The German polar bear mania has now hit Munich. A 14-month-old, 90 kg female is joining Yoghi in Hellabrunn from her home in Italy, officials are hoping that they will breed successfully, adding another name to the growing list of polar bear cubs that are cute for a while and then turn into – well, not so cute grown-up polar bears.

The female bear is yet nameless, her keeper Helmut Kern is partial to the name Gianna as in Gianna Nannini, Italian pop star and music professor. Up to now, he says, the bear's only language is Italian but he is optimistic that she will soon understand Bavarian.

Although she is active, observant and curious she has been behaving like a spoiled brat, he continues. She is in solitary at the moment but will soon join 30-year-old Lisa who is to be her “surrogate Mommy and girlfriend”. Yoghi is to join them later, Kern is looking forward to Yoghi and Lisa playing with their new baby.
