€1.3 billion federal grant to Bavarian S-Bahns

Munich and Nuremberg to benefit

Guy
A total of 1.3 billion* Euros has been earmarked by the Federal Transport Ministry for extension work to Bavaria's S-Bahn systems. The money is broken down to provide support for extending the Munich S2 from Erding to the airport, building a 2nd tunnel under central Munich (2. Stammstrecke), upgrading the Munich S8 between Pasing and Buchenau, extending the Munich S7 from Wolfratshausen to Geretsried and (providing a non-Munich angle) a new S-Bahn between Nuremberg and Forchheim. The money is in addition to, not instead of, a further €1 billion provided each year for maintenance costs.

About F*#*@#@ Time!!! The S2 ext. has only been on the books for the last 10 years...

Take that Transrapid Fanboys!! Look's like y'all lost some state funding/support...

I found an overview of the S2, RB,RE Expansion. The 3 POI's are new stations...

Isn't the line via Oberhumm a possible but more expensive) alternative to the the Freising-Airport spur?

WOO-HOO!

Logical public transport expenditure. Although I'd still like to have seen the rapid service intro'd on the S1 and S8 lines like what they does in Japan, and strangle the Transrapid project completely.

what will be the purpose or path of the 2nd tunnel under Munich?

DB sponsored raves.

Increase capacity. At the moment, they can't get 'em through fast enough during the rush hour.

I think it has been on & off for more than 10 years. I have been in Erding that long and it was old plans when I arrived. As far as I can tell the Erding-Airport link has been on & off for nearly 20 years.

The real issue is :- will this be dropped (again) and, if it goes ahead, when?

I guess the transrapid people will not like it and try to kill it because it takes away some of the benefits of their case!!

@SIN
If/when the Erding ext. gets built, you will have a direct Munich-Airport line via Regional Express instead of the slower S-Bahn.
It would stop in Ost Bahnhof, Markt schwaben and Erding-Nord before heading to the airport. Such a service would take about
20-25min Ostbahnhof to Airport.

Here is a map of the planned expansion (PDF) Its kinda old but still gives you a general overview of the Erding ext.

Changes to Note:
-----------------------
* The plan for the Aufhausen/Walpertskirchen line has been canceled. Instead The Walpertskirchen curve, will pick-up a 2nd turn (From Markt Schwaben<->Erding/Airport)
* The Existing single track/no power line Markt Schwaben/Dorfen will be upgraded to Dualtrack and electrified.
* The Existing single track from Markt Schwaben to Aufhausen will be upgraded to Dualtrack.

The Map also show the S7 being extended past Geretsreid to Geretsreid-Sud.

The plan for the 2nd Stammstreke can be found here

Will they release an official plan in the near future? I live outside of Moosburg, and work near Aufhausen, so an extension in that direction would be great. I retire in 2026, so it may be too late for me though

They could add the Airport spur and then have the S2 go up thru Freising and on to Moosburg. This would allow them to use the existing track from Pulling to Moosburg, reducing the overall cost. The €1.3 billion allocation sounds like a large amount, but I am sure that laying track is expensive, and I read that the second tunnel is going to cost €900million.

Just a quick update to the S2 ext. news..

Since this story was released 2 of the old narrow (2 track) fly over bridges have been or are in the process of being
replaced with bridges wide enough for 4 tracks. Some stations are getting updated with more modern equip. and
are being retrofitted for wheelchair access. Plans are currently in the works to completely remove and/or rebuild 3
stations to accommodate 4 (Currently 2) and 2 tracks (Currently 1)...

Unfortunately it looks like Ken will be long retired before its all done..

They're also working on the Nuremburg S-Bahn this summer; one of the S-Bahn lines is being extended all the way to Bamberg, a full 65 kilometres distant. I'm not too sure what the practical implications of this will be (it's an existing RE/RB route), but if it means more trains with which to access Franconia's breweries from, then great.
