Purple Muffin
Hi everyone,

At the meeting on Tuesday we decided on:

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. Here is the review from Amazon.

QUOTE
Mark Haddon's bitterly funny debut novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is a murder mystery of sorts--one told by an autistic version of Adrian Mole. Fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone is mathematically gifted and socially hopeless, raised in a working-class home by parents who can barely cope with their child's quirks. He takes everything that he sees (or is told) at face value, and is unable to sort out the strange behavior of his elders and peers.

Late one night, Christopher comes across his neighbor's poodle, Wellington, impaled on a garden fork. Wellington's owner finds him cradling her dead dog in his arms, and has him arrested. After spending a night in jail, Christopher resolves--against the objection of his father and neighbors--to discover just who has murdered Wellington. He is encouraged by Siobhan, a social worker at his school, to write a book about his investigations, and the result--quirkily illustrated, with each chapter given its own prime number--is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

As for a date I propose either Monday 25th or Wednesday 27th February. Thursday is out for me and Tuesday is not really ideal. We also need to decide ion a location. Supermacs has offered her place which is fine by me.
supermacs
Great choice of book! I can pass on the book to anyone who´d like to borrow it. We can have the session at my place, no prob., but the dates 25th/27th.feb don´t suit me, sorry. How about any time the week before or after (preferably not Wednesdays though)!
Buttercup
Hi!
That's a great book smile.gif
We'll be moving to Frankfurt on the 16th, and I'd love to join you!!!
I think I could realistically make it the week after rather than the week before, if that fits? smile.gif
jl8
Hi,

I just moved to Frankfurt, and I'd like to join the book club! The book sounds good. For the meetup, my schedule is quite flexible; late afternoon or evenings are fine with me.

Supermacs, I PMed you about borrowing the book smile.gif

I cannot make the week after and it is then already March though. The week before on 18th or 20th could work.

Otherwise I could to Tuesday 26th or Thursday 28th at an absolute push but only then if we can have it at my place again. I have a course close to home which finishes at 19:45.

Lets see what dates others can make and decide from there.
chucha
For me 18th or 20th would be better. Actually, any day that week is better the week after, but in any case it's manageable.

I guess, PupleMuffin will take care that we don't overlap with a curry night wink.gif
Purple Muffin
Well we can try and not overlap curry but not really a guarantee I suppose.

Ok how about we all suggest the dates we can make?

I can do any day apart from Thursday. Tuesday is not ideal but I can manage.

So what about Tuesday 26th then?

Supermacs is Wednesday definitely no go?
PMR2006
Hi - I am iffy about the 26th. I will know if I can make it on the 26th as it gets closer. I would definitely be able to make it on Feb. 27.
Buttercup
Smiles... The 26th, 27th, 28th are fine with me... The 20th is better than the 18th...
LOL...
supermacs
Im abroad from 21st. til 27.feb. All other dates can do...
Buttercup
Does that leave us with the 18th, 20th or 28th? Does the 29th work?
notred
Would be too late to sign up and join your book club?

Been in Frankfurt for nearly 2 years and have not come across a proper book club yet so would be delighted if I could meet up with you guys

(PS have read 'The Curious Incident of the Dog . . . . . ' and it is really good , highly recommend it

Any of the aforementioned dates are fine with me smile.gif
Cartooncat
Don't forget - the Curious Incident of the Dog is cheaper at Buch7 - the online bookshop which donates 50% of its profits to charity.
chucha
Not that I have anything against giving to charity, but I got mine on amazon for 7 euros, and this site offers it for 10.

Just started reading, and I really, really like it!
Buttercup
LOL - i WOULD read it... But I think my husband just packed it!!! rolleyes.gif
I read half of it ages ago before my flatmate dropped my old copy in the bath...
ohmy.gif
Maybe I'm not MEANT to read it??? blink.gif
Purple Muffin
Ok well I read mine on the train down to Austria last weekend so if anybody would like to borrow my copy you are welcome to if you promise to look after it tongue.gif

Yes everyone welcome the more the merrier and I think the 29th works but it is a Friday and also the day before I go off skiing again for a week so not ideal for me.
Purple Muffin
Does the 18th look like a possible then?
chucha
I can try to make it on the 18th, but we are going skiing that weekend and only coming back on Monday. Any other day that week is better, but if it's 18th for everyone else, I'll try to drive faster smile.gif
Purple Muffin
Or 19th??
supermacs
18th suits me perfect. 19th doesn´t really, sorry.
Purple Muffin
Lets go for the 18th then. chucha I hope you can make it. I know it is hard to find a date for everyone.

What does everyone else think of 18th?
Evanna
Sounds good to me. Just hope the book will have arrived by then, it's taking ages... mad.gif
Purple Muffin
Oh no! I could have lent you my copy - in fact still can if you want to start it. I read it in one sitting on the train.
jl8
18th is fine with me...
supermacs
Great, shall we set the date for the 18th? Would starting at 19:00 at my place suit everyone? Chucha it would be great if you could also make it. Best to send me a PM if you´re coming along and ill give you directions...
Purple Muffin
I probably cannot make it until 19:30 sorry.
Buttercup
I think I could do the 18th... 19.30 is good too... smile.gif
PMR2006
Hi - just returned from travelling and saw the next meeting is on the 18th. I already have something on that night but I am glad that I picked up this book - It's a good read. sad.gif Keep me posted on the next title.
Rilana
I would love to come along, does anybody have a copy I could borrow? I read fast...
supermacs
I gave my book to jl8, maybe he can pass it on to you before the week is out?
Rilana
Any luck? I leave for France Thursday so if there's any chance he's finished with it before then, that would be perfect!
Rilana
have located a copy so count me in biggrin.gif
supermacs
I just sent a PM to Purple Muffin, jl8, chuca, notred, evanna and rilana! Let me know if youre in buttercup. See you next monday, 19:30...

Keep me posted on the next title.

My next topic! Does anybody have any suggestions for the next topic? As before we'll pick it on the night of the next meeting but if anybody who cannot make it wants to make a suggestion? I quite fancy Chocolat by Joanne Harris but I always seem to be suggesting the books so if anyone else wants to speak up!
PMR2006
HI - Since I can't be at the next meeting, I wanted to throw out two different titles - either as the next choice or for some point in the future:

Middlesex by Jeffey Eugenides
The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai.

The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai.

This one gets my vote. In fact both of them do :-)
Purple Muffin
Hi all,

I am now a 'maybe' as have a lot of work on today and not sure what time I'll get out of the office... will let you know later biggrin.gif
Rilana
oh dear! Does not sounds promising.

So what's happening? Are we rescheduling?
supermacs
Nope. no rescheduling. see all those who can make it later on...
Evanna
Looks like I may not be able to make it either... sad.gif
Purple Muffin
QUOTE (Rilana @ Feb 18 2008, 2:18 pm) *
Are we rescheduling?

No absolutely no resheduling if I cannot make it then it will go on without me. I still have a few things to finish here before I go home so cannot say yet.
Purple Muffin
I cannot make it I am afraid. I just got through the door and would need to leave now to make it on time. I also have a bit of work to finish off here at home sad.gif

Sorry I feel bad cancelling so late but well all I can say is many people have done it to me on many occasions...

Hope you enjoy discussing the book. If you choose for next time my vote is The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. Also will be happy to host again in March biggrin.gif
supermacs
My thanks to the charming men who turned up yesterday evening and for the refreshing exchange of views. @ Gatecrasher: thx for cosmopolis, looks like a challenge alright. By the way I forgot to give you back your version of the Dog in the Nighttime!
chucha
I'm glad you had a good time, supermacs. Sorry I couldn't make it, but I had to come back by train, and sitting there for 7.5 hours was really too much, I was dog-tired.
At least, I got to read a good book, that I probably wouldn't buy if it wasn't for the book club smile.gif

So, next one? Did you decide on anything during this meeting?
Purple Muffin
Please please say you decided on a book. smile.gif

I don't think I could cope with people suggesting online. It is usually decided on the evening of the bookclub what book for next time biggrin.gif

Sorry again I couldn't make it but had so much to do.
Gatecrasher
@supermacs: Thanks for the grapes, the refreshing conversation and the valuable insight. You didn't forget to give me the book, don't worry - I left it on purpose wink.gif
PMR2006
I look forward to joining next time - Purple Muffin - if a book wasnt decided on last night - could we just go with The Inheritance of Loss for this time to keep it simple. I think an online discussion to decide both book and meeting date would push our next meeing into April by the time all would be settled. Anybody have thoughts on this?
supermacs
A book wasn´t decided on yesterday. Thx GC.

Since the last time we decided to choose a book online I got the biggest headache in the world I am refusing to have anything to do with an online discussion.

I would say go for the Inheritance of Loss as it was also a contender at the last meeting. I will ask the bookclub regulars what they think too. If anybody has any objections please say now biggrin.gif
