Hi Folks,

what happened to WOM??? Is it closed for good, where am I going to buy CDs now sad.gif

AH

nilpferd
yeah, it closed about a month ago I think...sure they said something about it going over to the web, but I've googled it and can't find anything.

Now you mention it, i've never seen any other music stores in town (however I am often in my own little world, so not surprising) do they not have Virgin Megastore or sth like that here?
Topsy
buy them at Müller, they are cheaper, or at Saturn Hansa, or at Amazon

I was shocked that they had gone, but they were a bit overpriced, so I doubt they'll be missed that much
Elfenstar
i never went to WOM unless I wanted to get some rare or rarely distributed music or to choose from a large international selection. as a result, i ended up paying out the a*s for a CD from WOM. terribly expensive. but yeah, i noticed they were gone too. very sneaky departure.

and like mentioned, there are other alternatives like saturn or media markt, or yeah, via amazon.
tench
Yeah, saturn's usually a good bet.

Plus they've reorganised the shop near karlsplatz and have now got about 100 million DVDs downstairs..
3 Lions
Media Markt is also pretty good.
grtho
WOM was for out of town kiddies who came in to Munich from Erding on a Saturday on their dad's spare tractor. No one from Munich ever really shoppped there.
Topsy
I'm quite surprised that nobody else has mentioned Müller - it's the cheapest place for CDs. They don't have as large a range as Saturn, but they have better prices for what they have.
Agree also with tench regarding Saturn at Karlsplatz - the whole of downstairs is now devoted to CD's and DVD's, looks like they will have a huge selection. I was in there last week and half of the shelves were still empty, but I guess they've filled them up by now.

Müller would be cheap if I didn't suffer from the magnetic pull of the cosmetics/cleaning products/shampoo/random Drogerie items on the way to it. sad.gif
Saturn Theresienhöhe is good though but I am generally lazy and use Amazon mostly (got that Depeche Mode remix album on pre-order, well, it is frankly just Basildon-tastic ha ha).

Hey... Not everybody who lives in Erding Has Tractors...

In fact there arn't that many left.. Most of the ones you do see only went to erding
because of the Grain Storage House (now Gone)..

As for where to get CD's...

You've got
2+ saturns
2+ Media Markts
Ebay
Amazon

And tons of others... Take your pick

So who's going to sell the 0.25c copies of 'Candle in the wind' by Elton John now? sad.gif
nilpferd
they should pay YOU to take that!! laugh.gif
Darkknight
Or just Download it of the net or your local P2P network...
YorkshireLad6
WOM took a dive in summer and went broke. They were badly affected by the insolvency of EFA - one of the largest German Indie music production companies, and lost support of their parent company, Karstadt-Quelle, who since announced major cutbacks themselves...

Funny you should mention that. Fret not 3Lions!! I saw a display for them in the new downstairs dept in saturn.. Maybe they bought their stock from WOM? biggrin.gif
UrbanAngel
Don't use Amazon! They're so over-priced what with the P&P on top of the prices... use www.play.com . The CDs are cheaper, and there is no P&P delivery charge to Germany. Takes ca 3-4 days to deliver, but can take longer sometimes. They do DVDs and comp games too.

Where is Müller? Although after proving I'm useless at resisting temptation at Saturn I should probably avoid it wink.gif
Topsy
There are two that I know of: one at Hauptbahnhof and one on Tal.
It's a Drogeriemarkt downstairs, and they have a floor of CD's & DVD's upstairs.
profundo
Müller is on Tal. (Think "Tal- strasse" if that helps, but there is no 'strasse' part.) Tal is just east of Marienplatz and past the McDonalds/Burger King and on the north side of the street.

Edit. Topsy beat me.
latecomer
there are a few other müller places around that have the CD section (like schleissheimer str.) but the one on tal is ace and has everything. plus millions of DVDs.

ps: on DVDs, watch out for "Original mit Untertitel - nicht ausblendbar" coz they have subtitles in german that you can't get rid of. not many DVDs have it but enough do to make it worth checking.

fyi, I noticed that there's a small WOM department at Karstadt Oberpollinger near Karlstor. It's on the 2nd floor, near an espresso shop and the hairdressers. I didn't have time to check out their stock or prices, but maybe someone else has already shopped there?
SleeplessInMunich
Yeah, I found that place a couple of weeks ago as well but didn't bother to look around it.

Resonanzschallplattenon the isar (auenstr. 4 80469 München - round the corner from frauenhoferstrasse) is very good for indie/punk/underground releases, as is Optimal (kolloseumstrasse 6 80469 - round the corner from the other end of frauenhoferstrasse).

not cheap, but great selections and theyll get you what you want if you ask.
NOFXmike
Optimal is absolute SHIT for punk, not sure on indie/underground. I'll have to check out Resonanzschallplatten...

...but just in case someone's looking for Punk, don't go to Optimal unless you want a Ramones 7", that's about all they got.

(if anyone has other suggestions for a place that has more than 5 CD's of punk, particularly local punk, let me know, thanks)
berny
i take it all back.
Lavender Rain
I just returned from the states and this seems to be the trend there as two major music stores closed in Chicago. The reason is people are buying their music online or downloading it from online sites.
GreenTea
I was in the WOM section at Karstadt Oberpollinger a few weeks ago. It's not huge like Saturn just across the street, so the selection is limited, but maybe worth a look in if you happen to be passing by. Prices - didn't really pay a lot of attention, but they did have a fair-sized section of good stuff on special offer - 3 CD's for 15 Euros, or about (I think) 7 Euros individually.

There's also a CD section in Karstadt at Muenchner Freiheit, on the 4th floor. Don't know if it's also associated with WOM, but they have the free WOM monthly magazine (CD reviews, tour dates n' stuff), and they also do the 3-CDs-for-15-Euros thing. Worth a look in now and then just to see if you can pick up some good stuff cheap.

Ok, I went past this place today. I'd been there before, just didn't recognize the name. They're only open in the late afternoon-evening...so almost never when I'm in the area.

However, it is a pretty decent record store...all kinds of RANDOM stuff...fun for browsing. Their punk selection isn't great, but all-around, they have as much as they can fit in there.

I'll never have as good of a record store as I'm used to back home: Extreme Noise, but well...I find it hard to believe this is the best in town. Basically I have to order everything online. sad.gif
Twain Harte
Oh WoW, That's where I'd buy CDs I could no longer get in the States.
