Ambers Mum
Jan 27 2008, 4:30 pm
My husband, 1 year old son and 3 year old daughter are new to the country from Australia. We have just found a house in Geisenfeld close to
Ingolstadt (North of Munich) and an interested in looking for a playgroup/Mum's group locally. I am finding it a little daunting not speaking the language and my daughter is already starved for child company. I'm sure as my German improves, things will get easier and I will meet more people but it would be lovely for me to speak with someone without a German phrase book/hand gestures, etc.
Hope that someone can help me with guidance on how to find a
playgroup or enrolling my daughter in a
kindergarten.
Heidi
Welcome to Toytown!
Daunting, you say? Don't worry, we've all been there.
On the subject of kindergartens, perhaps you could start with this thread:
German kindergartens in Munich - how to apply. I know you're not in Munich but some of the information will be relevant, plus there are other useful links in some of the posts. Do use the search function (upper right corner), TT has information on just about everything under the sun.
Good luck!

Hi Heidi
I realise your message has been up for a while, but I have only just discovered this section of Toytown, used to look on the Munich section but we are quite a way out of Munich and a lot of it didn't apply to us...
I have been in Germany 10 months, moved here with my husband's job, but he is from near Ingolstadt originally (I am from the UK). We now live about 40 mins south of you, but drive through Geisenfeld on the way to my in-laws - am going to be taking my kids there every couple of weeks from now on, as we are going to have a "mum's night off" arrangement every few weeks - woo hoo! LOL
Anyway, I have a 2 and a half year old daughter, who is pretty grown up for her age and would love a 3 year old English speaking playmate every now and then - not a playgroup of course, but maybe we could arrange to meet up in a playground or beer garden with playground sometime, and if it seems likely to work we could meet for the girls to play in the mornings, before I carry on to take the children (also have a 6 month old son) to their grandparents, every 2 or 3 weeks, if the timing works out for you etc etc... You could reply on here, or PM me, if you are interested.
I did set up an English speaking playgroup where I live (Reichertshausen) but have canceled it now as we are too far out and there just wasn't quite enough interest to ensure enough people turning up every week - would have been too far out for you anyway. We will be continuing to meet on an ad hoc basis, if you are ever interested in coming out this way for a one off/ occassional meet up of mums/ families and pre-school age kids. I believe there is an English speaking playgroup in Ingolstadt, but don't know any more than that.
Hope you and your daughter are all settled in by now
Hilary
