Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to the forums, and I've been in germany a year. I'm living in a small town south of Cologne, so I want to make it for the St. Patty's Day bar crawl, should be lots of fun, I only know of a couple (read: 2) native English speakers in my town b/c we're an international university, so it'd be really great to meet more :-)

o right, I'm from the US, NJ to be genau

Hi All

Moved to Cologne, at least just outside (Bruhl) with hubby's job, been here since end Jan. Struggling with schools, language, shopping and much more... At least I've got SKY. Beginning to feel like a hermit though... Need some english bods to keep me sane... biggrin.gif

Hello and Welcome!
I am Elaine
trippdigital
Hi all. I'm a 29 year-old American guy who just moved to Cologne from Berlin a few months back. I wouldn't mind making some new friends here. I speak good German. I like watching movies, going to concerts, and playing/watching American sports. If anyone here would like to get together and play some ball (base-, basket-, or foot-) let me know. Or if anyone would just like to hang out, we could do that too.
Lenou
@dge464 and trippdigital: feel free to come along on St Patrick's day! ;-)
spillerkoln
@dge464 and trippdigital: welcome to Köln and Toytown. Do come along on paddys day or dge464 there is a girls night out being planned also! (sorry tripp, im the only guy allowed for technical reasons..)
Holly Golightly
Hi Everyone,
I’m from Serbia, so not a native English speaker, but I’m doing my best. Just came from US, currently in Franconia, but my husband and I planed to relocate to Koeln in September. I found this site at the recommendation of a friend. So since I know only few words in German, hope I could practice my English, get some info about the city and maybe get to know some of you when I come there.
Mirjana

See you in September.
moleculo
Hallo!

I am somewhat new to the Cologne area: been here since late April to work with Bayer from my previous appointment in New Haven, Connecticut, US. This is somewhat of a homecoming as I moved to the US from Spain (my home country) about 11 years ago, and it is only now that I have had the chance to come back to Europe to live and work (hopefully in a permanent manner!). As for hobbys, I am very fond of cinema (both classical as well as modern Hollywood), music (also between classical instrumental and more modern stuff), reading and biking!

So, I look forward to meeting some of you!

Best,
Moleculo.
Lenou
Hi Moleculo,
Welcome to Cologne and to the german Bayer world!!
Which division of Bayer are you working for?
Englishmanincologne
I bet hes a chemist!!!
champigons!
moleculo
yes, yes... chemist indeed!
Lenou: I work with CropScience; are you with Bayer as well?
Lenou
Yep! MaterialScience !
Englishmanincologne
should be called www.toytownbayer.com!
Englishmanincologne
Im with Bayer too!
Anyone else!!
Cota
I can see Bayer from where I work across the river at Ford....does that count?
moleculo
Cool! CropScience is all in Monheim, and I only travel to Leverkusen to go to the "Sprache Zentrum" for german lessons... however, I do know some people in MaterialScience... I guess it's no wonder taking into account the size of the company, right?
Lenou
yes, there should be a toytownbayer forum!!
so many people go to the sprachzentrum in leverkusen!! I bet we know the same people!! ;-)
Shiramargaret
Hi all! I'm new in Cologne, my boyfriend and I just moved here two days ago from the US. I'm an American and he's French Canadian. He's working at the University of Cologne, and I'm still in the process of finding work. Hope to meet some of you in person soon, it looks like lots of fun events are scheduled through this site!
konrad
Hello everyone! I just moved to Cologne from the US, working for Ford. Like Moleculo, this is a homecoming for me (to Europe at least) after 17 years across the Atlantic.

Hobbies: Sports (soccer and racquet sports mainly). If anyone knows where I can play some casual or small side soccer here, please let me know smile.gif

Regards,

Konrad
moleculo
welcome back Konrad! in case you have not seen it, there is another thread about pick up soccer (Football really!) games on Sundays.
konrad
Thanks! I posted there as well.

Hey all,

I'm a newbie - fresh from Chicago less than two weeks ago. I live around Barbarossaplatz, am currently on a quest to sample all kinds of Kölsch, oh, and master the German language. I am a huge film nerd, so hit me up if you are too! (that is... stuffy classic/european/art film nerd, not Star Wars film nerd... just to qualify, not to judge smile.gif ) Additionally, I really dig haute cuisine, though I am totally poor/jobless currently... but I could probably be convinced if anyone wants a tasting menu cohort!

I'd also be really interested in a German tandem partner if there are any Germans on here who want to trade hip slang and even hipper grammar rules smile.gif

Cate
moleculo
Welcome Cate! I actually did part of my studies in Ann Arbor (and incidentally ended up spending a lot of time there), so I consider that part of the world where you come from a bit like home as well! Also, I am glad to hear that u are a movie's nerd because so am I, and, frankly, the Cologne scene is quite interesting from that point of view... check out the online magazine choices.de for instance...
rachelfi.me
Hey all, I just discovered this website! It looks like just what I need, as my one of my roommates just moved back to pairs and my other is gone for a whole week (I live in a WG). I plan to go to the BBQ tomorrow(I'm very interested to see if it will be like American BBQs back home!) and I hope to meet many of you there. I live right next to the Volksgarten so that is REALLY conveniant for me!

I heard talk of a plan B if it rains but so far haven't seen any specifics... has there been any?

I'm an intern at TÜV Rheinland. I like my coworkers but I see them 9 hours a day and I would like to meet some new people!

Last night I got all prettied up and went to Omega, the only consistantly good dance club I've been to so far (ok, the second one I've been to) and I had a great time, but I'd love to meet some people who go clubbing often and know some fun places.

Also, anyone been to that literature cafe? Somewhere nearby the U-Bahn Haltestelle of... Kornerstrasse, I believe. I think it is so cozy! I think we should all meet there sometime next week or something. : )

also- anyone know of any good websites to watch american TV shows online? hulu won't play in Europe, those japanese ones take hours to load, aaand I forget the other one but it didn't work either. I often use YouTube but I was trying to watch the new episodes of Bones and they aren't there yet (or have already been removed).
Markofmot
Hey rachelfi.me!

I have not been here long and have been clubbing a few times, would like to meet some new people and explore the clubbing scene a bit more too. Can I join you? I have never been to Omega, but have been to a selection of others.

No news on American chanels, as I am from New Zealand, but I would also like to see some Englsih chanels...Please keep me posted...

I like your interests, also would like to get out to a literature cafe'. Won't be at the BBQ today as I have to meet some friends in Dusseldorf.

Cheers,

Mark
rachelfi.me
hey mark!

sorry, call me Rachel. XD

I would love to go to NEW clubs but we can by all means go to more than one. How much are the door fees at the ones you go to? Omega is 5 euros.

Maybe we could meet up and go to the literature cafe sometime during the week? I hear Thursday everyone is doing that already but I don't know where, and the literature cafe has really nice food. I don't get off work until at least 6pm and I rather suspect 8pm might be a little late for a literature cafe, so maybe we'll have to do that Friday or something.

I can give you the links I currently have, which may or may not work in New Zealand. Message me if you're interested. : )

-goes to get ready for SUN and the BBQ! hooray!-
damoholmes
Hey Hey,
Damo is keen aswell count him in for some clubbing. The head is pretty sure from last night but im sure he will survive for next weekend.

Cheers

Btw rachael im from australia which is much better than new zealand wink.gif
rachelfi.me
ok how about friday night for clubbing? I vote we hit Omega for at least an hour but I'd be more than happy to visit other places.

everyone should post some good places and the cover charge to get in. maybe we could prefunk at my house before we went!

and there might be salsa dancing wednesday... it was vaguely discussed. if anyone wants to or knows more info let me know. I guess I could be the dancing co-ordinator. X)
damoholmes
alright well ill be keen depending on my work. i forget what days i got and times next week.
give me a message or call if you want? 015776237448.

Cheers Damo

Other places i dont mind are roseclub. small but good music 6euro entry. Bogan 2 near HBF great music but 8euro in and maybe 30min wait in line. and for free and until 7am we could always go to underground.

Hi everyone, I've been in Cologne 3 years and would like to meet people outside of work. Are there any groups that are for English and German speakers as I'd like to have the opportunity to speak a bit of German (well, I'll try!) I'm over 30 (just incase age matters!)
Markofmot
Hi Rach,

Appoligies for the late reply, trying to find a flat for next month has taken a high priority at the moment.

Ok, club prices range ae. Live music hall, on lischstraße. Ubarn I think is venloer strasse- Primarily a DJ'd club, with pop mix. Roxy is open from midnight to 7 in morning, which is right by rudolfplatz. Appolo is about 10€, r&b, techno and disco mix on friesenplatz.

Have you found out anything more on the literature cafe? I really would like to get on to one! Thursday isnt great for me either as I have training from 7 until 9..but I definately would like to get there some time soon.

Interested in the links, thanks smile.gif

Chow,

Mark

From New Zealand, but would also like to give my German a real intense work out...count me in! I gues its fine if you are above drinking age=my german always inproves past a few Kolsch!
rachelfi.me
nobody minds how old anyone else is, we all have a great time together. : )

and as far as my plans go, going out this week is off. :/ I have this REALLY bad cold and my boss sent me home three hours early today to sleep. even if I were better by friday, I wouldn't want to ruin it all by getting sick again.

I hope everyone has fun thursday at the coffee meeting and if anyone goes out friday(and you all should!) I hope you can tell me which clubs were better and why. X) then next week we can go to the creme de la creme! X)

I can't remember the name of the literature cafe but the name Ehrenfield pops to mind... no idea why. it's nearby the U-bahn stop Kornerstrasse...
gk08
Rachel, www.torrentz.com is good for US shows and uknova is great for uk ones. I saw that a group were meeting at a cafe btw rudolf and friesen this week...is that this group?
rachelfi.me
haha look at all that porn.

do you have to download the movie or can you watch it from the source?

and I don't know, I didn't read it that closely. XP

Hi All,

I have lived in Cologne for over 5 years, but have been a bit isolated - I work from my home office and was unfortunately working quite a lot. Happily that has changed and now I'm looking to go out and have a fun time.

For hobbies I like rock climbing, going out to see live music (especially jazzy electronic type of music) and travelling. I'm in a salsa class, but I won't count that as a hobby yet because I'm so bad at it.

Someone mentioned the literature cafe. That's in Ehrenfeld and is called Goldmund LiterturCafe (www.goldmundkoeln.de). It's a nice place with tasty cake and they have Stammtisches for a lot of languages.

Cheers
Dana
moleculo
welcome Dana! Goldmund looks really interesting...
rachelfi.me
Dana, I like you already!! Thanks for putting the name to the face, so to speak. I plan to have a hangout there sometime when I'm better. XP

Perhaps some of us would be interested in joining you for a salsa class or two... do there tend to be more girls than guys? I seem to recall a conversation where a guy was complaining he went out dancing but there were only couples and he didn't dance much, but maybe that was just bad luck or couple's night.

Rachel
dana_a
Hi! smile.gif

The class is mostly couples, but single people come and get matched up. We swap partners every 5-10 minutes, so it doesn't matter so much whether you have a partner or not. The only problem is when an odd number of people come. The last two weeks there were more men than women, so the guys had to take turns sitting out. It's really fun though!

Hopefully see you tomorrow!
rachelfi.me
ok well tell us more! where, what train would one take to get there, how much is it at the door, what time?
medicine man
hi i'd be up for dancing a little salsa at some point...i always wanted to learn that! but i'm a guy so i might have to take it in turns to spin a lady

also i have been here for 2 years and when i first arrived i had been repressed for a year finishing a long long thesis so you could say i have been out a little since then wink.gif

next friday my friend is dj'ing at a chilled place...some deep, easy listening minimal often complimented by filtered and tweaked classical indian intruments...check this out

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...endid=225296082

people are welcome to come along and join me if they like.
