I am 25-year old male American-German. I live in Downtown Düsseldorf.

I went to Gymnasium here in Düsseldorf. If is there is anybody who is staying in Düsseldorf for quite some time, just give me a hint, we can go out often.
karina
Hi there!

I don't live in Düsseldorf but sometimes I like to go there and do fun stuff! :-)

This coming Wednesday for example, if you have time I'm planning on watching a movie at the CineStar. Check out the post on that.

If you're interested, come along! (so far there are 3 ppl in our group)

Karina

Hi, I´m American and am looking for new English speaking friends around the Düsseldorf area. I´m 35, male, very friendly, sincere and open. I enjoy going to the gym (maybe a training partner would be great), play the piano, do video editing and loves to cook. I sometimes hang-out in the Altstadt but it would be great to meet friendly guys to hang-out with. If you´re interested in chatting or simply hanging out, please do let me know. Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks,
Allan

ganon
Hi D-dorfers! smile.gif

I'm new to Düsseldorf too (arrived last saturday). 29/m from sunny Panama City/Panama.

I'll be traveling quite a bit, but whenever I'm in town I'll do my best to attend to the get-togethers.

If anyone is up for hanging out this saturday 15th, that would be cool. Maybe for drinks or a movie?

Cheers!
David591
Hi Everyone,

I moved to Duisburg just over a month ago and am currently working in Düsseldorf, but haven't really had the chance to meet any English people. I'm a big fan of English football and visit the Irish pub (s) quite regularly. If anyone fancies meeting up for a beer and watching some football, then drop me an e-mail. Aside from this, it would also be nice to get to know English people living in and around Düsseldorf, so please feel free to send me an e-mail or reply to my message.

It's not that hard. I'm native in D and i met loads of expats over the years, From aupairs to students and 'real' expats.
The scandinavian aupairs seem to have fix networks, though just drop by at some of the english/irish pubs in Düsseldorf.
They're typical for ex-pat crowds and Germans. Altstadt! Just find one to go if you'Re shy to go alone there and you'll meet tons of others.

Btw, i talked to a lone (north american) Girl 2 weeks ago @Schaukelstühlchen. But i have to admit i was too drunken to remember her name and her definite nationality. LOL.
Jeanie
I found the introductions thread! What fun, now I won't feel like an intruder. smile.gif

Will be moving to Düsseldorf in August, have managed to get a transfer within the same company I work for now (I'm a secretary so it's not that usual but I talked them into it) and am really looking forward to moving back to Germany. I'm Irish, have already managed to find a knitting group to join in when I arrive (Starbucks on Mittelstr. once a week in case anyone else is interested) and then remembered someone telling me about Toytown ages ago. It'll be good to get to know some other ex-pats - since I'm planning on this being a permanent move I'm not as bothered about trying to fit in with the natives as I was just after college. Look forward to getting to know you all. biggrin.gif

Hiya, im Carrie, 22yrs old, an will be moving to Düsseldorf in August. I ll be working in the ballet company there, and just wanted to meet some english speaking people to go out an have a good time with...cinema/meals/cocktails/gym/dancing whatever really...anyway if your interested let me know x
titus_ni
Hey Jeanie

greetings from a Northerner (Belfast) biggrin.gif

You'll find there's quite a few Irish bars in town (5 in Altstadt at moment cuz Bucks is closed).

As for the knitting circle, I'm often in that particular Starbucks, although usually only in the mornings, and never noticed any knitting going on laugh.gif
Jeanie
I've noticed them alright (have even been in Bucks and that was only a few weeks ago, when did they close?). There's another one (Sutton's maybe?) not in the Altstadt but not far from where I'll be living in Pempelfort - is that any good? But stop by Starbucks this evening just after six and you should definitely see some knitting. smile.gif
titus_ni
Bucks closed 2 or 3 Sundays ago. There's talk of them maybe reopening in a month or two.

There's a Sutton's in Derendorf which would the one you'e thinking of - the same people own Sutton's and Fatty's in Altstadt and another bar in Hilden as well.

I'm living in Pempelfort myself too :-)

As for the Mittelstrasse Starbucks, yeah I'll be passing there after work - must have a look in, lol

Hello everyone.

OMG I've been here for almost 4 years and although I've already joined Toytown for 10 months, but only recently I realized that I'm a member here . Sadly I am leaving Germany in 4 or 5 months time due to graduation, but at least it's nice to know that there're lots of English speakers around VRR area. Maybe too late though but yeah, just to say hi here, though this thread is already out of date. Still 5 months is not a short period, and i have to get myself out of my hostel as i'm sick of always being at home. Please update me if there's interesting event, if you guys don't mind inviting a student along. I mentioned because I assumed most of you guys here are already in working class and/or having families here, right?

Doug

Hey guys,

I'm also from the UK, and I moved to Monchengladbach (nr Düsseldorf) a few weeks ago with my husband!

I very recently became an army wife, but I'm finding the whole military environment a bit hard going and would love to meet some non-military people!

I'm a massive fan of coffee and eis, as well as sightseeing and maybe learning some German! smile.gif

Hi, I'm Sara and my dog Chasca and I are from Denver, Colorado. After 4 years in Cologne, we couldn't stand it a day more, so now we are in Duesseldorf Bilk. Can't wait to meet people. We're easy going. We walk a lot in different parks, I like to dance, cook, music, and I love to go around to different castles and museums. So, if you have any events going on in Duesseldorf, just let me know, I'd like to participate.
Thanks.
francois123

Jeanie
And finally, after months of anticipation, I'm in Düsseldorf! biggrin.gif

So far, I've registered, opened a bank account, survived my Wohnungsübergabe (even though the person moving out never turned up, had left a pile of crap behind and apparently not thoroughly cleaned the apartment for a loooonnngg time, she did rip out the laminat from the kitchen though so the Vermieter had new laminate installed in the whole apartment the morning before I arrived), gotten all my stuff delivered (wasn't supposed to happen until tomorrow but they turned up about an hour after the Übergabe), cleaned a lot (but still lots and lots to do), felt much too hot most of the time (and not in a good way smile.gif ), survived an incredibly boring induction day in work and spent a couple of hours in Ikea making sure the couch I wanted to get is as nice as it looks in the catalogue and otherwise generally getting mesmerised by everything there as well as finding my local waschsalon and internet cafe. Not bad for the first three days I think. Am really looking forward to settling in so that I can start going out and having fun too. Think I'll most likely be spending most of the first month cleaning and unpacking!

Hi
I moved here with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago - its a great city - lots to see.
Having a tough time flat hunting though!
weather is reasonable - supposed to be hot next couple of weeks though

Are you moving here with family or are you coming to work in Germany?
taucher
Jeanie - if there was an harrassed looking bloke in front of you in the queue at Ikea finding out the hard way that they don't take credit cards then that was me. It's a long, lonely walk to the Geldautomat at the other end of the store I can tell you.

I've been here a week. I'm starting work on Monday and keen to enjoy that last few days of freedom. Anyone interested in meeting up for a drink on Friday or Saturday?
chasca23
I'll meet up on Saturday if you want! It will be my first day of "unpacking", so I don't drink a lot, but trading moving horror stories would be a great relaxtion method for me too! Let me know when and where, and we'll be there! Not before 8pm, please, I might not have unpacked my lipsticks yet, so that is important!

And if you think Ikea is fun, you'll love my "free delivery" service story from yesterday. I orded a washer and refrigerator from a store on the internet, which advertised, "free delivery and installation". Great. Yesterday, a man rang up my apt. and said, "Come down and get your things, they're here." ???

So, I went downstairs and the man had "delivered" my appliances to the outside of my bldg door, in other words, on the sidewalk, on a pallet. That was it. That's free delivery in Germany.

EEEEk. I freaked out. Only after BEGGING the man for ten minutes, did he actually bring the appliances up the elevator and into my kitchen. He explained to me THREE times what a HUGE favor he was doing for me by actually "delivering" my things into my apt. b/c of course, this is Germany, the insurance didn't cover him inside of the bldg, so if something had happened to him, between the front door and my apt. kitchen, then he would be in trouble for violating the insurance rules.

Prozac!!! Where's my Prozac???

So, situation solved, except for he says, as he leaves, "OH, by the way, the Pallet is now yours, we don't remove it after delivery." Great, I always wanted a pallet. And sure enough, the pallet was left sitting there blocking the entrance to the main door. The neighbors LOVE me, and I've only been there 10 hours! No idea what to do with the pallet, I stuck it in some obscure corner of the basement.

So, YES, we will all be ready to go out on Saturday night!!!

Remember, when and where, I'll be there.
Sara

By the way- Anyone have a car that would be willing to transport an oven from Neuss to Duesseldorf either on Saturday or Sunday??? A woman in Neuss offered me an oven for free if I could pick it up, but I can't because I have no driver's license or car in Germany.

I would be MORE than happy to pay you gas AND buy you lunch afterwards.

It's only 15 minutes away from my apt. in Bilk, a little bit outside of Neuss in Grovenbroich.

Has to be serious because I already stood the woman up once when my other driver backed out, "Kein Zeit". sad.gif She wasn't happy.

Would be grateful,
sara
