advice. I will have a look in the weekly newspaper and see if I can't find a dog that needs a good home there.

Thanks again

I just got the sweetest puppy in the world (ok, maybe I'm biased) - I found the ad on Quoka - look under "tiere" and then "hunde" and then limit the search based on your postal code. This is actually a great website for everything - apartments, etc.

Also...

Welpen.de

Hundewelpen.de

are two good sites with links to breeders (Zuechter) all over Germany and Austria. Many of the breeders' sites are in English as well.

Hey all,

Could I post it here? Does anyone has experience to adopt puppy dog in Munich? How to do?
I really appreciate if you could tell me exact address to adopt and pay dog-tax and so on?

It's not money issue. I don't want to BUY my friend.
Thanks

It's easy.
Check out any of the "Tierheime" here in Munich and surroundings. Just Google "Tierheime München"
They will check out your circumstances. ie suitablility, marital status, location, space for a dog, knowledge of animals.
They also offer free courses on how to handle dogs.
Your dog will be given all the initial shots by the dog's home and you then have to look after the passport details and further shots yourself.
Have the dog barcoded (around €35,00) and then European travel is relatively simple.
The dog's home authorities will call on you unannounced annually to see that the animal is being well looked after.
Insurance is important and will cost around €150,00 annually.
Depending on the size and breed of the dog you can expect to pay around €100,00 annually for dog tax.
Then you get a tag for the dog's collar which must be visible on the dog's collar when you are away from home with the dog.
I'm sure you've already looked into food costs which are always turn out to be much higher than initially imagined.
When all that is done expect to have to invest about three hours a day with your dog, depending on size, but in return you will get 24 hours a day of love, loyalty and unbridled devotion.
You will have fewer therapy bills, the dog is your therapist, you will be healthier, you will meet a wide and interesting array of other dog owners and you will become a happy well-adjusted lady.
See my website for a page entirely given over to my doggie.
If you need any other help/advice, PM me.

edit: Oh yes, try NOT to buy a puppy. there are loads of doggies out there who need homes. Buying just encourages unscrupulous breeders.

Thanks for your information! So lovely answer. Especially, you are really early bird. smile.gif

I really need help because I know limitied German so far. I asked someone with dog about these information since I moved to Munich from Danmark 7 months ago. My major was medicine. I am working here and have enough patient with dog. I prefer big, kind(not fierce) and puppy dog. I wanna grow and play with him like a family. Please help me!

Just a reminder, if you can't own a dog you can consider sponsoring one at the tierheim. Details A visit to Tierheim München - animal shelter. smile.gif

Hi Golems,
I would highly recommend looking at any "Rescue Centres".
I am not sure which are IN Munich, but I live in the realms of Ebersberg region and there is a local "TierschutzVerein".

Tierschutzverein Ebersberg

In fact, if I'm allowed, I would like to say that along with a few like-minded people I run FUN auctions on Ebay once each month where ALL my proceeds are given to Tierschutzverein Ebersberg.
This is run under the banner of "MDCC" on Ebay.co.uk

Good luck in finding a new member of your family!

And when you finally do get just the right canine companion, golems, if you ever want, need or have to travel and can't take him/her or God forbid need to be hospitalized or have visitors with a dog allergy, you can bring him/her to my house for pampering, feeding, walking and overnighting. My children and I adore dogs and find that dog-sitting is a great family hobby (and offsets the enormous costs of renting a house in the middle of Munich with a fenced-in yard and pond *ouch*). Helping hands and a generous heart are just a pm away.

Good luck finding your new "best friend." Post a picture when you've succeeded.

Thanks you guys.
As you guys mentioned like that "there are loads of doggies out there who need homes." and "Rescue Centres"so on..., it means some people who are living Munich could abandon their family-dogs???!!!

ph34r.gif I can not believe it... sad.gif

awww! post pics when you have it! what kind? do you have a name yet? smile.gif may i play with it when you get it? smile.gif

i want a cat (or kitten) but i have to find someone who'll allow a cat to live with them for a few months since i cannot have it now (i'm too impatient to wait!)

back on subj- no clue what you need in germany. i know in the US you need proof of residency and you have to get approved (fill a form out stating how much you're willing to pay a year, your life style, experience with dogs, etc, etc then they make sure from what you wrote you match with the dog you want), valid gov't issued photo id, and you have to meet with the dog at least once if not a few other times, and there's something else, but i forgot what (at least that's what i needed for the Wisconsin Humane Society).
Showem
Actually, your subject doesn't say much. I honestly thought you were looking for a company, aka firm like Siemens or Kaufhof, to adopt a puppy, now I think it's a company for you to adopt a puppy from. But I'm still not sure if this is what you mean. I don't think company is a great choice of words.

I do believe there's a fair amount of information on Toytown about this if you search. Gotta get back to the footy right now.

Adopt a puppy!

I am a girl working here.
Since I did post it several months ago, so far, I was not able to adopt a puppy sad.gif
First, It could not work out in Rescue centers where I went to twice. I dont know why!
I would give him/her a warm home, that is all! Why is so complicated thing to adopt a puppy in Munich?

If you would have to leave your puppy here with any reason, please give me a shout, I dont care his/her breed. If I could not adopt a poppy, I would go to buy him/her in the dog shop. (I dont wanna buy my family. Although money is not big issue. )

Thanks in advance.

Lots of puppies available all around the Munich area!

Try your local animal shelter, or "Tierheim". You can google to find the nearest to you since many have an online presence of some sort.
travelingpac
Are you located in the States? There are animal shelters in every city. Or, go to www.petfinder.com and I think you can put in your location, etc and do a search of animals needing homes. Some are from shelters and others from rescue groups.
My friend calls it "puppy porn"... once you start looking you can't help but want to read every sad story. It is addictive. Good Luck and i hope you find a new friend.
